Sure, I've got motorcycles, fast cars, Persol 714s, the jackets & the denim. Not one bit of any of that makes me as cool as Steve McQueen. You can even ask my wife & she'll tell you the same damn thing, LOL!
You are either born with it or not, you cannot purchase it. That’s why so many men and women are after money, they think they can just purchase style, happiness, etc... You can’t. Guys like Steve are one in a million, or maybe even one in ten million. You could put a pair of jeans and t-shirt on him and people would copy him. Fashion industry is striving because they know how important the looks are to people and they give them false promise they can look better if they buy expensive clothes. But you simply can’t. Hence the reason why the clothes are expensive, so that they can at least say I am wearing this and that, brands, so there is at least some recognition there. I am wearing Kiton suit that why I have style. Sad, but true. The jacket Steve wore in Bullitt is Sears, it wasn’t Brioni or Kiton, because that was enough for him, and people 50+ years later are still trying to copy that style.
Steve McQueen had a "mod" look. This is evident in the Harrington jacket and especially the minimalist "less is more" aesthetic he rocked. The look is "living clean under difficult circumstances". It is fresh and simple, yet sophisticated.
I had no idea Steve wore Supega shoes until this video. I absolutely love these shoes they are great for hot climates as they are made of canvas, so are quite cool, are very long lasting and not expensive at all. I currently have 6 pairs all different colors. What's nice about them is when they get dirty just throw them in the wash and dry them in the sun and you're good.
Awesome review. Btw, two small things you might have missed: Steve McQueen @ 0:27 is not wearing Persol. James Dean @ 1:01 is clearly not wearing a harrigton coat with the distinctive collar. Love to know the actual brand of jeans worn by McQueen too, if anyone knows!
You didn't mention the Chukka Boots he wore in Bullitt and the Thomas Crowne Affair. I have several pair myself. They are excellent casual wear and they are more comfortable than sneakers. Suede uppers and cheese bottoms rubber. Great shoes. There's a good camera shot of them in Bullitt in the shootout scene at the airport at the end of the film when he puts his foot on the gun and slides it away from the bad guy. Rust colored. The ones I have are from 2 companies: Rockers and Original Britishers.
I could not find myself wearing that jacket; I would buy it, or something more authentic to simply have as a reminder of the King of Cool. That said, what made him the King of Cool was how he was able to be simplistic without looking like anyone else; there was no hipster sensibility back then, it was Mod. He was non of those things but pulled off his personal preferences without compromise and whilst being a badass. Also, he showed that he could rock a Saville Row tailored three-piece in the original Thomas Crown Affair. I suppose you left yourself a bit of wiggle room with the "most of the time", but I had to throw a few things out there for you as a rebuttal; it is just what I do, and no harm or malice toward you. And not to be pedantic, my friend, but the movie was Bullitt, the Bullitt Mustang of this title's fame is insanely collectable. In fact, they found his, the original Bullit Mustang, in Mexico several years ago. I would love one, along with the the Jag that he drove both on and off the set. If investments pan out, maybe in two years time...
