I find this video KISS, simply easy, accurate, and the best way. I'm doing my bleach spilled paches, favorite pants now. Sink method! No clean up, makes a lot of sense to me. No pails etc, common scense. My first dye & public internet response because I was so impressed by this video, and I have to do this without getting stressed out. Thank You.

I just dyed some light blue jeans, overalls, 2 dresses and shorts! They’re in the wash now but they look good so far! Your tutorial was easy and straightforward. Thank you!
A big thumbs up from Australia. I'm an aging gent and reading the instructions on the packaging resulted in information overload. Found this video, followed the steps, and my favourite cargo shorts (I live in the sub-tropics) have gone from faded blue to black as black and look new (unlike their owner). Thank you.
I've been doing this for years (successfully - they look like new when done) but never have used dish soap. I am going to research the benefits of the soap. I also just use two bottles and dye all of my black clothes at once (keep agitating so they don't get a mottled effect). I used to just do this in my old washing machine and turn it off to soak, then agitate off and on. The new washing machines will auto drain though so I've been doing the stove top method for a couple of years...
Thank you for this video. I did use the black dye on my faded black jeans and they look great and like new. Now I'm using it on my wine colored jeans, can't wait to see the results.
Do I still need to use that rite dye fixative it's my first time using it and I need it for my work clothes the black is all faded and I need it to stay black
If you want it to hold better, before washing it, let it soak in a mixture of water and a few teaspoons of powdered food grade citric acid for a couple hours, or add it when washing. That will help the colors lock in.
jonnycatland1987 I’m assuming you were trying to spell narcissism as well as assuming you have no idea what a true narcissist is. If you did, you’d know why Narcissistic Personality Disorder/Sociopathy isn’t a punch line.
The results looked good but what if I were to dye super light denim jeans; will I need to keep dying it till I get the color i like? Is it even worth doing that? Thanks.
There are formulas on the rit website for doing this. Ex adding a specific amount of orange to the black dye bath to dye blue colored fabric. This has to do with color theory.
That was an awesome job.... Great way to explain the process!!! In my findings, I figure less water... Brings out more boldness of the dye in the garment.... All in all great vid!!!
I got a bleach stain on my black Calvin Klein cargos so I purchased the Rit liquid Dye. I followed your instructions. Instead of a sink, I used a large plastic bucket and some bbq tongs. My sink wasn't adequate for rinsing so I was stuck in the bathtub which was quite an ordeal trying to rinse out all the dye (I wish I had used gloves). I'm now washing them in the washer as I type this, but prior to that I could tell how incredibly black they were even when wet, and I couldn't see the bleach stain either. I'll see what happens after I dry it. Thank you for doing this.... I got one more tanned cargo i gotta do... and I dread it, this took some WORK!
Omg I got my $60 tshirt with bleach today when I was cleaning my shower cos my mum told me to get some for the toilet but I ended up cleaning other things and didn’t know it would ruin my clothes. Lesson of the day. Use bleach with old clothes 😂 Thanks for this!!
thank you, while we are certainly not your target audience, we truly enjoy and found informative your 'dying back to black' posting. ... and yes it did work, again many thanx. #cheers
@Karen Johnson have you washed the dyed material after you dyed it? Don't want to ruin a whole load of clothes if the dye gets all over everything in the washer.
About 3-4 shirts depending on how black you are going and how black they were before. Dont bleach before hand, as that damages cloth and it wont take dye as well. If you want REALLY black do the stovetop method rather than the sink(if you have a pot big enough).
& if something just fits so good, as well in good condition but is fading, it sucks! So dyeing them back is the business. I had done it a long time ago but figured I'd watch a video. Thanks for the help!
Huh why wash it after that fades it again instantly lol. I used this for spot treatment on my pocket area cause it fades from stuff being in your pockets which is very annoying. I mixed the dye with hot water and dish soap and dabbed it on pocket area it worked great.
I like the video but definitely do not recommend soaking your clothing material in the sink, use a stock pot or 5 gallon bucket. I went through the trouble of ordering my dye online, boiling water and wasting 2 cups of salt. When I used the tongs my sweater caught on the drain plug and all the dye went down the drain. I burnt myself in attempting to get the drain plug repositioned. Utter waste of time and $!
It is best to let black jeans air dry. When cotton clothes come out of the dryer small light fibers left up and give a less dark appearance to the garment.....
Nope but getting rid of clothes and two black skirts have bleach stains, one on both front and back. Since I also want some black jeans and I have about 5 blue ones, might be worth a bottle!
Can 1 bottle handle a few shirts at the same time? Just wondering if it would dilute out too much. Thanks for this tutorial. Sizes are scarce and costs are up so this is a great bit of info 👌
You make sure it’s clean BEFORE you dye them. After you have dyed them and they’re dry. You can wear them, then wash as normal when dirty …put them with other dark/black clothing when you do wash them. Stick to cold water.
Simple & easy tutorial. I haven't started the project as of yet. I have some tops & a turtleneck that are in need of recoloring. Will keep you posted with the outcome.
I got this brand new Dior black shirt and Dior across written in White. I got white paint on my shirt. I cleaned it up as best as I could and I could see stains. My question is , if I redye my shirt will the white letters turn black or stay white?
Does the black bleed into your other clothes when you do laundry? I have the dye and I’m ready to try it but I’m scared if I t will get on my other clothes later on lol.
You definitely want to test it before washing with other items. I used Rit many many years ago, following the instructions on the bottle, and it definitely bled into other fabrics. I would end up forgetting what I’ve dyed and ruin clothes. This was a while ago though, so I don’t know if they’ve improved their formula.
I have two white stains on my pants and I put the dye in a bucket with hot water added a little salt 2 table spoons 🥄 and I left it for 1 hour cam back washes of at the white stains are still there wdf
It seems like it strips unnecessary containments/synthetics/dirts as well as makes the materials more susceptible to retain the dye. Sort of like it's good to wash your hands before applying lotion to our body idk haha hope this helps
Excellent video, clear, precise instructions. Everything you need to know . I have had rit dye in my cupboard for around a year now, but never had the confidence to use it.. gonna try now, thank you.
With the onset of the COVID-19 and the required need to disinfect everything in order to remain safe and socially responsible, my black jeans took a pretty heavy hit over four months with bleach stains. As these were my favorite jeans I was eager to find a solution. This video And its author provided an easy and effective way to solve my problem. Well done and thank you. Beau
Same here! I was folding laundry and looking at my sad, faded black pants. My pants always seem to fade before my shirts, too. Now I can be back in black 🖤
Jeans and pants are hard to stir and move..is it better washer machine if so is it the same process, wash with hot water? At what point you add the rit color stay( dont dye bleed) bottle?
It like a bit of work but even good shorts are pushing a C note in Canada these days. Micheal’s Store has some of this Dye so I should Try. My is not to reason Why.
The same happens to me at work! haha I have tried to dye over top of bleach stains and it WILL dye the spot but it won't match the unbleached fabric around it. It will at least make the spot look less visible than before. :)
I don't mean to be simple but i have a question please. So i want to dye my black puma sweat pants but at top left is in white lettering PUMA. How do i keep that white...
Hi so this goes to the same for that I bought a two pack that says back to black but it says jet black on it the same instructions for the one you just did for the regular black right. And does it work all right with synthetics also
I followed the exact same process, my denim blue shirt dyed with black rit dye, didn't get black, just dark blue. I found is better to machine dry rather than air dry. I'm thinking to dye it again this time leaving my garment for one hour in the pigment diluted in hot water and use the rit fixative
Hey how do you dye a black hood that has a print on it, mine is black but been wanting to redye it because its a great hoodie, plus can I use carpet dye on clothes?
If you avoid putting the fabric in the dryer after you dye it then no, the fabric will not be as soft as before. If you do dry the fabric in the dryer then yes the fabric will be almost as soft as it was before!
Thank you I had dye my car seats. After that i dyed it using a spraying bottle to soak it in for better coverage since I wasn't able to drench it in. But I also used a soft brush to kinda soak in then dried it with a heating gun as a dryer works very well and still soft. 😊 thank you pretty lady
Well after a few days since I work on my project. The black fade a bit not sure if I didn't let it cure long enough but it isn't as bad maybe just needs more coats.
Jasel, a friend of mine who dyes fabric and makes clothes told me black is very hard to dye and the clothes will come out brownish. Do you ever find this to be true? Thank you.
