I used very diluted black acrylic paint to dye fabric gray. I noticed that diluted black dye doesn't work as the dye turns bluish purple. So happy with the result.

I have been hoping that you would do a video on dyeing fabric with acrylic paint. I am impressed with the ease of the process and the simple supplies. I do not own any distress inks at the moment but will hope to obtain some when it is safe to shop in my area or to order online after the winter cold has passed. I do have some old acrylics to use up and lots of fabric scraps to try. I am busy for awhile finishing a crumb quilt but the dye project will be put in my queue. Thanks for sharing your process.

@@srta.catrinabrowningyguerr6946 I'm not sure if your question is for @Susan Taylor Brown or me, but I'll give my answer - I'm making fabric for other art projects and not clothing. I usually use paint made for textiles, so unless I use a heavy amount it remains quite soft. I hope that helps.

Since I don’t do the type of art that goes in the washing machine, I don’t test for that however, if you think about any time you’ve gotten paint on your clothes and then sent them through the washer, it doesn’t really come off. If you are trying to paint clothing, that will regularly go through the washing machine. My two suggestions are one use a fabric paint or to use a fabric, medium with acrylic paint as it will help the fabric stay softer and permanent.

Hi, you did a lovely job on your fabric. How long did you leave the fabrics in the dye baths? When did you rinse them if at all, and how did you dry them without getting paint everywhere? Thanks!
@SusanTaylorBrown
@SusanTaylorBrown 10 месяцев назад
It varies when I do this, sometimes I dip them in and write back out again sometimes I leave them and go do something else but really it just takes a few minutes. I rinse them in till they run clear and I really can’t tell you how long that takes because it all depends on how much pigment is left in the paint when you do this. Since I don’t do the type of art that goes in the washing machine, I don’t test for that however, if you think about any time you’ve gotten paint on your clothes and then sent them through the washer, it doesn’t really come off. Ooh, you think this would work (and not be at all stiff) on cloth napkins (I cut/hemmed from a flowery, white tablecloth)?
@SusanTaylorBrown
@SusanTaylorBrown 3 месяца назад
I’ve learned since doing this, I would add fabric medium to the mix and then they would not be stiff. I forgot what the ratio is since I’m not doing this kind of stuff anymore, but you can get the cheap fabric, medium and mix it with your acrylic paint and it should work fine and doesn’t change the hand of the fabric too much.
