How to drain your Window Air conditioner without drilling.

I recently purchased a new air conditioner that was slinging water from the condenser fan, onto the siding of my building, causing a mess.
I placed some gauze carefully in the back of the unit, and it acted as a wick, removing excess water on humid days.
The design of these units, is to collect water in the hot condenser coil, and have the fan sling water into the coil, improving subcooling.
When the weather is humid, the condensation is collecting faster than it can be evaporated by the hot condenser, so it gets kicked out by the slinger ring in the fan.
I only use this method, because my apartment complex was not thrilled with having to pressure clean the wall recently.
hope this helps you out in some way.

You life saver! I thought I had done something wrong. I spent like half an hour looking for some hidden condensation plug thinking maybe they put something in for shipping. Why on EARTH would there not be a built-in drain hole?!? I probably already would have drilled a hole if I didn't forget my drill bits at work but now I will try this first.

This tip worked great for my AC unit that was leaking inside the house! I used three strips of paper towels like another person suggested, gave it 15 minutes to take care of the accumulated water and it’s been running fine for over an hour without any further leaking. So glad I found this video, after considering having to do what another poster suggested - taking the entire housing off the unit. Ummm, no! Happy to fix it without needing hubby’s assistance. Thank you!

Genius. Thank you. My window unit started making a funny noise and then all the sudden I went hey wait a minute that kind of sounds like water and then I remembered that air conditioner is usually need a drain and either the drain plug was covered up or there wasn't one. Genius, I put a little bit of gauze in there at the fork just like you said and boy it's dripping quick. It immediately started to drain it

Okay, so I see a lot of the "window AC units are not supposed to drain" arguments. And while yes, they are designed to splash the water over the condenser coil to cool it, it only SLIGHTLY helps, and hurts a lot more in the long run. I collect and work on vintage air conditioners. Yes, the vintage ones have the same "slinger" on the fan as the new ones do. I have seen many units that are rusted out because the water constantly sitting in them, it rots the fins on the coils, it rots the pan, it rots the fan shroud and anything else metal inside. especially if no maintenance has been done on the unit and there is dirt or other debris as well. When restoring or servicing a unit, I always drill a drain hole in the pan from the inside out. This allows the water to drain out. Even on days where it is over 100 degrees outside, I have never had an issue with a unit overheating. It may SLIGHTLY reduce efficiency, but I have tested it and it is not much. I may test it and make a video on it in the future. Running a unit on a hot day with no water in the pan vs water in the pan does not make as much difference as they make it sound as far as pressure, power consumption, or the cooling output. If you run cool water directly from a hose over the coil, it does help reduce head pressure, and increase cooling, but a small amount of water in the pan which gets warm quite quickly does not make enough difference to justify the downsides of letting the water sit in it in my mind. Of course on a modern unit, something else will fail far before rust becomes an issue, so do what you want.

I've been having probs with my Window AC throwing water everywhere outside the past 2 months. It did get worse due to the increase in humidity here in Missouri. It was so bad by yesterday evening that I went online in search of any possible help and lo and behold I found your video. I cut 2 pcs from an old men's ribbed under shirt (A-shirt) last night then this morning I was able to insert both of them (1 on each end of the back of the AC). The fitting was so tight that I used some thin scissors to help push the pcs in place. Just shocking how very quickly the 2 "wicks" went to work draining the water and dropping it straight down - even though it was unusually windy today. And by this afternoon the window AC was running much quieter also! Valdor, I'm so very thankful that you posted the video tip to help with this issue. Also - Kudos for the others who posted materials they used as a wick!! The internet is a great tool for helping others. Thank you again many times over. And big hugs to you. 😀 Posted July 29, 2024

You are truly amazing sir! I have the exact 6,000 BTU unit, but mine does have a drain plug on the front end of the unit, but I must say it does not drain well from the plug line, I used double paper towels, and works like a charm! It has most definitely made the unit quieter, and it is also perfect as I live in a brick building apartment, and the landlord does not want the condensation dripping on the brick, I am so grateful to have came across this video! Even though my has the drain plug, I would prefer or all drains plugs should be on the bottom of the unit and not on the front.

I have the same exact problem. Just pruchased an 8000 BTU with a nice size drain hole that water won't drain from. Got it leveled like instructions said. I have tried tilting the side up where the water pools to force it to drain hole, still nothing. Don't want to tilt it back like the old school way, which actually helps the water to drain better, but that way rust the coils. This paper wicking was brilliant.

Thanks for this tip! I tried other materials first such as cotton T-shirt strips, terry cloth towel strips, paper towel strips. Nothing works as well as thick gauze pads. They just need changed monthly. Humid climates will grow serious amounts of mold and bacteria concoctions in the water in just a few weeks. Not only does it smell nasty, it's not healthy. This crud will mix with airborne debris such as bugs, pollen, dust, dirt, weeds and tree seeds, grass clippings, etc, which will also sling with the water and will clog the coils. So much for that small efficiency gain! You only need to use the gauze solution for a year, then the warranty runs out (on most consumer units). After the warranty is up, just remove the screws on the sides, and bend the metal a little out of your way to get a lay of the land in the pan. Then carefully drill some 1/4" holes in the deepest part of the pan, perhaps in the corners, as far away from the coils and pipes as you can see. If you cannot see where you are drilling from all sides, don't drill there! You do not want to poke into a pipe or any part of the coil. Not only is this dangerous, it will ruin your unit instantly.

Since then I have tried to buy units that came with drain holes but they appear to recently become extinct. In order to hit the highest energy star efficiency ratings, they intentionally keep a little bit of water in the pan that is flung onto the cooling fins. As this evaporates off the fins it provides additional "free" cooling without using any extra energy.

I’m in Michigan. I’m using a window ac in the wall panel. It’s tilted as far as possible to drain outside. My ac unit faces northeast. It’s in a shaded area side of the building wall. My problem is after just one use with a brand new ac. I get an Oder that smells like dead fish and the ac doesn’t work very well, following that first use. I’ve tried everything I could think of. I added drain holes as a neighbor told me the problems were due to lack of proper drainage. That didn’t help with the disgusting smell or proper operation. So then once a wk I’d use the hose and liquid cleaner to wash and rinse out the ac. That helped somewhat but didn’t cure the problem. I just installed another brand new ac. First use was fantastic. 2nd use I could already begin to smell that oder. 3rd use it oder was so strong that it was being blown into my apt. And it wasn’t cooling as well as the first use. Then suddenly I awoke from a nap and discovered the ac had shut off ! The icon for filter was lit up. After pressing the filter icon button the ac started running again. But definitely not cooling properly. Even tho the window ac is being used in a wall ac hole/ panel. I actually have the ac sticking way outside of the wall panel. Just like the ac would sit in a window frame. And it’s tilted outward as far as possible. I’ve not added a drainage hole to this brand new unit. I can see it isn’t dripping let alone draining and you can hear the fan motor blades hitting the water. I’m at a total loss as too what to do. I’m not even certain where the disgusting oder is rapidly developing inside the ac. Or what is the exact cause of it. I do get a lot of mosquitoes I see are dead inside the ac unit exterior areas. But why isn’t this a common problem for everyone else in Michigan ? Mosquitoes are everywhere in Michigan. If anyone can possibly offer me help with these two chronic ac problems. I’d be super grateful !! I’m 60 yrs old and have breathing problems. I no longer can tolerate the high humidity or heat we get during the summer. HELP.. PLEASE ! I peaked inside and saw water collecting in the bottom, even though I made sure it was tilted back. I looked in the manual, it said nothing about the drain hole. I just inserted a gauze patch, worked well! I couldn't use a fork though, the space between the casing and the condenser is too small for this particular AC, but I found a smaller tool to use. Why they don't have a drain hole in the proper place is beyond me.

LG units use a sling fan that scoops up water that puddles in the cowel of the outside radiator. The water is then thrown against the radiator fins to help cool the unit. The unit will flood though if the unit isn't tilted downward on the outside about 5 degrees. It even shows in the instructions to always tilt the unit. For more modern units that don't have a drain hole on the rear of the unit the method shown in the video should work also.

The problem is that the purpose of leaving the water in there is to help cool the coils. The water splashes around and gets on the warm coils and cools them down, increasing the efficiency of the machine. Think about it. The manufacturer is smart enough to have cut drain holes in the unit if it wanted to, but they didn't, so obviously it is designed the way it is for a purpose.

Annoying sounds aside, anybody who's own a window AC unit for more than a few years will realize that 1) yes, engineers designed the splashing water to make it 5% more efficient with evaporative cooling in dry climates. 2) Yes it voids the warranty to drill holes. 3) In dry, non-dusty, clean climates with no trees, weeds, or woods within 5 miles, this works great. But for the rest of the world in hot humid climates, there is just too much water produced. Eventually the dead bugs, weeds and tree pollen, tiny seeds, dust, dirt and airborne mold and bacteria all add up to lovely quantities of black mold and other nasty issues growing in this water. I've had the water back up into the air box, then build up black mold and spit it out the vents. Then it takes hours to remove the unit from the window, disassemble, and clean. And kill the mold. Only to have the cycle repeat. If you use the unit a lot (all day and/or all night), eventually this wet dirt, mold, and tree debris that is supposed to keep the coil cool actually clogs the coil with a mud that gets caked on and impossible to remove. After about 3-5 years, even with annual cleaning, the crud doesn't come out of the small fins. Then the efficiency has to be cut in half with all of the caked on concrete-like mud. So sure, go ahead and leave your shiny new AC unit completely stock. Have fun with that. Don't worry, in a few years, it will be so full of mold, dirt, mud and debris sitting in that gross water that you will gladly replace it with a new one. If the mold doesn't get you, don't worry. Some units use steel frames around the coils and as soon as those rust and swell, it causes refrigerant leaks. Either way, this excess water will destroy the unit. Thus padding the pockets of the manufacturers who hire these so-called engineers that design these aberrations. Remember, engineers today are taught to 1) save cost, 2) maximize profits, 3) design something physically pleasing but with planned obsolescence and non-serviceable parts, 4) design a product to last as long as the warranty (one year for most window units) plus a little more to keep people from getting too angry, 4) adhere to all safety requirements, 5) follow government efficiency standards, then finally, 6) make a product that is maintenance free and lasts as long as possible. Note how the final item (as consumers, we want the most), is actually the least concern. Yes I've worked in engineering. I know what goes on. Sometimes engineers also design great products but then the "manufacturing engineering" or "post engineering" departments redesigns it for cheapest mass production. Not all engineers are forced into this black hole. Just (mostly) ones who work for massive profit-driven companies. So don't think that all engineers for all products are designed perfectly or terribly. Lots of room for good designs to be cut down to mediocre in production. It is what it is.

The reason it does not have a drain hole is because the fan is supposed to sling water onto the condenser to help with Cooling. That may or may not apply to this model but it does drain aeventually if it gets over a certain level.

@kendramichelle322 Slinging water onto the condenser makes the evaporator Coils even colder. So the air condition is colder by slinging that water. That's what you should appreciate. If it is 85 Outside and the air coming off of the evaporator is 45 that is, a 40° difference, that means the outside condenser coil would be. 125. Cooling that that off is a good for the air conditioner.

Just so you know, most air conditioners are designed to have a tiny bit of water level when operating, which they sling onto the fins. This provides additional evaporative cooling increasing the efficiency of the heat exchanger. Its by design that it doesn't have a simple hole on the bottom.

Right, in most applications it evaporates before causing issue. This particular one slings water onto the siding of my building Making algae over time.

I can see the water in the back and the fan splashes everywhere, is that normal?
@BoopSnoot
@BoopSnoot 3 года назад
@@isaiaslivemusica8788 Check the user manual, generally the AC should be tilted so that a level bubble will be halfway over the center line, which allows the AC to drain to the appropriate level. If the AC is too flat the water level can be too high, or worse tilted toward the house you can have water intrusion.

Except in places like Texas where the amount of heat is matched, if not exceeded by the amount of humidity. Believe me, there needs to be drains in these things or you will have a water leak destroying your property...I am in the middle of going through this right now actually. It is tilted and has several drill holes and it still leaks in my house. Good stuff....replacing it with a U shaped Midea and hoping for good results...it too has no drain but I am not going to wait around to see if it will leak.

I'll have to try that. Mine has a drain plug but my fan has been hitting water so I don't think it's draining well. I was wondering what might be a good draining medium. I'll try the gauze.

I just got window units today, as my central unit died and waiting on parts. The water generation on these things is stupid crazy. I am in North Carolina so it is hot and muggy. Without the central air it has been 80 - 90 degrees in the house during the day. I have not used Window Air Conditioners in over 30 years and I am worried about leaking back in the house. I did this gauze trick this and it seems to work for now but the first strong wind will most likely blow it away as I could not really poke it down in there as there is what looks like a copper tube running the length and I did not want to risk puncturing it. I can hear the sound of water slinging around in the back also. I do not see any drips or leaks inside the house, but I can't see right behind the unit on sill on the 2nd floor from where I taped and insulated it. I think I am good based on using a mini level as the bubble is all the way towards the window. If I look in the front part of the Air Conditioner where the filter cover is, there are other radiator looking parts there too and I can see some condensation on those and water drops in that area on the styrofoam. It looks like it is tricking back towards outside, but that is a guess as it does not appear to be pooling but the gap under the front radiator parts is small and I cannot see past. This unit is a GE 8000 BTU. The other one is a Hisense 10000 btu. So my question is - Is visible water in the front part normal in small amounts? or should I be worried?

After how many years would a new A/C start to become water-logged?
@JoeZyzyx

These new window units irritate me with the vents also being on top. I silicon sealed a piece of plexiglass over those on mine, because Florida gets 5-6 feet of rain per year, which would be ending up inside the unit, especially during winter when AC is rarely turned on. There must be some bird brained concept behind top vents, but if so, I've not heard what it is other than obvious perhaps for more airflow. Mine works just fine with the top vents covered.

Window units dissipate water through the outdoor condenser coil. This is why they are installed level in the window. You should ask the manufacturer how the unit is supposed to drain

Our AC was brand new and started icing up randomly. I did this trick from the inside with a bowl. I didn't want to remove the AC to drill holes. And the design of the AC is horrible qhere water sits in the front but thr back drains fine. So as soon as the water level reaches.the coils it started icing up the entire thing. Of course this happe Ed on a heat wave. So I tried this and it worked like a charm.
