Thank you so much! No more noxious chemicals for my poor system and my stove's window when this works as well, and possibly better! On a broader base, ashes, the Ajax/Comet of yore? I wonder how many seniors are chuckling about this wonderful 'new' discovery : )

I will try this. The Rutland glass cleaner I’ve used up until now is expensive and I think it has micro plastics in it as abrasives to scrape the dirt off. So, your method is kinder on the environment too. Thanks for sharing this.

I've owned a wood burning stove which has been used infrequently for 25 years. The glass had never been cleaned and it had become almost impossible see anything through it. I couldn't believe how well your method worked - the glass is as good as new. So, any methods for removing 25 years of wear & tear off my face?

This is fantastic! Thank you so much! I bought a can of cleaner and scrubbed for hours and it did almost nothing. Just tried this and the glass is spotless after about 20 minutes. I didn’t believe you at first so I tried a corner gently to see if it scratched the glass. There are no scratches and the window is perfectly clear. Thank you!

Actually the wood ash is high in potassium hydroxide and some sodium hydroxide. It's chemically found in oven cleaner. The concentrations in the ash are simply less.

Thanks Mark - short 'n sweet and well explained. If only all RU-vid vid's were like this! Your method worked okay for me, although not quite as well as it did for you. I put this down to the fact that my rough ol' mits aren't nearly as lovely as your hands and I don't have the same gentle, smooth up and down rhythmic action as you. Oh, and I wasn't wearing any nail varnish; I'll have to pinch some from my Mrs. next time. Doubtless, it's little details like these that make all the difference! ;-)

Works well even with kitchen paper/water and ashes. The old school way was with newspaper. I think there may be a bit of a chemical reaction going on too if you leave the wet ash on for a few moments. I also use a single-sided razor blade for the really stubborn bits.
@insalinity5558
@insalinity5558 3 года назад
Assuming you are burning wood logs, this is easily the least effort and least mess method for cleaning the glass on a wood burner. Forget the oven cleaners etc they are a nightmare in the clean up and utterly pointless. This method works best if the ash and glass is still a little warm from a fire the night before. Took me 15 minutes to completely clean the pitch black glass on a 90 cm wide glass door - it hadn't been cleaned for 3 years before that. A couple of small stubborn spots I removed with a glass razor blade scraper. No scratches. The cleaning does not rely on elbow grease and effort. It's a chemical clean in that the ash is caustic when combined with the damp cloth, that is enough to soften the built up tar on the glass so that it wipes away. Wood ash contains potassium carbonate and potassium hydroxide which react easily with water to release hydroxide ions and raise the pH level of the paste to make it alkaline. If you have sensitive skin make sure to wear gloves as this combination is known to cause mild skin burns for those that are prone to that kind of thing. No need to push hard, just patient wiping in circular motion.

fantastic! I tried [1] shaving foam (works great on ceramic hob glass), then [2] window cleaning fluid. Both to no effect. Then tried this method: damp cloth + little amount of ash. Voila! as new.
