How to drain a pool
Need to drain your pool? Here it is, all the info you need in order to drain your pool with a submersible pump. It is not always a good idea to drain the pool with the pools equipment. So follow Mikes steps to properly accomplish a drain and fill. First things first, lets make sure that you have the proper equipment needed to drain a pool with a submersible pump.
Equipment needed
Having your set up with proper tools will make this service of draining your pool much easier. Make sure that you have:
Sump pump amzn.to/2X1GLc7
heavy duty backwash hose amzn.to/2tlEL0U
extension cord amzn.to/2UXaGAl
hose clamps amzn.to/2X0ZXqt
The set up
The sump pump will be dropped into the bottom of the pool. Make sure that you have the pump with the float on it so that it will shut off when the pool is empty. Attach the pump to the hose with the 2 inch hose clamps. Make sure this attachment is tight so that it does not blow off. Then, run the back wash hose all the way to where you want the discharged water to go. It is important that you dispose of the water correctly. Running it down the road may not be up to code in your area, so contact your city to see where you can drain the water. Use pvc to make extensions as well as an 90 degree elbow if you are draining into a clean out. Plug the pump in with your extension cord and start draining.
Important info
Although, draining a pool may sound easy, there are some important steps before you walk away. Make sure that the pools equipment is shut off at the breaker so that nothing can turn on. If the pools pump or lights turn on while the pool is empty, it may cause damage. Lastly, make sure that the water supply line to the pool is off. If the pool is equipped with an automatic water filler, this needs to be turned off.

Hey keep up the videos! Do you only use mostly tabs? I will use them in the winter time to raise cya to good level then stop and switch to liquid chlorine. Levels over 100 you have your hands full.

Kenneth Smith we use tabs year around. We also use liquid ch most the year to shock or boost ch levels. Very little tri Chlor

Do u have to take the plug out of the main drain ?
@JimPellegrin

I heard stories (on internet) of the water table lifting the pool (hydrostatic pressure) when it is empty. Is this hype or real? I have two drains in my 30,000 gallon inground pool....I know that one is going to the filter pump, is the other one for hydrostatic pressure?
@spiceymchaggiss
@spiceymchaggiss 3 года назад
Totally could if water table is high. I fix gas stations for a living and a wet set tank (basically setting a tank underground in water has to be anchored down) will pop/float out the ground with nothing in it if it wasn’t anchored or it failed somehow. Even with concrete and asphalt on top the tank will bust it all up and come out.
@trunk1255
@trunk1255 3 года назад
yes its real. if u have water thats under the pools foundation it will push the pool up. Imagine your pool is a boat. The more u drain it the less weight it has and if there's water underneath the pool it will push it up and then ur $#@!..

Type in sump pump in Amazon and scroll down until you see the red one. Or copy this link. amzn.to/3q5E7iG That black one is a good one though. It gets the water lower than the red one. $225 is a good average of where my techs charge for a drain and fill. Make sure you only drain a pool when needed. Thanks for the support. Good luck out there

I have a salt water pool and was planning on draining it myself since I neglected it over the winter and its turned green. What is different in filling a salt water pool vs chlorine?
@PoolRescuers
@PoolRescuers 5 лет назад
Tyler L only difference is you need to add salt once full. Make sure the salt cell is functioning. You’ll also need to make sure that you add the proper amount of salt. It’s is important not to add more than needed.
@braddavis8552
@braddavis8552 3 года назад
A salt water pool is a chlorine pool. All pools need chlorine, period.

I’m new to the pool business. I’ve been learning a lot about cya and higher CH. Work for a company with about 8 techs. Unfortunately they do not take cya as seriously as they should and talk about the dreaded algae in summer even with FC present. It’s very disheartening because I want to get my pools within a 50-60 cya but I’ve got pools that I’ve taken on since being hired with 100+ cya, lots of them. We don’t drain pools and they won’t even recommend it to customers. It makes no sense to me. We use tons of cal hypo and tabs. We have lots of calcium buildup at higher ch pools for obvious reasons and we just refer the customer to a blaster company. I take this chemistry stuff way more seriously than any of my guys and I’ve been in this industry for only 3 months. One technician got extremely upset with me for talking about why he has algae in the summer with a super high cya and just a 3-5 ppm FC. Like he thought I was saying he didn’t know what he was doing and I was just trying to have a conversation about cya. I wish there were more companies like yours I’d come work for you in a heartbeat
@PoolRescuers
@PoolRescuers 3 года назад
I often tell guys who want to join our industry that water chemistry is the most important. Learn water chemistry properly and you are better than 90% of the “pool pros” out there. Keep it up. You’re correct. Anyone who disagrees with your thought process is wrong. Just keep skimming
