As I was watching this, I noticed how close you put your coffee mug to the acid bath. Also, you got pretty careless during the straining stage, by not wearing your goggles or gloves. This could have turned out like a Three Stooges episode. :/
I love that you guys are having so much fun doing this together - that's more precious than the gold to reclaimed. Next time take your spray bottle and wet your filter before you start pouring. It works better.
That is amazing to think of all the old phones and computers I have thrown away over the years not knowing there was treasure in that junk! Thanks for showing me the way!
Many years ago I worked for a company that made circuit boards and the amount of gold used to plate contacts is very very small - around the equivalent of one ounce per square yard so I am not surprised at the low yield. Regarding alternative methods of getting the contacts off of the circuit boards - if you melt them off you need to find a way of removing the copper and nickel from the gold. Typically the gold layer is about 1 to 1,5 microns thick (that's 1 to 1.5 thousandths of a millimetre) the nickel is 4 to 5 microns and the copper is normally about 35 microns thick. The dissolving method is the best way to remove the copper and nickel to leave just the gold as melting the contacts first would produce a gold/nickel/copper alloy which is much harder to separate.
That's so cool LifeBuzzN. Loved your videos, most informative and educated I've seen on the subject. Thanks, hope to watch a lot more of your other types videos soon too.
