How to drive with FLAPPY PADDLES GEARBOXES? Ferrari 458 POV

In this video I discuss flappy paddle gearboxes and demonstrate how to work them with my Ferrari 458 Italia. There are 2 transmissions that are considered flappy paddles in it's traditional definition - single clutch transmissions and dual clutch transmissions. I explain how each of these work in this video and then talk about some of the advantages and disadvantages of each.

Some things I learnt recently in my 360 with CS software.. In normal mode (non Sport mode), you still need to lift off a little to stop the shifts slipping / to make the shifts a little quicker. And we are talking a tiny amount of lift In "Sport" mode, DO NOT lift off. The computer just doesn't know how to compute it. Overall, with a little time dedicated to learning the shifts, paddle shifts can extremely rewarding especially if you drive the car hard. It allows you to focus on other things, which means you actually feel more focused on them. Having to focus on perfect manual shifts can be a little distracting (but also fun). Added to this, having a paddle shift in traffic (even if a little clunky) is far more relaxing. It's a lovely middle ground between manual and full auto. There's no doubt that a dual clutch is more refined, faster, less frustrating (at times), but there is simply more drama with single clutches. The shifts are visceral and occasionally quite violent, which I think adds something to a car rather than taking something away. Dual clutches to me feel very "German." And that's the problem. They're a bit too perfect. Great in an Audi / Porsche.. But in a Ferrari? Hmm.

Yeah totally different feeling between the 2 systems... Hell even the difference between the F1 versions can be dramatic

@@normalguysupercar absolutely. I'd even go as far to say that no two single clutch cars are the same! There's a really organic quality to each car, based on how the clutch is set up and various parameters etc. They are definitely eccentric things to live with. I guess you do have to be in the right mood sometimes, I'll definitely admit that!

Just been given a Portofino for the weekend by my local dealer as a thank you for loaning them a car for the F8 spider launch event late last year. I swear that during 'enthusiastic' driving' they have engineered in a little bit of a thump on the shifts, just to make it a bit more dramatic.

After driving manual shift cars for 30 years Im really quite happy to drive paddle shift cars. They are the best way to get the most out of sports driving on a country road as well as city driving in traffic. Its the best of both. Ill never want to go back to a stick shift car again if I can help it.

Trust me, they are awesome on back roads. Occasionally, on tight roads, I'm really grateful that I can have two hands on the wheel if space gets really tight or an apex comes at you faster than planned. It's nice to know you're not gunna accidentally shag your gearbox. Also it feels wonderful, like some kind of superpower, to blip downshift into a bend just with a flick of a paddle. It almost feels like a sound effect button rather than a gear change.

People: Click Join and become a member! Great perks! GREAT explanation on paddle shifters. It's crazy to see how each manufacturer does it differently. I have paddle shifters on my steering wheel of the i8, in addition to up/down shifting capability on the shifter itself, so I can shift on the shifter if I'm making turns. I love that convenience. But the i8 has a triple clutch transmission and two planetary gear-sets, giving it super fast shifts, but making it super complicated. Bless BMW engineer hearts. I'll have to do a video on this since it's super weird.

Regarding the fixed on column or steering wheel paddles, why don´t they have a very simple mechanism that allows you to clamp to the steering wheel, or push the ring forward and they will stay with the column ?

Hi Dan, thank you for your videos. I just got my 458 delivered and I noticed when I upshift "manually" at a higher rev range with stronger acceleration, the car pushes a bit forward before the acceleration of the higher gear kicks in, like it receives a kick for a millisecond when upshifting. This does not happen while driving in Auto mode. Do you experience the same or should I check the gearbox? Would appreciate your advice. Thanks for all the content, it informed and inspired me a lot to purchase the 458! Best, Julian

The single biggest advantage of a dual clutch transmission is that it can deliver continuous power throughout the shift. It is almost irrelevant how long the shift takes because it is delivering full power throughout the entire shift.

So I never drove an automatic transmission until I was almost 30. So of course I love a stick-shift ;) My problem with a flappy-paddle is the down-shift. It just doesn't feel natural to me. Up-shift: No problem! But I am just so used to "feathering" the clutch around town that paddle-shifting down just feels weird. Maybe I just need to give it more time?

The F355 was indeed the first road car to have a paddle shift, following on from Ferrari's invention of the system for F1. There was a version of the Mondial t with the same gearbox but it still had a conventional gear lever, which also worked the clutch. It wasn't a success! Dual clutch gearboxes are evolving fast and the SF90 and Roma both have a new 8-speed DCT which is lighter than the current 7 speed, and lighter than the old single clutch system.

Some questions I've always had about these gearboxes are: 1 When we want to rev but we're above 1st gear, we press both paddles, rev and when we release it, does it engage the right gear for the speed or does it go into neutral? 2 in the case of going into neutral, when using the right paddle, does the gearbox engage 1st gear or the right gear for the speed? 3 if we need to do an emergency braking, do we pull both paddles and the gearbox engages neutral even if we are in 5th gear or does it not let us do this? 😅

I never had a gear box like this. It's amazing! You don't feel any interruption in the acceleration. You step on the throttle, shift the paddle and the car just gets smashed towards the horizon. If you didn't feel the physical accelaration in your guts you might as well think you're using an xbox. I'm a fan of paddles on the column. If the paddles are on the wheel and that is turned 180°, the downshift paddle suddenly would be on the right hand side instead of left hand. Confusing. And who needs the paddles in corners? Good drivers finish shifting BEFORE the corner. ;-)

Perhaps but they would have to prove they know all those details and which car we were in and so on. Good luck getting that to hold up. And that takes effort... No reason to make it easy

@@normalguysupercar so where does my transmission fit in between all of these because if you're saying Lamborghini Ferrari and only a very few carmakers actually do dual-clutch Transmissions from what it sounded like you were suggesting that anything besides a high-end super car doesn't have an actual to a clutch transmission but mine is an actual dual clutch

It saddens me that manual transmissions are becoming extinct. I personally think there's nothing like physically running through the gears. I also believe it's a crime to have a high performance car that does not have a manual!

Lotus still offers a stick, problem is they only can sell NEW one model here in the US that is street legal (Evora). If they had a US Legal Exige I would buy one in a hot minute. One can still picked up some used models with 4 cyl engines, but I want one with the supercharged 6 cyl, and those are currently not avail here.
