FYI!!! Never lower that dumpster to where that cable is seen through the back window! That my friend is an absolutely no! The cable could snap and come through the back window and take your head off!! Always leave dumpster up in air till full inside the locks for rails! Been doing rolloff for over 20years and training newbie’s!!!! My opinion!!!!

Keeping center of gravity in mind. How high are you leaving your rails. With your rails well maintained. Pulling a box along the rails, parallel to the ground opposed to perpendicular puts less strain on the cable. With this in mind. At which rail position is your cable more likely to break. This comes from someone who spent his career picking up steel stamping plant recycling scrap. 20+ ton tare loads ( in 20 and 40 yrd boxes) were a regular weight.

seen through the back window? well youre not obviously training anyone and you sure as shit dont have the experience you say you do. NEVER....look through the back window when loading or unloading cans full or empty good waht to have youre head taken off.

At least he is showing everyone his mistakes. Never lower your hoist all the way before dumpster makes it to end of rails. If you’re pointing downward you are gonna be in trouble someday when it slides forward and your cable comes off. Also most roll off trucks have locking pins. If it’s down the your locking pins are engaged and dumpster will not seat properly

Recently started roll-off driver, I return to your videos often to get the basics drilled in my head. Almost everyone has their own way of doing things , which can be confusing to newbie. All was going good till I had a can slide off rails and get stuck in between rails ,because I didn’t slow down and follow basics , most stressed,scared I have been in my 58yrs, no one was hurt,no damage to truck or property but I will never let that happen to me again because I rushed .Hope that never happens to any driver ,new or old .I was in tight area without room to get to a safe area and free the box , needless to say I was very lucky . Thank you for you’re teaching videos, there are not many as thorough as yours

Glad I could help you. I want you every person the opportunity to learn a new job and be successful. There are a lot of little tricks you learn over years of having problems. That was my biggest issue training new guys, was getting the difficult cans so we could solve the problem together. Some weeks training I would have 3-10 problem cans and other weeks training I would have none. In my experience the ability of the driver to learn roll off, depended mostly on how the drivers willingness to learn and accept criticism from a younger person like myself. Thankfully the people who “know it all” aren’t watching How To videos in their off time!

@@code3responsevideos872 Since you're a trainer, you should do what we did in the Air Force. Have operating instructions from approaching, setup. Keep refining it, including the situations with the problem cans(what were the problems & how to resolve it). This way, even Gomer Pyle or Forest Gump could do the job, if they follow the step from 1 to x.
@code3responsevideos872
@code3responsevideos872 Месяц назад
@@DecrepitBiden I agree, I worked this job from age 20-30. In the early to mid years I was the trainer at this company. Although this was all we one company the owner never allowed me to implement the training program I wanted. I heard from other trainers that big companies used classroom and closed courses. I kept telling the owner, “ if I got hired at company X for roll off, they wouldn’t even consider me without 2 years experience. Additionally, they would pay for 2 weeks of classroom/closed course driving, then 2 more weeks with a trainer locally.” But I never got him to come around. It was hard but I quit that job 2 years ago for a job hauling hazmat in a daycab. I’ve heard through the grapevine his insurance costs have went 10X due to the bad drivers, coupled with lack of training. It’s negligent to hired some with a checkered driving record and not give them proper training. This video was my attempt for training material to watch this before they started training with me. I did it without the owners knowledge. I had one new guy who started at our company who (having zero roll off experience) searched and found this video here. He knew immediately when seeing the truck in person that he had been watching my videos. I believe that driver just had his 5thin year with the company. I know this is a long winded explanation, but I wish I could’ve had the authority to organize this process. All I can say is I am extremely blessed to have my new job.

I just started roll off? I'd say roll is the most basic. But then things get messy and then you on your own and now have to troubleshoot. What I learned is always keep ratchet straps, ropes, bungees, and importantly sledgehammers lol
@Dave-0523
@Dave-0523 Месяц назад
Ran across this video. Raising the rails until they hit the ground and raise the truck's back end slightly. You've very likely just left marks or gouges in your customers road surface. Raise your rails high enough to fit under the pickup rollers but not touch the ground. Your sat stationary and then pulled the box forward up onto the rails. What if the box rear rollers are sized or broken. Depending on the ground surface. You've just likely gouged or left roller ruts wherever you loaded this box. Leave your brakes releasesd, retractable the cable a little until your rails are under the rail rollers. Bring the rails down slightly ensuring weigh on the rails and they are driven onto the ground surface. Now while your brakes are released and truck is free to roll. Retrack your cable, pulling the truck under the 'stationary' box your loading. When you get far enough under the box you can bring the rails down lifting the rear of the box off the ground. Hold your foot on the brake and continue loading the box. This process of letting the truck roll under or out, instead of dragging the box with load. Puts far less strain on the truck hoisting components.

No problem my goal was to help the new inexperienced hires get a grasp for what we do. There at least 3 of the guys I trained who’re still out there doing roll off. I even a guy who was totally new to rolloff get hired by my company then went home and was searching around. RU-vid actually stumbled upon one of my videos and watched it. He then came in the next day and asked if i made those videos. I did eventually become the ops manager for about 3 years. I did all the hiring and firing. Recently got out of Trash for better money.

After watching this video, and then searching other truck videos... I have the easiest driving job there is. I Work in a smaller population area. Just today....I had the back tires against 1 side of the road's curb, the box tight to the garage door and the Front tires against the curb on the other side of road, but it's still nothing compare to some these Trucks with log trailers, dump trailers, straight truck with pups, boom lifters. I guess they think we're bringing a little red wagon with a milk crate on it Nice job with that tub style, we only have a few of those. They are a total pain to line up if I don't have enough room to back straight into them. I'll line up the square boxes from 90* and only 40' in front of the box.....no problem, all day long

Once you Have your permit, you can start practicing driving and Hauling as long as you have a CDL Holder with you. The biggest Thing with hauling heavy is thinking way ahead, and giving yourself plenty of room. When you get really heavy you'll want to downshift and other little things, but the main thing is just paying attention, taking it slow, and giving yourself plenty of room.

You want to hear something funny, I'm the new guy in my company and I had to go to one of our yards and pick up a container. I told them dispatcher I could only remove a 15-yarder because all the twenties were double stacked. He told me you're supposed to take them. He said that's why they double stack them you just have to get some ratchet straps to tie them down to each other. I kept asking him if he was joking and he said no and eventually I believed him until I heard him laughing his ass off. Yeah that's the kind of thing I might tell the new guy. LOL

HENRY MARTINEZ step one is to go get a DOT physical. Then submit your medical card from the physical to the DOT. Next go and get a CDL-B permit from your drivers license branch. After all that is done I would start calling all the roll off dumpster companies to see who’s hiring. It’s better to have your permit before you apply. But not required. That’s my recommendation. Here on the east coast they are hiring roll off drivers everywhere so getting a job is easy.

Dave G for my company personally if there is any fill material involved we usually will not do an exchange. The weight over the 10 ton range can be destructive. The second criteria is whether we have any empty dumpster available. We regularly run out of dumpsters and are stuck, no matter the distance doing a “dump and return”. If it doesn’t involve brick or concrete or dirt, our dispatchers are very good at finding pickups to make before we head out to avoid the extra trip. I usually have a plan in mind before I ever start driving. So I can do the most efficient work. I avoid at all costs setting a full 30 of concrete anywhere.

I got the job. I went for a dry run with a driver last week and the truck went down lost air in the lines. I am not what I would refer to as mechanically inclined BUT this is where 20 plus years experience comes in handy. The first thing I did was go to the air tanks and start draining them and noticed excessive liquid that told me the air dryer had a problem. When the mechanics got there I steered them right to the problem it was a broken gasket. They did not have a spare I noticed an auto parts store across the street and the best we could do was an o-ring. Helped enough for us to get back to the yard. Every time the driver broke at a red light he would still lose pressure so I told him to put it into neutral break with his left foot and rev the engine with his right to keep the RPMs up. When all this got back to the boss he called me the next day and told me I am hired. He said he's very willing to train a guy like me. So right now I am extremely happy I want to thank you for your website which I plan on visiting on a regular basis thank you Brother 👍🏼

@@Santiago-hg6hk hey man, how are you liking rolloff?
@Santiago-hg6hk
@Santiago-hg6hk 2 года назад
@@Phillygthemessenger I got to tell you I'm loving it! I've been driving the truck for over 20 years and every job I've had till now was extremely physical. For a few years I delivered refrigerators washers dryers then I got a job delivering construction supplies. After that I got my hazmat and started hauling propane. I would have to pull the hose from the truck to the tanks. My territory was very hilly and Rocky and the tanks were sometimes as much as 150 ft from the truck. On any given day I could bang out about 40 stops. I would eat my lunch while I was driving and go through about three Red bulls a day. But roloffs at least from my perspective is such a cake job. Yes it can be stressful but physically it's the job I've always wanted. I've been on my own for a few weeks now and I'm only moving dumpsters from one company location to the other. It's great practice . Eventually I will be doing compactors and residential accounts. The territory I'm in has more than a few mansions and so you have to be very careful with the driveways. Also I'm finally getting time behind the wheel of 8 and 10 speed trannys. They sometimes call them splitters five low five high. They can be very unforgiving so you have to learn how acclimate to the truck if you're not at the right speed and RPMs she will not downshift. So that was a challenge but I'm finally getting the hang of that as well. No joke, it's strange that you asked me this question tonight because it was just this morning I was barreling down I 95 and thinking " Damn ! I really like this job! How about yourself what are you up to? P. S. I'm about to hit the hay I got to be up at 3:30. I'll get back to you tomorrow. Cheers

Does your roll off truck front wheels lift up in the air

james lindsay no not normally. It only does on a box over 17-20 tons

For who-ever roll-off drivers might be watching these comments.... What do YOU do, if the box to be picked up....is blocked? Does the "distance traveled" have any influence on your choice/answer?

Dave G for me personally I call first, then I’ll knock on a few doors if need be. Then if I can’t find the person I will leave. 15 mins max. If it is really close I don’t worry about it. If it is out of my way the customer will be charged a $150 dry run fee.

whats the max weight that you cable can hoist, how do you inspect the cables
@code3responsevideos872
@code3responsevideos872 5 лет назад
y25151956 the way it works it the hoist has a lift capacity. The hoist has a rated capacity of 60,000 pounds or 30 tons. The cable it self is rated for 70,000 or 35 tons. If the cable is not broken or frayed it is ok. A cable should last a very long time. I did break a cable once picking up a 40 full of sand! But really no inspection is required. If it starts fraying it will have a hard time getting around the pulleys and may get stuck.
@daveg2609
@daveg2609 5 лет назад
I broke a cable trying to "shake the box out", be careful how much material is stuck in there when You have it all the way up and then slide the box up and down the rails to get it loosened up. Might want to wait for the excavator to reach in there, if there is 1 available

You don’t chain lock the bin to your rails?
@code3responsevideos872
@code3responsevideos872 6 месяцев назад
We use straps not chains but it’s the drivers choice. I had an older truck that used chains and straps. Newer truck has a pneumatic hooker system

Also what do you do when the ground is so un level that the ICC bar is touching the ground but the rail is still to high to go under rollers?
@code3responsevideos872
@code3responsevideos872 4 года назад
Brandon Doel for that you have 2 options. Fist is to stage in place and hold down the brake pedal hard. This when pulling the cable will flex the suspension and lower it down. Second option is to pull cable tight and lower the hoist to raise the box up a few inches. Then stick wood lumber or bricks under the dumpster to hold it off the ground. Then lower the box on the supports and reset the truck to reload.
@daveg2609
@daveg2609 4 года назад
Is your ICC bar hinged? (This will only work in dirt) Raise the rails, hook your cable, pull it a little tight and drive forward, then finish pulling the box to you. release the parking brake ASAP. But Its tough on the winching cable and leaves ruts from the box "roller wheels"
@daveg2609
@daveg2609 4 года назад
This happened to me today. Raise the hoist frame so the main sheeve is about even with the tarp. Now back up & Just barely touch the box with the hoist frame. Raise the hoist. You will only be about 6" from the box front roller. See if you can back the truck & push the dirt or pull the box to you

Depends on experience level. Single axle drivers are making 14-18. CDL drivers are making 17-22. Just ball park numbers. If you don’t have a CDL get one for sure!

1- I know it’s not correct. I wanted to be outside the truck to get a better camera shot 2- you have done nothing to explain what your problem is or your view on the correct method 3- where are your RU-vid videos detailing this process helping new drivers get knowledge they need to make a living??? 4- new drivers will get training from their company, this is basic knowledge and they will learn the company’s way of doing things I can’t cover everything
