How to DROP IN on your SURF SKATE!! (Bowl Tutorial Pt 1.)

One thing a lot of people are hesitant about with surf skates is dropping in on a ramp. Especially if this is your first experience on a skateboard, it can be pretty intimidating to trust those wobbly trucks. This week on Surf Skate tips, I break down the drop-in process step by step with plenty of slow-motion examples.

Thanks for this tutorial man, I'm going to need it badly. I just started surf skating at 45...which means there's about 30 yrs since the last time I was on top of a skate board. It's incredible how some old dreams just don't die 🙌

Nice! I put this off for sooooo long. When I finally got the guts to try it I was amazed at how it really wasn't that different from doing it on a regular skateboard. But yeah, can't emphasize enough that you can't back out of dropping in once that nose starts to drop. I went 80% commitment my first time on a regular skateboard and sprained my ankle. No less than 100%. Now my 8 year old can do it and makes fun of how she beat me by 30 years and got hers first try!

It seems like it would be so different!! Dropping in in general seems to be one of these direct moments of fear you need to get past, but after that it’s like muscle memory. That’s awesome you and your daughter can share skating together. Looking forward to seeing more of your videos man! Thanks for watching

I really want to do it. Did it like 8 times in total (6 today). Got totally wasted. Always too much on tail and not on front foot so I felt on back, elbow all these times. The problem is that I am quite confident on all those previous ramps and such but this easiest dropin possible always waste me. There is no midstep that would help.

I built a surf skate with the Waterborne adapter. The first setup wasn't where I needed it to be to learn true surf skating so I rebuilt it in another board with shark wheels and now it is awesome.

But on the other side, I have done stupid fast speed on the Carver on flat and hills in Lake County, I need a young guy like you to take "wind boarding" to the next level, look is up on You tube.

I was taught to drop in looking down to focus energy and weight down and forward. I look up once I'm off the ramp. The skate coach said it's like walking down a stairs, you generally look at the steps. Should I shift to looking up instead? 😅 I haven't had an accident using my look down technique.

@WorkForAvocados
@WorkForAvocados Год назад
I don’t remember the wheelbase for that one unfortunately. Recently switched to a Whitetail and that one is a lot wider at 17”. Before that I never put much stock in wheelbase. I will say though, anything that has a bit of a nose will help locking you in more. I think with surf skates the flatness is great for putting all your weight in slides but the magic is trying to find what works best for you!

i broke my ankle trying to learn to drop in on my carver. i can (could) ride in on a steep ramp into the bowl, about 3ft bowl. i think i skipped a few steps. do you recommend learning with a regular skateboard first?
@WorkForAvocados
@WorkForAvocados Год назад
Sorry to hear that. I’ve broken my wrist skating it’s not fun. I would say it really depends on what you most feel comfortable with before learning. If you’re already riding a surf skate then I’d say stick with that. Switching back and forth can lead to some confusion in muscle memory. If I try to hop on a regular board at this point I feel more unsafe because I’m not use to using such a rigid straight line. Maybe tighten up your trucks a bit if you’re having difficulty and also mentally I always made sure that I could carve up to that height and do a backside kick turn before I would go for something on the lip. Also finding an area that wasn’t necessary a half pipe so I could focus on the drop in part and not have to be concerned about an impending ramp on the other side. Not every area has a 2ft ramp so if you can’t find something that small, maybe even a parking curb or something to the extent. Best of luck on your recovery 🤕
@ThinLineMedia
@ThinLineMedia 3 года назад
The biggest problem with surfskates is the very short tail. I can't lock my balance in the beginning because I have almost nothing to stand on. And my front foot keeps sliding of the board because there is no concave in the nose. Probably will get another deck for park riding.
@WorkForAvocados
@WorkForAvocados 3 года назад
Agree 100% with you!! I ride a C5 truck but i ride a 10” Chris Miller Welcome deck and feel like it’s a major upgrade. The standard surf skate decks are not the best for performance training. Thanks for watching and best of luck!

@WorkForAvocados
@WorkForAvocados Год назад
hey im sorry for the late response on this. I would say that the vert of the ramp does play a little bit of a part in the first initial drop in because if it's super steep like bowl coping there may be a very small moment of weightlessness. But if you suck your legs up a little more on steeper ramps it helps a lot. Hope your skate journey is going well
