This method works well on lots of engines but I would not recommend it for those small Chinese 2-cycle generators which can be bought cheaply on Ebay and elsewhere. The problem is the flywheel magnets are only adequate at best, and I have found that if you use a method which involves mechanical shock to remove the flywheel it weakens the magnets and this usually results in a weaker spark which makes the generator harder to start or sometimes almost impossible. Best bet is to use a puller and avoid any method that involves hitting the crankshaft.

I have no money so I used the installed nut to do this. It worked and managed to not damage the nut so far. I will buy a tooling nut eventually.

Awesome!! I find in most cases when a flywheel puller is needed, You can do the same after snugging it up!! Just give the Flywheel puller a good wack or 2 on the end & the flywheel will usually pop off also!!! This works good on pulleys or most things you would need a puller 4!! Thanks 4 Sharing Bud!!

Some flywheel pullers such as mine actually don't thread on rather they just slide on the shaft, however to avoid damaging the shaft the inside is made of brass but the outside is tool steel

There's a surprise, a Tecumseh with a broken connecting rod. Thanks for the video Don
@kelceygerman1400

I had connecting rods come loose on 2 riding mowers because I would tip them on their sides to change the blades, thus hydraulicing the piston when starting them, because I didn't drain the oil 1st. I learned a lot about small engines due to my mistakes, so I never repeat the same mistake, always make new ones:)

I threaded the nut back on and whacked it a few times, flywheel popped loose like it wanted to. Works a treat.

Two 5/8 inch nuts stacked pretty much the same thing. Just wonder if you could find same thread on some lug nuts. Always used puller or slide hammer myself, but very neat trick. Thx

Ive always stacked flywheel nuts or used one and taped gently but that's a good point I'm sure there's vehicles out there that have a 5/8 nut that'll work but the tools so cheap you might as well purchase it

how about a vid on the output of the voltage of the various alternators and how to check the alternator for a/c and d/c? I have an unregulated 3 amp alternator on a b&s 13.5 engine. Just an idea for your great channel.

I really appreciate your videos since I am just learning about small engines. I have a general questions about flywheels that I feel a little foolish asking. My ignition system has no spark on my Briggs and Stratton engine. I have replaced the kill wire and checked the coil with a multimeter as I saw in another video and it has a charge so I decided to check the flywheel. I am having trouble getting it off even with the correct puller, BUT my question is about the magnets. My instruction manual says there two and there is a thicker portion on each side of the flywheel that appear to have magnets. Only one of those areas will attract a screwdriver. I was told by a dealer that the magnets are all on one side, not in two areas. Please tell me if both areas should have a magnetic pull or if it should be on one side only. Thanks

Have you ever had someone ask if their older Tecumseh snowblower could be retrofitted with heated hand grips and a headlight? Is it even possible? If you had enough parts engines around to do so, it would make for an awesome video!

What size was that flywheel nut you removed? I've got an Ariens with a Briggs snow series engine. Can't quite get my digital calipers on it but it's in the ballpark of 30mm, or imperial equivalent. Anyone know exactly what that would be?

I pulled the flywheel off to replace the coil (thanks for both videos)... after putting the flywheel back on, the pull string won't catch. Any thoughts?

This did not work for me. The engine (for a snowblower) is still attached to the chassis. Does that matter? I whacked it three times, twice but the flywheel is still tight. Any advice? I really need to change it since the teeth got chewed up when the starter gear teeth broke. I have a replacement on order. Anyway, I went out to see if I could remove the flywheel. I used a 6" long Craftsman 1/2" socket extension. I had to try it four times (three whacks each time) but it came off. I wish I had not paid for the tool now. So now, how do you get the flywheel back on snugly? My thoughts are to put three or four washers on the shaft, then flywheel nut and use the nut to push against the washers until it's tight.

Is there any alignment or timing required when replacing the flywheel, or is there a key on the shaft that eliminates it?

Is this an engine you are going to take apart? It would be interesting to see, if hitting it with a hammer has made marks in the main bearing races of the crankshaft.

Excellent video and tip, but I have a question: 1) would penetrating oil sprayed on the shaft/flywheel make it come apart easier? And 2) Will you damage the flywheel if you tap it from the back (rotating it after every tap so as to try and loosen it evenly).
@georgekeats1478
@georgekeats1478 8 лет назад
+Jesse Crandle I'm not an expert but flywheel tapers are not supposed to be lubricated. As for taping every so often...its best to use a flywheel puller or the tool Dony suggests.

I'm working on a 1968 Evinrude 18hp I took apart the carb to clean it. I unscrewed the lean rich adjustment and was wondering how many turns would be a good starting point so I don't get miss fires from too lean. Its a great old engine with 135 on both cylinders and everything works any help with carb settings would be really helpful. My brother suggested your channel for tips and I told him I was already subbed. I enjoy the vids they are really well done.
@georgekeats1478
@georgekeats1478 8 лет назад
+alnbaba seat both screws gently...turn them in until they just stop turning. Back them out 1.0 to 1.5 turns and you will be able to start the engine and the settings can be fine adjusted from there. If you are working on old OMC outboards check out "leeroysramblings.com" or if you prefer a book check out "Cheap Outboards" by Stan Wawrzyniak III. I have a copy out from my local library right now. I have a '57 18hp Johnson and a '58 18hp Evinrude that I intend to get running for the first time in 20 years this winter. I also recently purchased a '53 15hp Super Fastwin that is in pieces and hasn't been run for a few years. Have fun. Its a great outboard.
@alnbaba
@alnbaba 8 лет назад
Thanks for the tip, it's a later version and only has the speed adjustment. They are great motors and parts are still widely available. I had it running just had an issue getting it idle nicely. It was sucking a bit of air in a fuel line and the adjustment screw wasn't staying put. It's idling nice now and it throttles up quick.
