Hoping to get an answer. I know this is an older video. I have a very large couch I'd like to dye with chalk paint, your technique saved me a months with of work AT LEAST because I can dye the seat covers instead of painting them by hand! But only if I 1. Don't need to add wax to the covers after I wash them? 2. Do you think the color difference will be off because I hand painted the frame and dyed the cushions? Thanks for the tip this is great information ☺️

Super cool! Didn't know it was non-toxic! I was hesitant to use fabric dye due to that reason. I've done natural tie dye with vegetables and spices before. The colors are very vibrant BEFORE washing but fade quite a bit. It's a science! One question: how did you do the different color tie dye-looking one? Did you use a squirt bottle or paint brush, etc.?

Hi! Thanks for watching! For the multi colour look I crumpled the towel and laid it in a shallow backing dish. And then poured different colours of watered down Chalk Paint over different areas. Hope that makes sense!

Thank you so much, I need help, what is good to use to seal the paint after painting. I paint my second piece of furniture and I think I mess up, after applying my white chalk pain, I used for seal the shellac and i notice left a yellow color on the white. The can said clear, so I thought was ok. What can I use to seal the paint?
@DIYDEANNA
@DIYDEANNA 3 года назад
Thanks for watching! I usually use clear wax to seal my chalk paint. Because shellac is a yellow colour already that might be why it made you white look yellow.

Thanks for watching! I have never tried the chalk paint dying method in this video on velvet before, I tend to stick to cotton and linen because they are natural and absorb the pigments well.

I tried this with a similar color chalk paint from Michaels, not Annie Sloan, and when I hung it on the fence to dry, it got streaks and dark spots that were not there when I dyed it. Like it ran and pooled. I did squeeze it out well so I'm not sure what happened. I made the recipe using 1 liter of water and 1 tablespoon of paint. I have them drying flat now outside in the sun. It was just some old work shirts to test it out on , but I'd appreciate if someone could tell me what I did wrong, so I can learn from it.

On another site, the person mentioned mixing fabric softener with paint for fabric. I tried this and it worked well. I didn't even use fancy chalk paint, I used regular matte latex. I don't have the link but search fabric softener paint and it will be there.
@DIYDEANNA

Thanks for sharing your tip. Did the colour hold when you washed the fabrics? I still have the towels I dyed in this video with chalk paint and the colour has not faded! I was pleasantly surprised by this, I use the towels regularly in my kitchen. I machine wash in warm water, tumble dry a couple times a month. I hope you’ve had the same results.

@@DIYDEANNA I used mine for recovering furniture and serving as the bottom of a repurposed tray. I tried a few different fabrics, mainly to see if they crack when they dry. They do not. I am not sure about the washing part.

If dying back chalk paint, to get a better effect, can you use black cotton fabric?
@DIYDEANNA
@DIYDEANNA 3 года назад
I have not tried dying black cotton fabric with chalk paint so I do not know but it is an interesting idea. I think if your fabric is very dark black it may not work very well, you might not see a difference but it your fabric is dark grey and you use black paint maybe it would work ok. Sorry, I don't know for sure but I am intrigued by your question.

Hi Deanna, does it need any Dye Fixative ?
@DIYDEANNA
@DIYDEANNA 2 года назад
I have never used dye fixative with this method. I allow to air dry and then iron on warm or throw in the dryer to heat set. There was a little bit of colour loss in the first wash which is "normal" for this method. I use these towels in my kitchen and they are washed about once a month and so far the colour is holding. The look is much softer than a synthetic dye but I love the look. Hope this helps!

Deanna, I am thinking of using a off-white chalk paint on existing pillow covers I just made. The white on my pillow covers are too contrasting with the navy blue and I want to soften the color up so I it will go better with my beige couch. how would I do this process? Sending picture of my pillow cases. Lol how do I send pics?

Hi Gigi, you can follow the same steps in this video to "dye" your white pillows off white. As long as they are a natural fabric like cotton or linen it should work. This process never comes out perfectly even so you many notice a little variation, this would be subtle with off white on white but I just wanted to mention that. You can send me photos via Instagram if you've got an account @diydeanna

Can you die black and write on the fabric with chalk?
@DIYDEANNA

Yes you can use these colours, if your fabric is white the white chalk paint may not change the colour very much and I think the black might turn out to be a dark grey on the white, I hope that makes sense. Thanks for your question.

Can I dye clothing with this technique?
@DIYDEANNA
@DIYDEANNA 4 года назад
Hey! I haven’t done any clothing yet so not sure how the colour would hold up over many washes versus a traditional fabric dye. But I’ve done tea towels and canvas tote bags which I’ve washed a few times and dried in the dryer and the colour is staying! The process would be the same as in this video, it feels a little crunchy before you wash the item so if I were doing clothing I would make sure I washed the item at least once to soften it up and rinse out any excess paint. If you try it let me know how it goes! Thanks for watching!
