Why don't you leave it in neutral with handbrake up when parking. Avoids potentially driving forward if you turn the car on without engaging the clutch.
dang man i got a manual brz and i didn't even know how to drive it. My dad had to get it from the dealer ship for me. he had to drive it home for me. he would teach me 2 hours a day for about 3 days.. and after that i had to take it for my self because i had to give back my old car back. i live in LA where its bumper to bumper all day everyday. it was a very interesting experience. i hated it at first i kept messing up. i felt like people were looking at me but then after driving it everyday its gotten to a more natural feeling. sometimes when i get into an auto car i press on the resting pad thinking its a clutch lmfao just a quick story its annoying and irritating at first specially in an up hill. but its worth it you feel like a complete bad ass and not only that but driving a manual is a skill that you should have in case of emergencies and what not.
Going to probably have a very similar experience next month when I trade in my 3 series for a 370z, Toronto traffic is going to be annoying similar to your LA traffic.
ivan acuna I feel like I'm going through your exact experience!! I recently started driving a gt86 and it's really embarrassing when I stall. I'm currently trying to find the balance between the gas and clutch to get a nice smooth start but it really helps to see I'm not the only one with this problem! I really felt like I was alone in this situation :)
One thing... i'm a 17 year mechanic, and something that most people (including you) say, this is the correct way.... when your press the clutch you are DISENGAGING the clutch (disconnecting the engine from the wheels), when the pedal is let out (released) you are ENGAGING the clutch (connecting the engine to the wheels). Just most people don't realize this. Playing with the clutch on FLAT ground (like you do) is how I teach people. All in all, great video man!
Exoticars19 I began teaching my niece. before we went out for the first practice she showed me this video. she liked the way you explained stuff. I just get all too technical sometimes
Lol I'm a little late to this one but actually yeah, you wouldn't believe how much better I got at managing a manual when I was learning just by having it described to me the way you describe it. once I had understood what the clutch/and pedal are doing inside the car I got a much better understanding of what I need to be doing.
The thing is, you have 2 rotating disks that you need to interlock... so, low gas and slowly release the clutch If you are in an incline road, put a bit more gas.... it's really simple... in 5 minuts you learn it... in diesel cars, way easier, the clutch has some power, put the clutch half way and a bit of gas then you can speed up if you want.. always in 1 gear or reverse.., in gasoline cars, the clutch has no power, so you have to use a bit more gas as you release the clutch... find the balance betwen the clutch and the gas pedal, and you are set... its fairly simple.
this video is from 8 years ago so ill give you grace on not knowing exactly what to say. All in all this video has helped a lot! I've been watching videos for 2 weeks straight, and having my family teach me. Nobody has been able to explain how to smoothly stop the car. all i was hearing was "rev match downshift" from everyone, and getting yelled at when i stalled! thank you for putting it simply, im gonna go on a drive alone now!
15:10 The lunatic joke was hilarious but the main thing is. This part was absolutely perfect and the best detailed lesson on learning to drive a manual. You are the first person out of 10 different videos that taught me how to switch gears. Everyone else only talk about the intro and gear 1 only.
Best way to learn is by going out by yourself, knowing the basics of course. I had to learn myself. If you set your mind to something, you'll do it. First 3-4 days, I stalled about 5-8 times...couldn't get smooth shifts. I kept on practicing until I got it, now I can fully drive a manual car 👌🏽 and hate driving my 2017 Ford Fusion, which is an automatic. I drive my brother's car more than I do mine 😂. At first it's annoying and it makes you mad, but once you learn it you'll hate automatic transmissions.
thanks man, i applyed what you said about adding a little bit of gas while i released the clutch and i didnt stall at all in 1st gear , that advice helped a lot
Some people say that it's not good for your clutch. Then how come I went to UK and people were hitting the gas most of the time???????????? 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️ It'll wear on your clutch but doesn't just letting it stall make it even worse?
i was like wtf is this guy taking so long to explain maybe only for likes tmbut i continued to watch and i have to say very well explained i learned some good tips
I showed my dad this video I'm 15 I have my permit and we went to a dealership and drove a manual followed your steps and it was fine I plan on buying s BRZ when I'm older manual seems too fun to pass up too:)))
Don't get a nice car as your first, even if your parents are willing to. Get an MX-5, Civic, etc. You'll learn with less stress, and appreciate your expensive car more.
Alexander Tony he's saying that if you're just starting out then get a used car in case you crash or something then you won't have to pay for all the expenses.
Bro imma be honest with you this was the best tutorial I ever seen . I watched like 50 other vids with different camera angles and all types of shit and they still couldn’t explain the concept of downshifting. You helped a lot.
I randomly stumbled on this video because I’ve been looking up manual cars and how to drive them. By far this is the best video that has the best tips thank you.
Just bought a brz hyper blue version along with a twin turbo set from Crawford and this video really cleared up stick for me thanks and hope to see you on the road
This was so helpful. I am looks at getting a BRZ but I don't' want to be the woman driving an automatic sports car; defeats the purpose of even buying one. I have looked at other tutorials but this is fantastic because it's the same car and you repeat the steps a lot so I don't have to rewind a lot :) thank you!!
You remind me of the main character in the first 4 Fast and Furious movies. I really appreciate the driving manual lesson. Thinking about buying a Type R in the future.
Np thanx 2 you, you filled the gaps of information and details I was missing now if I ever get a chance 2 drive a stick I'll have no problem 💪great work
I'm like many people here who bought a FRS(BRZ), and it's my first stickshift. It's amazing that this car is waking up so much interest in manual. I'm trying to get smoother, my main issues are smooth upshifts and anticipating the correct RPM for rev matching.
the ideal RPM for chanching shifts is 3000..... it has enough power to take the next shift... for saving gas, 2500 is ideal.... But you can shift at 4 or 5000 RPM if you want you just waste more gas... to gain speed fast to overtake, just let the gear push the car, till 4000 or more.
I just bought a BRZ yesterday and had no clue how to drive stick, I learned last night and drove it to school today. I feel very weird but love it at the same time, i just need practice!!
The hardest part is getting the car rolling. After that It’s smooth driving. Just remember this: give it gas until you reach around 2,000 rpms then slowly release the clutch until the cars starts to move. After that give it a a little more gas and slowly release the clutch all the way
This video totally made it so much easier to understand how to drive stick shift. I've been thinking of trading in my automatic FRS for a manual transmission one. Seems really easy now after watching this.
I used to know how to drive stick. But then I got a cdl and I've developed habits that made this refresher useful. Today i bought a manual, first time in years it's not a super 10 at about 60,000lbs. Lol
i could tell he was really nervous in the making of this video lol.. but he explained everything pretty well and I'm liking this video more than any other! Good job man!!
the gas then clutch thing is good for beginners, but don't do it forever because it burns the clutch. If you can, you're better off learning the proper clutch then gas right away. Bad habits can tend to stick around and you'll wear the clutch down prematurely :)
It doesn’t burn the clutch the only way it burns the clutch is if you keep the clutch at the bottom point for to long after you have started to move already.
Thank You Sir, I tried adding gas first then release the clutch like you said. IT WORKED! Lol I get nervous sometimes getting out first gear though But Nonetheless Sir Thank You I Appreciate It Very Much. Awesome Car By The Way! Hope you have a great day my brother Take Care and Safe!
Lol no I don’t think so brother. I’m just starting and not saying I know a lot, but I DO presume that’s exactly how you end up spinning tires, even with some stock clutches 😅 2k is right.. “Dumping it” is what I ain’t too sure about.
+Shizukage In USA they all drive with automatic? Wtf is wrong with you murica :D? 80% of cars in Europe have manual gear box... Its easy to learn it....
None car people in the U.S drive an automatic. They just want the easiest drive possible I guess. Car people however do drive manual. If you think about it, more manual cars (sports cars) come from the U.S than anywhere else. Corvette, Vipers, Mustangs, Camaros, Challengers, etc. Trust me, as an American, we love our manuals!!
Also a Subaru owner here! i feel bad for owning such an sporty car at a young age; I feel spoiled about it oops. Anyways I'm still learning how to drive manual and my dad wanted me to practice driving in the actual street; which of course I dread and hope I never stall. Guess what happened? I stalled multiple times, one of them being when I thought the car died but I had the clutch engaged; I panicked so badly and tried to start the car when it was already on; that poor starter. I also managed to make the car shake violently because I let go of the clutch quickly. I still need much more practice and this video is very helpful! I don't know when I'm going to drive again but I'll keep this video in mind when I do!
@@TexasRevving was stuck on the middle of the steepest street grade (31% I think) in SF for 1/2 hour when I 1st learn to drive stick. Car kept rolling back and shutting off. I was so embarrassed and people behind me was pissed off, thanks to the person teaching me. Now, that street is so simple to go on.
I have a deposit down on a 2018 Civic Type R that I'll be picking up in about 60 or so days once it's delivered to the dealer. My only experience with stick shift is a 2 hour lesson I took last Friday. In the meantime, I'm watching videos like yours to make sure I am ready once time comes to pick up my baby. Thanks for making this video! I guess my car will cheat in that it automatically rev-matches for me. :)
Really good video i understand way more than other videos around 15:50 i under stand how to shift gears now when still driving. Usually i put clutch gas and then shift which stalls. Now i understand that clutch then while car is moving without foot on gas shift gear then clutch slowly out while gas slowly in
hi im studying car mechanic at school in belgium and 4days ago i drove a car for the first time and didnt stall i drove a couple times sinse then without stalling and today i stalled for the first time because i was afraid to give to much gas so thx for the tips ;)
idk why I watched this cuz I have no problem driving standard, but this is the same way I taught my buddy how to drive his gti when his dad gave up on helping him. I literally jumped in the driver seat of his car when he was on his lunch break and told him c'mon this will only take a minute. I showed him how I eased off the clutch with no throttle and just rocked it back and forth a little to get a feel for the engine then added gas and took off. After literally 3 tries he could take off smooth as butter.
Thanks so much for this video! I just bought Mazda rx8 and its a manual transmission and I don't know how on drive it yet, watching your video it's giving me many awesome tips. Thank you! Ps: you're cute 😜
I love these style of videos Even tho I've been driving stick for about a year now. it's still nice to watch. I learned on my dad's rx8 forever ago and didn't stall and watched tons of vids like this and so my dad didn't even like tell me wat to do. so then last October I drove my friends tt and stalled the shit out of it but I got it down and then I got a 5 speed Hyundai and I am now great at it and I haven't stalled in forever😂. I hope to one day get a BRZ or frs but yah I probaly sound like a ARROGENT little shit 😂.
Watched a ton of videos on how to drive manual and just the little things you included really helped. No one ever told me to let completely off the gas when shifting.
Stick is simple. Swimming is actually very specific, and complicated. However, one can easily be taught to swim, but driving stick just has to click for you.
I just went for a manual driving lesson yesterday. I was able to get the car into first gear without stalling on my first try! after watching all these youtube videos! and this one especially! But, I stalled on my second try, 6th try, 14try try etc.. I realized that I had to exert so much effort to control.. the soft touch of the clutch release, else it would stall, popping the clutch can happen without even moving the clutch pedal up all that much, even if you move it 1 inch too fast, it will stall. That's all it takes 1 quick 1 inch movement, and then pop! u stall, what ancient technology.... But, giving gas did make it easier but I was not liking the amount of effort I had to put each time to get that soft release. I'm sure this has to do more with listening to the car, muscle memory, and habitual, instinctual coordination than just understanding of the concepts. So when people say you need a lot of practice, what they mean is that, you need to give time for ur muscles to adjust to the mechanics of driving manual. If you think you have this ability to soft release a clutch without ever trying it, you may find that it may not be the case, clutch pedal is tighter, with a long push down/up and it comes up more like a Hook, more so than the other pedals, so it's more like lifting your leg off the pedal than it is slowly flapping ur foot back off of it. So you are using your leg to control the pedal than using just ur feet, like with the other two pedals. Why didn't youtube tell me this? ugh! My thigh bruh! Meanwhile on the fun side of things, switching gears was fun, upshifting definitely gives you that feeling of control, and instant satisfaction when you are changing gears, and just man handling the car! like 2nd gear bitch! 3rd gear bitch! yeahh showing it who's boss. However, I quickly came to the realization that, I just can't, or don't want to deal with gear changing.. My lifestyle is like... drive to wendy's drivethru.. and eat a burger with my right hand, and hold the steering wheel with my knee and... hold my cell phone with google maps on my left hand, and all kinds of other nonsense. I completely agree that manual drive shifting would be great for racing or just simply riding a car on a track, and other "known" locations where you can predict which gears to go into. I don't imagine manual will be too fun going to routes that you don't know. And with city driving.. I just don't see the point. And yeahhh.. I'm no racer. As far as highway speeding goes, which I like to do.. I'm usually doing this while already at 80mph switching lanes so I'm not exactly like getting into 20 mph upshifting to 80 each time I swerve lanes, so I don't imagine highway lane switching & car overtaking will be all that fun with manual either. On a track, however, downshifting into corners, and upshifting out of it must be a lot of fun, as turns show up at regular intervals and gives a person more involvement and assessment of driving skill used to measure lap times, whereas automatic takes all that fun away.
I am buying a BRZ in one week. I went in and talked to a dealer but failed to mention I've never used manual on a car. How hard do you think he'll laugh if I told him I rode dirt bikes as manual experience? lol?
Excellent video! Thank you so much, this helped me out so much. I already had a car before i passed and i just passed 3 days ago. I watched this video and it really helped. Can you please make a whole video on downshifting/rev matching, i mess it up sometimes. Do i need to brake or slow down before i do it? PLEASE make a video to explain and show the easiest way to rev match.
For those of you who havent learned yet, I suggest you learn on a car that has a heavy clutch and is somewhat difficult to bring the shofter into the correct gear. Every other stick shift car will be easy as hell in comparison.
i drove my grandmas truck from watching this video(this was my first time actually driving as well) i overestimated the amount of gas you needed and spun the tires
