Especially during the Ottoman era (and I think the Abbasid era, not sure), they literally fled from EU to take haven in Ottoman ruled regions. - keep in mind, hostilities were rampant in the Middle East. People were tribal and religious. So war fueds between tribes and factions were ignited from time to time. Chances are Jews had less hostility throughout their lives than the other Arabs and races there. And the history of a couple of of those Islamic empires are a testimony to the harmony Jews used to have with Arabs and other races there.
