I found a fresh downed birch log and I was able to harvest the inner bark, so I'm going to try this! The fresh inner bark is a beautiful orangey purple colour. We also got some large pieces of white bark to use for crafts, maybe a basket.

Sounds great! Fingers crossed for great colours - keep me posted! :)

@@WildcraftDyeing Sadly it didn't turn out as I hoped. The yarn is a pale sandy orange, you could maybe imagine pink if you squint really hard haha. Not sure what I did wrong. I used 400% WOF. I used wood ash to turn the pH to about 10. Unlike with yours the overnight soak didn't really bring out the colour at all. The colour came out more when I heated the water but the bath didn't seem as dark as yours. Maybe my bark is different from yours? I'm pretty sure I used the right part of the bark. Oh well it was a good experiment anyway, you can't get them all perfect the first time!

Very interesting! Thank you so much for all the indepth information. Like you, I also thought you could dye with the outerbark, so I am glad you warned me before I tried!

Awesome to hear I could help! I’be also found the inner/outer bark descriptions pretty confusing so tried to make it clear which part you want to use.

This is so cool! I'm glad I found your channel. Have you tested if the pink is very lightfast?

Great question! I did not this year (but should have). I did light tests on lupine, carrot tips and foxglove. But I should do the birch bark as well! Definitely out of bright sunshine, the pinks have remained.

Love this information….but would love to understand what the washing soda actually does in the process.

Totally fair! It boosts the pH which for the birch bark brings out those lovely pink tones. Good catch. :)

VERY pretty and subtle... have you tried in on plant fiber?

Great question - no, I don’t know that I’ll expand into plant fiber because I really love working with wool but I am thinking about expanding to try out some different mordants (but not chrome because it hurts frogs and fish). Feel free to post if you find another channel focusing on plant fibers, I would love to help direct people so they can find the videos that match their creative needs.

But I would suspect the colours might be a little paler with plant fiber.
