I'll admit I still struggle with drawing consistent faces. It's hard, so if you struggle don't feel bad. The methods used in this video have really helped me get more consistent character faces across my books.
Shape and size make huge differences. Singularity is a great way to help us when we can't draw it the same.
Good luck out there!

I do just want to say that over the past couple of months I have followed many different artists who have informational videos, and they have all helped me but you’re the only one that has a wider spectrum of videos to help improve art, making a comic, webtoons, writing, et cetera. Because of that I think I am retaining information so much better because you teach each topic in a consistent manner and I’m retaining things easier. So thank you so much for the effort and time you’re putting in these videos, it has helped me improved so much in such a small amount of time.

Usually what I do is draw my character a lot, once I find a design or a specific drawing I really like I’ll study how to replicate the qualities I like about it. I find that doing some quick sketches of the character helps me push their unique features a little more. I haven’t done real turn around yet, so I’ll give it a go!
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 4 года назад
I think the hardest thing for me when I have a new character, since my art is a little cartoony, is trying to figure out what the face is actually doing in 3d space, like is the jaw jutting forward or falling back. 3d spatial depth is a huge weakness of mine. The turnarounds help me think through it.
@ghenesapaulma1963
@ghenesapaulma1963 4 года назад
This honestly feels reassuring ☺️ Even tho I've noticed for a long time some artists don't make their characters look consistent all the time, there is still that little pressure of wanting to make them look the same in my drawing. The landmark thing is pretty helpful, thank u so much for this vid! Can I also ask if u could make a vid of how to age characters? Like what an infant's facial structure would usually be like and their difference from teens, adults, and elderlies?
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 4 года назад
Yeah, I may be able to do that. Do you mean drawing characters of different ages or do you mean drawing the same character but growing from a baby to an old person throughout the story?

I worry a little about doing more "artsy" videos, because art is so personal and I don't want artists to think that this is the only way to do it. It's important to see how a bunch of different artists hand the same problem, and then pick your favorites and blend them. So yeah, totally get what you're saying ;-)

This is really helpful. My strong area is drawing very tentative one-offs with very distinct expressions , but it's tough to turn that into anything I could make into a repeated thing. Interestingly, and I apologize if this was said before (I hate endposting, but I also am too tired to read 160 comments), the tip for the singularity heads is almost exactly how my faceblind friends seem to navigate the world. They can't really discern facial geometry and proportions and instead look at hair, ornamentation, accessories (and clothes). So while I'm agonizing over subtle details, if some of the people looking at my picture are also faceblind, it may not be nearly as important as ensuring that I don't give three ladies the same Edwardian "cottage loaf" hairstyle. :) You've gained a subscriber! Thanks for your output!

Walter Ostlie the art school I went to made me very depressed. I came there to learn and I guess I learned to bs? I asked feedback on anatomy and the answer was ‘idk maybe use a different color’... I found out that they didn’t care about illustration and they saw it as the least important study at the school, and in general after 2 years I learned way less than the time in my holidays I spent with RU-vid. The talking to and meeting other artists was nice, but that’s all I think was good about my experience (with a few exceptions, from every bad experience there is still something to learn!) So anyways corona came and my classes got cancelled for a while, and it was going so well at home I didn’t want to go back anymore. So I’m gonna try to set something up on my own now ^w^ I hope to publish my WEBTOON coming September! Sorry if that was a bit long haha

@walterostlie
@walterostlie 4 года назад
When I want to think about my story, I go someplace quiet, no distractions. I put on healing mantra videos on youtube, put my headphones on, and just sit quietly with a notebook. I'll do that for 30 to 60 minutes. Just keeping myself company. Distractions are the enemy of creativity. If you need a break, take a walk, do some jumping jacks or stretches, yoga is great for thinking.
@walterostlie

How to manage the story for a specific number of panels? when I write an episode one seems fine for panels the other episode feels like it will have more panels than the other episodes, I want to make 35-40 panels and some episode might take more because of the story how to manage the episodes and also adding a surprise/cliff hanger at ends
@walterostlie
@walterostlie 4 года назад
Good question! I struggle with this also. Sometimes, there's nothing you can do. Sometimes I have to do 60 panels, other times I have problems writing even 30 panels. I think with too many panels, you have to think of ways to clear out panels that may not be needed, or ways to combine actions. Or maybe just split it into 2 episodes. When you don't have enough panels, spend more time with pacing and cool moments, use it for character interaction and growth.

those characters have been drawn by so many people in so many different styles, that would be tough. They have their house styles which is prolly as close as you'll get. It's weird, but I think facial proportion is a very individual artistic trait. Like I tend to draw my faces longer than normal, so if I was forced to draw superman to house-spec, it wouldn't look like my art anymore.

Are you able to live off of RU-vid being ur job?

me? No, not even close. It's not my job though. I just do it to help people make comics. My guess is you need 1 million views a month. I have 83,000 views a month, which makes me $100 a month. would need like $1,000 to $1,500 to be a living. A long way to go to make a living ;-)

It seems... this advice doesn't account for depth... Very basic advice. Very hit and miss. Usually miss.
