This video shows the basics of how to make a plate using a slab of clay over a drape mold. In this video, I use a paper plate (two stacked actually for greater stiffness) and show two ways to place a slab on it to get the form. In one, I use a precut circular template a bit bigger than the plate, cut the circular slab out of the rolled and ribbed clay, and place it on the plastic bag covered paper plates. The second method shows how to place the uncut ribbed slab over the covered plates, then cut the edge to the correct size of the outside of the plate. Either method is fine, it just depends upon your personal preference. For the tools I used in the video, check out the link below to a Googledoc with item descriptions and Amazon links!
I made this video for my Ceramics I students at Mason High School. This video is just the first in the series of videos showing this exercise. The big learning takeaways of this exercise are kids will learn how to roll an even slab and compress it with a rib, how to drape mold, and cut it to the appropriate size. In the next video in this series, they will learn how to carve a design and clean the leatherhard plate and carving. The day 2 video on cleaning and carving is here: • Cleaning and Carving t... The third video shows how to glaze the plate- and for that I introduce underglazes for glazed the carved lines and a bulb syringe for application of our stoneware glazes. Check out my other videos on finishing this exercise! Here is a playlist for the slab plates! • Creating Slab Drape Mo...

I am a public high school ceramics teacher at William Mason High School in Mason, Ohio. (Mason is currently the largest high school in Ohio!) As a potter, I have been working in clay for over 30 years, and I have been teaching for over 28 years, the past 20 have been specifically teaching high school ceramics. I love what I do! I have my own studio in my home basement, where I work on my personal pottery for my Etsy site; www.etsy.com/shop/KaransPotsA...
I started my RU-vid channel a few years ago, to make videos to help my students if they are absent and miss a demo, or if they would like to explore more advanced techniques independently. I have been amazed to reach such a wider audience than my own students!
Please subscribe to my channel if you would like to receive channel updates, or would like to learn more about clay and studio processes!
