I really appreciate your Arizona-centric drivers ed videos. They really help. I've lived here most of my life and you do a really good job explaining our unwritten rules. I failed my first test because I was pretty nervous and rolled through a stop sign. I'm working on fixing on some of my habits like pulling into crosswalks, 'a couple over', rolling through stops, etc. Can say in the seven or so months I've had my permit that I've never used my phone.
@plopping-wetlyacademyofmot9639
Thank you for not texting and driving! If more people would stop texting and driving there would be a lot less deaths on the roads. Don't worry, you can just retake the test and learn from last time. There is nothing wrong with retaking the test. The only true mistake is something you don't learn from. 👍 Better to hear it from the DMV employee that you didn't make a real stop, than a cop as they write a $500 ticket! You'll get it next time. Update when you pass 🚗 ✔️ 📃

It's kinda crazy how much of this stuff I take for granted as common sense while driving. I grew up watching other people drive, so by the time it was my turn behind the wheel, I already had a good understanding of the do's and dont's.

I'm from the UK and I know how to drive. I was watching another video on RU-vid trying to learn the road test and they made it sound so scary and complicated for me, I didn't want to go through with it. But watching 4 of your videos, one after the other..you really have calmed me down as it doesn't look so scary. Is there a video of you driving in Coolidge az? As that's where I want to take my test..I would just love to see how bad the road test looks and how long it would be and what it is I need to learn because I can't find anything anywhere...I would really appreciate it. Thank you SO much ❤

I did find them very helpful and thank you so much for replying back to me. I do have more questions, I hope it's ok to ask you? As I can't find answers to any of them. My UK driving license has expired now and the written test I did has also expired, when I did that test, I didn't know I'd have to take the road test and I didn't feel ready, then Covid hit and everything shut down so now it's expired. Can I still do the road test without having a valid UK licence? And will I have to redo the written test all over again? 😞 Do I get the same road test as a student or will it be different because I drove for 20 years back home...I'm sorry for the million questions..so they don't really ask many questions on signs etc? Just a few about the lanes etc? I just don't know what to study as I can't find any answers to my questions and I'm so frustrated 😞 Thank you again for everything and I will continue to watch the rest of your videos 🖤
@plopping-wetlyacademyofmot9639
@Niki Strouthos no worries. I don't know if you can renew the UK license online, but an AZ permit can be renewed for a small fee . I don't think you need to take the test again to renew it.. (I could be wrong - call them to be sure) Or, once you renew the AZ learners' permit, you can take a license test at the DMV and get licensed the next day. Let me know if that answers your questions. Worst case scenario, you will have to take the online permit test (10 minutes or so) and then go in person to do the 5 minute driving test at the DMV
@plopping-wetlyacademyofmot9639
@Niki Strouthos if you do have to retake the permit test, the answers are direct quotes from the handbook at the DMV. You can also find the AZ drivers manual free online . There are practice tests you can take that are identical to the real test online as well. Don't worry it's easy. Mostly tedious questions about who has right-of-way and how close to park from a crosswalk, how far to stay behind a fire truck, etc

@plopping-wetlyacademyofmot9639
@plopping-wetlyacademyofmot9639 3 года назад
The #1 most common regret new drivers have in my experience is that they don't know all the street names and directions... Don't worry, you're not supposed to know that stuff right away when you're new. It comes in time, just start with your local area, start remembering street names around you, your mental map will grow if you just remember street names close to you, then further away. Also you can try using maps to see your direction, or if your car has a little digital compass that helps a lot. If you know where you're heading and where you are, you can never get lost. But don't worry it takes *years* in a big city like PHX. We are the same size as Philadelphia. Focus on local area, grow the mental map over time. Drive careful out there 🚗

21:36 according to the test I just took, you can’t cross double solid yellow lines from ether direction however if one side becomes a dotted line is then you can switch lanes on that side that is dotted, so in this case you were on the solid line side and did an illegal merge?
@plopping-wetlyacademyofmot9639
@plopping-wetlyacademyofmot9639 2 года назад
Good question, I get this one often from students. It's a common misconception that all solid lines are illegal to cross. There are many solid lines that are fine to cross. (Bike lane lines, HOV lane lines, yellow lane, etc..) You are referring to solid lines on 2 lane highways or mountain roads and passing/no passing zones in the center line. (When one car has a dotted line, it is OK to pass cars, but if one has the solid line, it is illegal to pass.) In city roads, if there were two solid yellow lines on the yellow lane, it would be illegal, but as I am not making a passing maneuver, but entering a turning lane, it is fine. Basically a solid line can designate a special lane, a turning lane or whether it's a passing or no passing zone depending on context. And there are a few times when it is OK to cross solid lines. Hope that helps!

Great Video, Branden! It helped me understand a lot of the rules! But i have two questions. When turning left on a green light, should i only turn to the closest lane, even though it`s the left lane, and i was on the right lane before entering the intersection? And also, on a roundabout, should i stay on the right or the left lane to merge/turn?
@plopping-wetlyacademyofmot9639
@plopping-wetlyacademyofmot9639 4 года назад
Great questions. Left turns take the left (closest) lane unless there is more than one turning lane. If there are two or more turning lanes, you end up in the same lane you start from. Lane 1 turns into lane 1, lane 2 turns into lane 2. Unless it's a freeway exit.. lol those are also different. In the roundabout on Happy Valley, only the outside (right) lane yields to the left lane. Only the outside lane turns out of the roundabout. I personally always take the inside lane (shortest distance) unless I plan to turn. But that's just my preference. Hope that helps. Let me know if any other questions.

What if the light doesn’t have a green arrow? Can we still pull to the middle? Then do left turn?
@plopping-wetlyacademyofmot9639
@plopping-wetlyacademyofmot9639 2 года назад
There are no laws against pulling out in the middle of an intersection to wait for a clear left turn in AZ. You don't always have to do it. Sometimes you should not. If there is a really heavy traffic time like rush hour, or if the intersection has poor visibility from the left turn lane, I do not. Only after i have seen the traffic to the sides stop at their red light, and if I can see without the car across the street blocking my view, then I will move out and a little to the left(without going over the center line) to wait. This makes the line of your turn smaller and quicker (safer) and allows you to make the light, because if you pull up in the middle when its still green, you get to finish the turn if yellow/red (after all the other cars across and to sides slow to a stop and its clear) Just remember if you go out there, you are past the point of no return. You have to clear out if the green signal ends, IF it's safe to. In AZ left turns never have right of way. (If you crash on a left, police probably going to be putting you at fault.) It is always legal to refuse to pull out in the middle, even if it takes 27 minutes, just stay behind the line, even until it turns red. wait til the next round of the signal to give a green arrow so you can make a safer turn. Lmk if any other questions!

Unfortunately I'm not really out there often. Maybe after I do some more videos though. Just don't speed and make complete stops and you can pass any AZ test. They're only like 5 minutes. What you can do in the meantime is hang out in the parking lot at the DMV, watch someone do the 3 point turn, and follow them (from a non suspicious distance) through the test to see the route.

Hello Branden.. I am taking my driving lessons from a professional for my driving license. I was watching your video, and I have a couple of doubts: 1. At 10:17 time of the video, you said “don’t turn across double yellow lines..” . so by that you mean that the car should have crossed the double yellow line, come a little nearer, between the solid double yellow line and the start of the broken yellow line - and in the gap he should have taken the left turn, am I right? 2. Also, can you answer this question please : suppose I am at a signal where the light is red. Can I make a U-turn at the crosswalk without entering the intersection? The ABC news15 gave a report after talking to the Chandler police Mr. Ben Holster that it’s legal, but I am confused. 3. And on the above context, if I can make a U-turn on red light (or say green light) and there is also a car willing to turn right on red light and has been showing his right blinker - who has the right of way? Thanks!
@plopping-wetlyacademyofmot9639
At 10:17, the car rushed a left turn at a high speed, when they should have waited. They also turned left over a "gore area," or painted triangle of lines on the ground. In our state this can be a $300 ticket and 3 points on your license. They should have pulled into the middle of the gap and waited for oncoming traffic to pass before turning. U turns on red are sometimes legal in AZ due to our intersection law being different than the way it is written in other states. The short answer is yes, it can be legal in many intersections, but you have to know the law regarding what defines an intersection boundary here vs. other states. And the reason why is a little complicated... Many times in AZ intersections, the crosswalk (not part of the intersection under AZ law) is far enough out ahead at the intersection, and the median island is spaced far enough back, that a U turn can be made without the car crossing the "prolongation of the lateral curb lines" and entering the intersection. If that is the case, and the car making a U turn on a red signal has made a complete stop, and yielded to *all* other traffic at the intersection, (and if the layout of the intersection allows it) a u turn can be made on red, without it being illegal. But it is never something that you will *need* to do, it's just technically not always illegal due to AZ intersection law and the way it is written. In my decades of driving in this city, i have never needed to, it's just a cool flex you can do here, since it's sometimes not technically illegal. "Lateral curb line" is the term to search for more info on this, There should be some images that come up from AZ, including a Twitter page from a Gilbert, AZ police dept with a picture. Here is one quick reference to the site you mentioned: www.google.com/amp/s/www.abc15.com/news/operation-safe-roads/operation-safe-roads-is-it-legal-to-make-a-u-turn-on-a-red-light%3f_amp=true This diagram has the red lines at the lateral curb lime boundary, showing a situation where this would be legal in AZ since the car never truly entered the intersection by passing the red line: imgur.io/gallery/1rrTYnC To answer your 3rd question, AZaw says Right on red must yield to "All vehicles in the intersection." (Including U turns) But if both vehicles had a red signal, neither has the right of way. (Many times this can be the case)

Can you get in trouble for waiting too long to go at a intersection? Like if I’m going straight and the vehicles to my sides are most likely far enough for me to go, but I just wait for them to go anyways? Would I fail my test for that? Also, if someone technically has the right of way but waves you on, is it okay to go?
@plopping-wetlyacademyofmot9639
Good questions! Yes if you space out, or wait too long for no reason you can lose 2 points. You can lose 20 and still pass, so it's not a big deal. If you're waiting because you can't see or arent sure it's safe, there's no penalty. If it's your right of way and someone waves you on, like at a 4 way stop. Give them a chance to go, and if they refuse to go, and are waiting on you, better to keep it moving than to hold up traffic. This does happen sometimes on road tests. I use my best judgement if I can see the student is trying to be safe I won't mark them down.

@plopping-wetlyacademyofmot9639
@plopping-wetlyacademyofmot9639 3 года назад
Good question. It is specifically illegal to speed up on a yellow. Not only is it illegal, its stupid too. Let those idiots honk their little heads off. If its not an ambulance or fire truck honking, ignore it. I have been honked at for stopping at red lights and stop signs. You are going to get honked at by rude or stupid people for your whole life. Ignore it. They arent the boss of the road. Always approach intersections with your foot ready over the brake. Intersections are the place where most of the crashes and deaths happen on the road. They are the most likely place that someone's going to run, turn or jump out in front of you. Going through the most dangerous place on the road with your foot on the gas just makes it take longer to stop and will make the car accident have way more energy when an accident does happen at the intersection, causing a normal crash to become a fatal crash or a pileup. In the law ARS 28-701 it says you should reduce your speed to whatever is reasonable approaching intersections and train tracks. If that means you have to slow down, then go slower through the intersection to see better If somebody is following you so closely that they can hit you if you stop when the light turns yellow, then they will be buying you a free car because if you rear-end somebody you are always at fault. It is never your fault if someone rear-ends you.

If you are going straight on through a roundabout don’t signal until exiting the roundabout. 3. @@ronr.511 If you are over 18, you do not have to get a permit before your license if you're ready to take the test. However, if you still need to practice first then you need to take the written test and get an instruction permit still. You can't be behind the wheel unless you have a permit or license. The difference between an over 18 and under 18 permit is that over 18 there's no mandatory waiting period in between. Once you get the permit you can take the test at any point after when you feel ready.

I don't understand your story about how you were at fault for going through a green light and the other person was running the red light. Were they going straight as well? You said they didn't yield to your right of way so I'm confused as to why you would get a ticket?
@plopping-wetlyacademyofmot9639
I didn't understand at the time either because I thought that if you have a green light, you automatically have the right of way. This is not true. You never just "have the right of way" if someone else doesn't yield to you, by jumping out in front. Since the other guy ignored the light, failed to yield, and ran the light, he did not yield the right of way to me. It was my responsibility to look and make sure the intersection was actually clear before just blindly entering because the light was green. It's just a green light bulb. It doesn't have any real power or intelligence, to warn of incoming danger. It's up to you to use your eyeballs to check that the area is really clear before you drive your car through it Since I was just zoned out looking straight in front of me, not paying attention to what was about to happen on the side, the officer's opinion was that I could have prevented this, but didn't. Since I failed to look for potential hazards, and could have stopped and avoided the crash if I was paying attention, but chose to just trust a light bulb, and not look around first, I was found partially at fault for failure to avoid a collision. This was at 51st and Bell road in Glendale. There are 3 wooden crosses at the sides of this intersection, memorials to others that have lost their lives at this light. There are many more people that DONT have memorials at the stop light where they died, that we don't know about. 59 ave and Indian School, for example is the most dangerous intersection in the state. There are zero crosses / roadside memorials there, so not a lot of people don't realize that there are over 180 crashes a year at just that one stoplight! ALL of them are preventable. Moral of the story: you never know what kind of drunk or entitled person is going to do something stupid and cause an accident, but if you're always on the lookout, you can see it coming and brake to avoid getting hit. Just look both ways before entering an intersection, YOU make sure it's all clear. Don't just be a dumb kid like I was and trust a green light bulb.

Good afternoon. I used your videos a few months ago to help me with my test. I have a question about school zones. The azleg website specifies that you must slow down between the portable school zone signs, and says it's the school's responsibility to remove them when school isn't in session. The azleg website does not mention the permanent "when flashing" signs that seem to be common here. In midday at a school near my house, the "when flashing" signs will be off but the roller signs will still be out. Am I supposed to slow down or not? Thanks.

@plopping-wetlyacademyofmot9639 9 месяцев назад
Good question. The school by my house is similar. If the portable sign is out, it's a zero tolerance 15mph zone with double fines. Some schools leave them out all day or forget to take them down, but the police can and do ticket you for going over.

@wyattazcooks thank you for watching! I love when people ask questions like this. Im always happy to talk traffic laws. AZ Title 28-701 paragraph B: "B. Except as provided in subsections C and D of this section or except if a special hazard requires a lesser speed, any speed in excess of the following speeds is prima facie evidence that the speed is too great and therefore unreasonable: 1. Fifteen miles per hour approaching a school crossing. 2. Twenty-five miles per hour in a business or residential district..." The title of this law is "Reasonable and Prudent Speed; Prima Facie Evidence; Exceptions." This is the law usually cited in speeding tickets on public roads. Technically it is always illegal 24/7 to exceed 15mph in any marked school crosswalk in AZ. This law also does not mention signs need to be posted or any other requirement. The conventional wisdom is that only on a school day or if a special sign is active, is the 15mph enforced. (Only school hours on school days.) I mostly agree with this. The only exception I can think of is if the school is hosting a special event after hours and there will be many pedestrians around nearby. This is common even during summer months. For that reason I usually just go with 15 mph on a school day always, 25 if not a school day but go 15 if the school appears to be occupied or if pedestrians nearby. 👍 The law revolves around the phrase "reasonable and prudent" and I think that is safely reasonable in court with a judge.

Your excerpt on reasonable and prudent speeds at school crosswalks is interesting. I was referring to 28-797 paragraphs D, F and H: "D. When the school crossings are established, school authorities shall place within the highway the portable signs indicating that school is in session... School authorities shall maintain these signs when school is in session and shall cause them to be removed within one hour after the end of a school session or pursuant to an agreement with a city or town." "F. A vehicle shall not proceed at a speed of more than fifteen miles per hour between the portable signs placed on the highway indicating that there shall be no passing, that school is in session and that the driver shall stop when children are in the crosswalk." "H. A vehicle approaching the crosswalk shall not proceed at a speed of more than fifteen miles per hour between the portable signs placed on the highway indicating that there shall be no passing, that school is in session, that the driver shall stop when children are in the crosswalk and that the civil penalty will double." What these laws seem to imply to me is that the speed restriction is only relevant when the signs are on the road. D suggests they are temporary, by giving a deadline for schools to remove them. F relies on the signs, while H says 15mph approaching crosswalks is only necessary in between the signs. Good eye on the engine. Galant VR-4 showing the world a turbo 4 cylinder can kick. I don't know all the exact prices I just do the teaching, but I can tell you for the money, ours is one of the best values you can get. Good question. A lot of new drivers struggle with this! For everyone, the root cause is different. For some, it's just fear of getting in a crash, for others it's a mix of other factors. (Naturally anxious personality, fear of failing, etc) Having anxiety about doing dangerous things is normal. Car accidents are the leading cause of death for people under 25. So it's natural to be nervous. There isn't a one size fits all cure for everyone, although I can tell you it's definitely not drugs 😂. Practice often (within your abilities) if you're only comfortable with parking lots and neighborhoods, then just do that 50 times until it bores you. Move up to gradually busier and bigger roads until you get used to it. Eventually it will become easy. If you can, book some driving lessons. Getting exposure to difficult situations with a professional driver next to you can be a much safer alternative (although sometimes costly) to risking your own car. Send me an email to branden.carnahan@yahoo.com if you need to book some lessons. I can put you in touch with my driving school.

@plopping-wetlyacademyofmot9639
@plopping-wetlyacademyofmot9639 4 года назад
1. Practice more. There is no substitute for practice. There's no shortcut. You just have to get in there every day and practice something, anything.. Whether it's parking 10 times forward and 10 times backed in until you can do it every time easy, or just driving 10 minutes a day around the neighborhood, you gotta get out there more.. The *only* people I ever see with driving anxiety long term are those with the least amount of hours behind the wheel. Either their parents won't let them practice, or they are older and no one to drive with them.. Get out there more, (do only what you are comfortable with - even if that means only one block around in your neighborhood every day for a month, some practice is better than none. Stay in that one block and never leave it til you are comfortable with it 100%) Then *slowly* add more roads to your drive, and learn the area. 2. Learn the rules of the road, know them well. Spend time studying and learning it online. Everything you see will make more sense if you really understand who has right of way and why. Making order out of the chaos takes the fear out of the equation. Here's every driving law in the whole state: www.azleg.gov/arsDetail/?title=28 Sometimes I will just scroll through this when I'm bored and look for something that interests me, like, what is a reasonable and prudent speed, and when are u-turns illegal...etc. You can always learn something new. If you know something inside and out, it can't intimidate you. Hope this helps. Drive careful out there!

If I don’t go at a green light because I don’t want to risk my car getting hit, wouldn’t that make a lot of people angry and honking at me because I feel like AZ has a road rage problem too lol
@plopping-wetlyacademyofmot9639
BR XO isn't getting honked at a little better than getting hurt or killed in a crash? I worry less about what strangers think, and more about keeping myself and my passengers safe. it is legal to pull up into the middle everywhere, but it's not always wise. Knowing the difference takes time... In general, Gore area improves view, pull into the middle if your left turn lane has one, and if you can see. no gore area: use extreme caution pulling up into middle, and only if you can see whole road. If you can't see, wait until you can. There are a lot of variations and every intersection is a little different. Some without gore areas are laid out where you can see, some with gore areas are still blind. The point is to be careful because with the speeds people drive and run red lights at, it can easily kill you to guess wrong if you couldn't see and went out there anyways.

When two vehicles enter or approach an intersection from different streets or highways at approximately the same time, the driver of the vehicle on the left shall yield the *right-of-way* to the vehicle on the right." ARS 28-772 "The driver of a vehicle within an intersection intending to turn to the left shall yield the *right-of-way* to a vehicle that is approaching from the opposite direction and that is within the intersection or so close to the intersection as to constitute an immediate hazard" ARS 28-773 "The driver of a vehicle shall stop in obedience to a stop sign as required by section 28-855 and then proceed with caution yielding to vehicles that are not required to stop..." (Yielding means giving right of way to someone else.) ARS 28-774 "The driver of a vehicle about to enter or cross a highway from a private road or driveway shall yield the *right-of-way* to all closely approaching vehicles on the highway" ARS 28-775 (emergency vehicles) "...from a distance of five hundred feet to the front of the vehicle and that is giving an audible signal by siren, exhaust whistle or bell, the driver of another vehicle shall: 1. *Yield the right-of-way* " ARS 28-777 "person driving a golf cart or a neighborhood electric vehicle pursuant to section 28-721, subsection C shall yield the *right-of-way* ..." 15:40 drives me NUTS in Arizona! If you can relieve traffic behind you, by pulling up to the middle of the intersection, be a bro and do it! We are all trying to get somewhere (presumably on time). If I have to sit through another cycle of the light (maybe at EVERY INTERSECTION), it just makes me hate most Arizona drivers who don't pull up. I just don't understand this train of thought. Talk about entitled. It just feels like a jerk move to me (or perhaps maybe, they just want to get back to a text).
@plopping-wetlyacademyofmot9639
Just leave on time 🤦 it's not the cautious (or overly cautious) driver in front of you's fault that you didn't leave on time today. (Talk about entitled... imagine thinking it's other people's fault you left too late) There is absolutely nothing wrong with being able to see 100% before you take a risky left turn across 3 lanes of oncoming traffic. Since any crash during a left turns fault is usually the one making the left, and likelihood of severe injury or death due to increased odds of a T Bone crash...it makes sense for new drivers to be cautious. Sorry you chose to see this positive as a negative. There are intersections where you should pull out into the middle (59th Ave and Bell, 83 Ave and Happy Valley, Cave Creek rd and Union Hills Rd, intersections with a gore area and the left turn traffic across the street does not block your view) There are also places where pulling out is NOT a good choice and just makes the car across from you bigger and block your view more (39 ave/happy valley -in the video, 99th ave and Mc Dowell, 59th Ave and Greenway, etc.) "...most Arizona drivers that don't pull up..." 1. It's not most Arizona drivers. Most Arizona drivers do pull up. 2. It's not a legal requirement anywhere to pull into the intersection before a left turn . I'm sorry you chose to take this outlook. It's a free country. Choose to see whatever you like. I understand your frustration but it is hard to imagine allowing something so tiny to ruin my day. However, despite the mild inconvenience, I am glad less people may die as a result of being more careful, and I'm glad about that. It's all perspective. 👀
