I consider myself a good portrait artist but always struggle mapping out the face. The shading/detail not a problem, how you guys can do this freehand is unbelievable. I have to grid out the face and measure the distances of the eyes, mouth ears etc so painstakingly slow. And even then doesn't always work
@ArtofWeiHo
@ArtofWeiHo 10 лет назад
The head is such a difficult thing to draw, and shading it is extremely difficult, at least for me. If you're doing portraits, have you consider just tracing it? I did some portraits before and I find that people don't really care how you did it. They just want to see your techniques and your expression on the drawing.
@oldboy562
@oldboy562 10 лет назад
WeiWorks I brought some tracing paper yesterday, simply traced the outline and features then taped it to the drawing paper. Then roughly drawing the outline whilst checking every now and again to see if it lines up. Pretty affective and has saved me a couple of hrs! Once the features are complete I simply start the detail, and just use the tracing paper as a reference guide. Thanks again Wei!

You’re TALENT. I have found myself getting better but go through so many botched drawings to get to one I’m proud of. Shading scares me because I usually mess it up at that point. I just can’t seem to find a rhythm to the lines that doesn’t make it seem like a messy mash up. Drawing on white paper is also harder I find for rendering than toned paper. Keep up the great work 👏🏼

@ArtofWeiHo
@ArtofWeiHo 10 лет назад
Makinzie Hilscher That's great. You can always post it on my facebook page "Art of Wei." As for supplies, it's not expensive. All you need is a 2b and a 4b, that should cost you about $2 total=). You can always just use a regular HB pencil from. It just won't be as dark. But don't let a little thing like that deter you from drawing.

Awesome! How do you approach of shading with imaginary characters? I presume u observe a lot of other pictures and photos? I have problems with shading characters i draw coz i dont have feedback and cant imagine light source and complexity of face if i am not looking at subject.....
@ArtofWeiHo
@ArtofWeiHo 9 лет назад
Zox Wolf Thanks Zox. Well, drawing from imagination is very tough. The best thing to do is to have some kind of reference. It could be as simple as getting a quick shot of yourself in your desired pose with some simple lighting. My point is that any kind of reference is better than no reference. When you draw enough from reference, you'll get much better at drawing without reference. That's the way it goes. Don't think that professionals don't use reference. They ALL do. It's a matter of how extensive they use it.
@zoxwolf2133
@zoxwolf2133 9 лет назад
Art of Wei I draw my characters i attend to model in maya. I am constructing these on some proportion laws (especially according to Andrew Loomis and some to Burne Hogarth). I am looking lot of photos, but photo in comparison have more information without accentuated light and shadow, so i need to exaggerate with shading in order to have better definition of form while modeling face. Now thats though for me. You could do a tut of shading front and side drawing head in realistic manner :) Lot of things i saw are not so realistically shaded and its easy to over do it. I wish i could show you my newest male char somehow and hear critique from you. It will be finished soon. Cheers

Zox Wolf Did you check out the reference video I did for lighting the head? Check that out and see if that is useful for you.
@neugs1807
@neugs1807 4 года назад
Try imagining the shape of what you're drawing. Every curve and the depth, try making a 3D image of it in your head (sounds more complex in words than in practice). Then imagine where the light is coming from, drawing an arrow on the paper helps. Then remember that the more perpendicular something is to that arrow, the lighter it will be. Whatever the arrow hits will be very light and everything it misses will be darker and darker depending on just how close it is to the light. Weird explanation my bad.

From my experience the material of paper kinda affects shading. Smooth paper makes coal harder to stick and hence harder to make shade. Of course that's just for me, since I'm new to this. Shading is very, very difficult. Thank you for the video. I'm a fan now.

Thank you Victor for watching. It's fun for me too and I learn something new every time I do a video. Putting it in video and words really helps me to analyze what I'm actually doing, instead of instincts=).

Congratulations on your work. There is something you can take after finishing your drawing to keep it? you see when you close your book, the pen is passed to the front page and eventually this becomes clearer if not erasing, maybe a kind of spray? or special varnish for this kind of art? Thank you in advance for your answer. fabby

Must be the bad translation. But if I understand you correctly, you're asking about how I keep my drawings? I generally just pile these up since they're just quick sketches.

Could you make a tutorial on how to shade a picture with only one kind of pencil? I'm an amateur and I find it so complex to draw pictures using so many kinds of pencil.
@ArtofWeiHo

quang nguyen You can shade with the same pencil, it just won't have as wide of range of values, but the procsse is still the same. Just do the same thing but use one pencil. It's all good.

Actually I personally advise you to use only one kind of pencil as a beginner. At best 2. A normal say 2b or hb and one darker like 6-8b. For really dark areas. If you feel like you have problems putting down the basic shapes with hb pencil, that is hard to erase, try using 3. A 2-4h a hb for general shading and a dark one. . . that is my experience. As a side note, I don't even think its really worth to go into 6-7 pencil drawing, or put down a super wide range of values on a pencil drawing. Unless you are specifically try to practice values. You might as well put effort into painting digital works then.

Kilyén Balázs I thought a painting wouldn't look smooth if I use only one pencil, but you made it clear for me. Thank you.

The one thing I struggle with us achieving a likeness. Can you please do a video showing how to get a drawing to look like the person in the photograph?
