lifedrawing.academy/ - When making fast portrait sketches, an artist has to use the knowledge of proportions and anatomy, especially when drawing from imagination because there is no model to check proportions on. Needless to say, it is only possible when you know those proportions and rules of drawing facial features. In this video, you will discover how to make five portraits a day. If you would like to learn anatomy for artists the fast and easy way, take the Anatomy Master Class - anatomymasterclass.com/
In this drawing tutorial, I would like to demonstrate that this is not a matter of time, quality, or drawing skills you have. It is about making a commitment of sketching on a daily basis. As long as you make multiple sketches every single day, your portrait drawing skills will improve with time. Of course, just sketching is not enough, you need to learn how to draw portraits the right way. This is what we can help you with - giving the necessary knowledge of how to draw portraits. This topic is fully explained in the Life Drawing Academy course - lifedrawing.academy
If you learn the best under personal guidance of professional art teachers, the Life Drawing Academy Correspondence Course is the best option to learn how to draw portraits and figures from life, memory and imagination - lifedrawing.academy/correspon...

Makes me feel better about drawing with a dip pen, and I used it because of the same reason: to teach me how to be confident in lines and to force me to use single clean strokes. On my first attempt my sketch looked very wonky, and then on the next day I drew the same sketch and I greatly improved on the space between the eyes, nose, and lips and the head proportion. My line confidence still needs more practice, but 30% of it shows cleaner lines than my previous sketch.

I often see artists on my feed talk about how making art their main career made them lose interest in their art. It makes me slightly worried for my future since art is what I’ve wanted to do for many years. I can see myself improving but the reality that I will need to decide how I want my life to go in two years really is daunting. This video is very comforting to me and reassured me about the decisions I want to make for myself, thank you! Also your voice is so calming.

Also, don't forget that just because you are choosing arts as a carrier, it does not mean that you can't learn other things. Burnout is real and no matter how much you love what you do, you'll still get tired if you only do that thing. I myself am a professional musician, but I also decided to learn how to draw and how to write light novels.

Don't make it your career. Make it a passion that you still keep as a hobby. If you can monetize it or otherwise put a fulfilling/incentivizing purpose to it, go with that.
@lavishlyvice

honestly i think you should give things a try and not let other people’s experience, whether good or bad, hinder you too much. try and create a backup plan if things don’t work out so you won’t lose your footing entirely, this goes for no matter what you want to do as things can always go wrong. some things are better kept as a hobby while others are at their full potential as a job. a lot of factors play into it, your motivation, the place you work at, who you work for, etc etc, and these factors are different for everyone.
@cluek9780

@@user-fe8gx3ie5v ^^This. Art can become secondary to work, and *everything you do for $$ becomes “work.” and that can kill passion. IMHO (lifelong pro), save some passion for your *own work, and exercise it daily! It is perishable! Segment your own work from “work”!

As a high school artist, during quarantine I started using microns for the first time and began to consider the fact that I can't fix my mistakes, so I would draw with them all the time to get myself into a different mindset. I recommend this to artists who aren't confident in their art, because psychologically it does help you prevent mistakes because you know you can't change a mistake but have to work around it. It also makes you feel more confident because when I used graphite I was self conscious of if my art looked good enough, but with this I became more confident and like my art more than before and not just because of the increase of skill. I tend to be an insecure person but this definitely made me confident about my art style and might have even made me more confident with myself too.

Thanks for some good ideas. I would disagree that you can’t be good at portraiture without learning the proportions of the head and features. Although I did learn them early on I also forgot almost everything and when I try to draw from a photo and I try to use the standard proportions I find it almost always makes my sketches worse. I do better by just looking very carefully at the subject and constantly checking the the photo or model many times. Perhaps drawing from imagination might be easier using the standard proportional guidelines for some. Still the idea of simple drawings and not worrying about getting it right each time is incredibly important. I can see improvement in my portrait sketches within days of more practice.

I see art like love. Thinking someone is beautiful only, isn’t love. But getting to understand them, and knowing them for what their actual beauty is, is love. Lots of artist only see art as something that looks good. That like somebody only linking another for their good looks. But it’s until you get to understand art, or to understand that person, that you get to see the truth in them, and you can finally focus on what matters, and what doesn’t. And once you get to them, or get to know art, you can finally focus on what truly matters. Making them, or you art as happy or good as it can be.

It tends to create this weird replica and not exact picture of my topic and I really like the way they come out, but I have been HORRIBLE with drawing without a reference. I never appreciate how complex a face is until i have to draw one without a reference. I can do sculls without reference fairly well, and eyes and lips and noses, but never all together. For realistic art, i use projector for tracing. Your way of drawing artwork is what i always wanted to learn. I am good at shading so i can bring traced portrait to life and also it looks realistic. Thank you, i learnt many things from your video.

I’d like to examine your crosshatched sketches, as planning these strokes is difficult tho elegant. (45 year pro) I describe it as “carving marks.” Although few take it that far, drawing *daily changes your focus; pay attention! [I SWEAR that after so long, I’m no longer looking *only at contours, but the depth of my focus varies somewhat by material hardness: 1-4 inches beneath a figure’s skin, 2-3” beneath a stone wall, 1-2” beneath a wooden table, etc., essentially a Gesture]. It becomes a meditation🧘‍♂️ (I only realized where my focus had changed when a colleague asked me to describe it). I hope You can become aware of it sooner!

It would be lovely to see all those sketches with ample time to notice the details! If it's not a bother, I'd love to see another video on the sketchbook flip through.
