Take your jazz chops to the next level: book a call with Marc
nextlevel.jazzguitarlessons.net/ How to Easily Learn Jazz Guitar Licks - Avoid this Mistake! - Memorize Guitar Licks Effortlessly
In this short video lesson, I'll show you precisely how to learn jazz guitar licks. We'll also cover a typical "beginner mistake" which is to have a (sort of) one track mind when it comes to getting guitar licks together, in a jazz context.
Jazz improvisation and soloing cannot strictly consist of plug-and-play licks that we rehearsed and simply fall back on with a formula.
Doesn't work quite like that in the real world. Believe me, I've tried. :-)
You see, the main purpose of learning licks is to gain more jazz vocabulary. Yes, of course, we have to learn jazz guitar scales, arpeggios, guide-tones, jazz transcriptions, work on comping (and everything in between) ...
... but building vocabulary with jazz guitar licks, in the end, means finding many interesting contexts for the same melodic line, during improvisation.
Language analogy once again: when you are learning a lick, it's like learning a word. And a single word of language (a solo line) has applications in countless sentences and paragraphs and books (your jazz solo!)
So, watch and share this video... and stop making the rookie mistake of ONE LICK = ONE CHORD TO PLUG IT ON.
Instead, find at least 4-5 different uses for the same lick, whenever you're learning a new jazz guitar lick.
Talk soon. Thanks! :-)

I'm a bluegrass musician but i always watch your videos because you always have some good philosophical approach to every problem or question. You're like a psychologist of music! Thanks for being like this!

That jeopardy analogy is some deep thoughts. I looped this lick over Cmaj7 - Gm7 - Fmaj7 - Cmaj7.... nice

I feel this is more about applying licks to different scales, than how to easily learn them. To master this, you must have knowledge of music theory at a level where I don't think a practitioner have problems learning licks to begin with. That said, I do appreciate your videos. Thank you.

On the contrary, I rather learn Music Theory and Chord Structure and understand WHY it Works rather than wasting memory space without thinking. It works the same way with all knowledge.

I was definitely one of those hooked on learning licks. I stopped. But what I find interesting in your video is the importance of hearing the lick in your head, or being able to sing or hum it as you did. When you can hold a musical phrase you can focus on timing / rhythm / groove.

By the way, what's that lick you play at the beginning and end of all your videos? It's nice.

Dude, C Major, same notes as F Lydian. F Major has different notes. I know you know but just put a note.
