1. use a loose, 4-finger grip 2. use the least # of muscles as possible (no fingers, use the arm to draw the line) 3. maintain a constant and fairly fast-paced speed 4. before drawing the line, draw a practice line between 2 pre-set start and end points 5. find comfortable positioning to make use of the length of the arm *for horizon lines: let hand run along horizontal edge of page, adjust length of grip to allow for this. Never move the fingers, always the arm. Following these steps will produce a straight line.

I've followed many online guides on drawing lines, but none mentioned pressure. I've been stuck looking at wobbly lines that would never great near straight. Giving up on drawing multiple times, losing hope over and over. Than with your help I tried less pressure and it made a huge difference. Also to not expect truly perfectly straight lines is a good thing to keep in mind.

Other than not really being able to see the lines you were drawing it was a very constructive lesson Murray thanks so much. Now Im going ot see if you have one on perspective as that is something I can never get my head around. It all makes sense when I watch someone explain it but when I go to put it to use I cant remember the rules arrgghhh....

Thank you so much, this was really helpful. Speed was my problem. I mostly draw from a sitting position because of disability, so drawing from my shoulder isn't as smooth. I move the paper a lot to get my curves and angles. Do you have any suggestions?
@onlineartlessons
@onlineartlessons 5 лет назад
Hi Ulysses, If your disability is restricting your shoulder movement try supporting your elbow in some way to help stabilise it (such as pressing your elbow against the desk with an upright drawing board). Rotating and/or moving the paper to allow the best line is perfectly fine, in fact I would recommend that to everyone. You might be best to use a drawing board slightly larger than the paper, clip the paper to it so it doesn't move around, and rotate/move the whole board when you need to. If you use this in conjunction with an upright table easel you may find that it makes it easier. Hope that helps, Happy Drawing!

Nice, for sketching. But a final drawing needs dedicated straight lines between 2 dedicated points. And often in black.

I have noticed that you draw lines AWAY from your body. Is this also to do with utilising your arm when drawing?
@onlineartlessons
@onlineartlessons 3 года назад
Good observation, yes that is my preference. I find that is it an easier move to make with less resistance. I find myself pressing slightly harder when I bring my arm towards me.

Question. Do these terms apply if I'm gay?
@tommypalm8960
@tommypalm8960 4 года назад
There are no muscles in your fingers. They’re controlled by muscles and tendons from the forearm. As such, if you want to draw straight lines, you need to try as hard as you can not to move your fingers. The same goes for your wrist. It should be in line with your forearm without any kink in it. This essentially makes one straight line from your elbow to your fingers. If you’re sitting and drawing, the fleshy part of the forearm should be resting on the table and your elbow should act like a hinge. You should be able to draw perfectly straight lines like this. If you’re standing, the power actually comes from your shoulder. Check out Spencerian Penmanship if you’d like further details.
