How To Dress Up Your Engine!

It's somewhat by accident that I 'dressed up' my engine. I was really just trying to fit my AC compressor and solve the vent problem with my valve covers. However I found a kit, and a set of valve covers that worked perfectly for my application.
In this video I go over the installation of that kit as well as the valve covers.

Just as I moved to Florida 3 years ago my AC died... I got a job working outside, so I get all nice and sweaty then get in a 110+ degree car and head home... not fun. I've been fixing my own cars with Eric's videos for 7 or so years now, watched all of the AC videos and properly replaced the compressor, vacuumed the system and refilled it, did the dryer receiver and the expansion valve as well... finally have AC. Point is YES, when it's very hot you're dying for some AC. Honestly on long trips of it being over 100 you can start to feel faint, it's not a good thing.

I just started my channel and feel the same way as you about the "hand calibrating torque settings" and said to people don't break my shoes. Then I tried to torque something that wasent a die or need setup and I snapped 2 heat stressed bolts. Then got lucky with the extraction but said to people see what happens in this kind of situation. LOL. Thanks for the inspiration to make my own channel and your video's are great and love them. Keep up the great work.

I have used CVF Racing parts in the past. Their parts are well made with a great finish and fit. Due to continued failures, I finally bit the bullet and spent $2300 on a Vintage Air FrontRunner system. The Vintage Air system came with all the components needed to ensure the proper fit and operation of the accessory drive. Aluminum water pump, 170 amp alternator, power steering pump, belt tensioner, all the ARP fasteners needed, and a signal Serpentine belt. The system has been installed for three months now with about 5K miles on it including a desert run with 100+ temperatures. Before I installed the FrontRunner system I never got more than a thousand miles without a failure. The only problem remaining is all the rusty junk I need to replace under the hood. The upfront price on the Vintage Air system made me say bad words but with it said and done it is the better value.
@ericthecarguy
@ericthecarguy 7 лет назад
Yea, I thought about that. It's funny that in the end I will have probably spent $2K on my system and it will look like I never did anything when I'm done.
@oldchevymax1751
@oldchevymax1751 7 лет назад
The Vintage Air FrontRunner system is a beautiful piece of art but the best part of the system is I bolted on a 100K miles of reliability. The only complaint I have is the support from Vintage Air was not worth the time I put into. Unlike CVF Racing that is always helpful. I really love the Fairmont Videos and will watch all the videos you can produce. Remember family comes first then the Fairmont, import repair videos, ETCG1 and last and most likely least sleep. Keep up the great work and thanks for being on RU-vid.

That engine looks great the way you built it, and hope everything works out fine once it is in the car. It must be so rewarding to know that you built that engine yourself, and it is a workhorse like no other. It is nice that you have power steering and A/C on the vehicle also since the A/C will definitely be needed in the Summer heat.

Two things Eric, one, I never use my a/c. My roof comes off #ttop, and I'm ALL about that lifestyle(sunburn and all). Two, maybe you did look into it but vintage air makes kits for almost EVERYTHING. Jay Leno stands behind there products and jay is much smarter than I. Both those being said I'm sure there is good reasoning you have made the choices you have and although a die hard bowtie fanboy I really hope you enjoy this project on the streer

On a boosted engine I'm afraid you are going to need a oil catch can. Boost and valve cover breathers don't work well together. The catch can may be a pain to find room to mount. But it's a real good idea so you don't oil down your engine bay. And I can see why you were a little upset about the missing water pump pulley hardware. I believe they don't supply them with it because the needed bolt length can vary greatly depending on a fan set up used. Not everyone runs an electric fan. And on the mechanical fans the needed bolts will depends on the spacer length or fan clutch being used. The engine is looking good!

Those rubber and steel gaskets are the only way to fly on a 302. The 130 amp is OE for a 90s Taurus, also an awesome part. Stock 80s alternators have terrible low rpm output.
@MasterChief-sl9ro
@MasterChief-sl9ro 6 лет назад
Large Body 2 holes all always 130 amp.. Ford uses them in many a truck and vans.. I would add. These things get hot above 50% loads. Which is why ford uses a 175 amp fuse and #4 stranded wire from alternator too battery....

@ericthecarguy
@ericthecarguy 7 лет назад
PCV systems didn't show up until the 1950's. Before them, they used to vent the engines out of a 'draft tube' on the back of the engine. The PCV actually came about because the US army wanted to drive their Jeeps underwater.

With dressing the external threads after trimming off part of the original length, I was taught to always use a die. That is the best way. A very good mechanic/technician should have a die set adjusted to a looser cut to minimize re-cutting any of the good, original threads. The trick with the nut is just that: a trick (more like a shortcut). Only use that method in a pinch. For internal threads, there are specific thread-chasing taps that will minimize re-cutting the good part of a threaded hole. A common application is the spark plug hole; use white grease in the tap's flutes to trap the chips. Then, clean out the re-cut spark plug hole carefully and thoroughly with dental picks (yeah, really!).

I installed a CVF kit on my Pontiac and ran into pulley alignment issues too. I have an aftermarket balancer and that threw off the pulley alignments. The water pump shims CVF sent weren't thick enough so I ended up making my own. I also had to make new spacers for the brackets. Thankfully I have a machine shop and was able to get everything dialed into a gnats ass. I redid the belt tensioner to get rid of the two piece one CVF sent and fabed a different power steering to head bracket. All those spacers .. washers and slotted brackets was just to sloppy for my taste and looked kind of clunky. This isn't a criticism of CVF because they have to try and cover as many permutations as they can in one kit. Mine was off just enough to be an issue.

Super clean engine - 95% all new parts have that effect (also on your hip pocket... ouch). Cannot go wrong with the Saginaw pump, they were used in so many different OEM applications. A catch can would be nice that is then vented back into the turbo inlet. Crankcase venting smell (gas+oil) into the atmosphere gets old.

Good point, but I don't plan to drive the car hard all the time. I'm hoping I don't have to go to a catch can. If I have to fit one more thing to this car I'm going to my room to hide under the bed.

Lol, I can imagine. See how you go with the breather filters but personally I really dislike the fuming hot oil smell you get from them, even when driving normally. You pull up a stop light, then take off and get a wafting crankcase oil/gas smell that your wife/girlfriend will be sure to dislike!

I don't think my wife will be spending too much time in this car.

Eric, I think I need an oil catch can on my EuroR H22(11.5:1 comp) in my 93 Accord. I was told it would cut back on the white smoke that comes out of the exhaust at high RPMs. Any truth to this?

How do you figure out what way to run the belt around all the pullies? How do you figure out the correct length of belt? How do you figure out the correct tension of the belt across everything?

In order. Ribbed side goes to ribbed pulley. Smooth pulley goes to smooth side of the belt. The belt came with the kit and was sized for it. After a while you develop a feel for belt tension. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ZSTZdTAB_As.html

If this is a street vehicle, will valve cover breathers to open air not violate vehicle (emissions) annual inspection?

How about installing an electric p/s pump (like the ones on MR-2) and free up some space and hp too; nice looking engine 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Because the bracketing I just installed solves all my problems, including mounting the PS pump. I have plenty of other problems to solve before the car is done.
