Nice video Dan. I think some people think supercars are something more than just high-performance vehicles. When most of them only have 15 or 20,000 miles you’re not gonna be wearing out ball joints and CV joints and such. Like you said, when you look at the cars overall. You can tell whether it was taken care of or not

Dan, Thank you for putting some perspective into the supercar ownership experience. I appreciate your pragmatic approach and realizing that these aren't religious icons, or national treasures; I realize we're not talking about a 250 GTO or a 275 NART Spyder. Thank you again. Because of your videos, I'm planning on buying a Ferrari, or Lamborghini, in the next few years. I had wanted to get a supercar after college, but I lost the passion over the years. Funny how mileage is such a big factor in valuation of these cars here in the US. In Europe, for example, condition is by far the biggest factor and you will see higher mileage/km Ferrari's at similar prices to much lower mi/km ones. My 430 Scuderia just turned 33k mi yesterday. I bought it with 27k mi last April. This car has been super reliable. Every mechanic that has done service/inspection on the car has commented how they appreciate that the car actually gets used, therefore no leaks and runs like a Swiss watch. I agree with Dan, don't be scared of miles. In fact, I would never want a car that is 10 years old with 5k miles on it. That's a lot of sitting, which dries up seals and causes rubbers/plastics to be brittle among other issues.
@normalguysupercar
@normalguysupercar 4 года назад
For sure! The cars that sit in a garage all their life are just ticking time bombs. This goes for any cars! Take a toyota, have it sit for 99% of it's life and shit will start breaking.

When I bought my 991.1 I had a PPI done because I wanted to see the data that was stored in the computer. The mechanical stuff, paint condition, yada, yada, was obvious. The car looked new and drove like new. It had 30K miles and new tires. Everything matched up for a 30K mile car. The computer read-out was clean, and so I pulled the trigger. That was 2 years ago and it's been flawless and trouble free. The PPI cost me $350 which is competitive here in my area. I basically got peace of mind from the PPI showing that the car was solid from the computer data (e.g. no over revs, etc.).
@normalguysupercar
@normalguysupercar 4 года назад
That's reasonable. The cost was good and the reason was solid. Many times that's not the case

I would imagine one of the biggest obstacles for some people is the psychological aspect of buying one. What I mean is my huge fear of losing a boatload of money as the result of getting a lemon or just the slew of problems that "could happen" after buying one. Lol! I'm almost frozen in fear over something happening to my modest challenger srt and I only have about 65 thousand in it (I say "only" like a duche lol!) But I think you get my point. I would be a basket case if I owned a Ferrari. I think my fear is the result of myself putting Ferrari on a pedestal because it is my dream car. I actually get nervous if I park next to one out of fear I might scratch it only because I know how the owner feels about his car or atleast how I would feel about owning one. To be clear ,yes I know I have issues! Lol!!

Great advice Dan, imo a low low mileage car is bad as these cars need to be driven, and a track is a safe place to drive fast like what these cars are designed to do. Regarding paint - it's usually thin, less paint is less weight, the low end paint depth gauges are pointless as they can only measure on steel (cheap ali ones are still a few hundred), on most modern 'super cars' the panels are aluminium or carbon fiber, also they only measure the total thickness from primer to clear, the multi layer ones cost loads - a grand+, I just use a pdg to get an idea of paint condition and to see how much clear I am removing when polishing.

PPI comment - I paid over $500 for a PPI on an older Audi R8, in an Audi dealership! Waste of my money. The PPI was less descriptive then the free complimentary multi point inspections I get on my Audi RS3 when I go in for a service! Plus, they royally screwed up the PPI report almost causing me to purchase a car that had several major issues. That said, if it's a car you're looking at a fair distance away and you're unable to check it out in person before making a deal, I think it's a good idea to get a PPI (reputable one) before you make the hike out to xyz location to get the car. People buy these new and will upgrade when the next model comes out or they get rid of the cars warranty is over with also many get these cars on a lease and they don’t buy the car. I am in the market for a 430 and I have noticed the cars tend to have multiple owners. The cars also have a lower price point when over 25,000 miles and if the car shows an accident on Carfax then that brings down the price too. I would stay away a car that was a rental car.

If I ever start a car channel - first video I'll make - PPI's are scams. The mechanics put the car on a lift, walk around it with a flashlight, that's about it. I know there are good PPI's out there, but most are borderline fraudulent. All you have to do is ask some specific questions and you'll realize quickly that they didn't check anything.

Interesting, I def have mixed feelings on the importance of paperwork. I look at it as the diligence of the previous owners/owner.. However an exception in the case of any Mclaren... you'd better know 😂. Funny thing aside tho: when looking for my first Porsche at first I was obsessed about paperwork, until one guy said to me "I have everything but it's not much, the car is 3 years old and only driven in summer"... I thought about that and it changed my perspective.. So 1 oil change at the start and end of season... What is that going to tell you? Not much, not having the paperwork doesn't mean the oil wasn't changed.
