Although I didn't catch this video until much later, I did enjoy learning how to make these signs from old (or new) advertising. I've got a few advertisements from old magazines already and now I know what to do with them. It makes me want to look for some more. It did get me to thinking that shrinking these down to doll house or model trian size would be easily accomplished. Plus, I live in a city located on old Route 66 that has a rich history of such signs painted on nearly everything from brick walls, to barn roofs, to a historic water tower shaped like a catsup bottle. People would love to see reproductions of those on display in regular size as well as in miniature. Thanks for sharing this craft with us!

Oh my, this brings back memories from long past. I taught elementary Industrial Arts back in the early 1970's and we modge podged pictures with the kids. Used a wood backing, routered the edges and it was a very popular activity. Thanks for the video.

Cool projects! Tip for making paper goods look aged - coffee or strong brewed tea works good. I understand you didn't know there was different sheens in the mod podge. Typically old signs have no sheen unless they're the old porcelain signs. I like the idea to use sheet metal. But I think I'll try contact cement for sticking the signs down - I have an extra can I have to use up any ways. Thanks for the informative step by step!

My Dad owned a Mobile station in the late 50s early 60s. He had tons of advertising signs from the flying red Mobile horse to Coca-Cola signs. We had a big red Coca-Cola machine that held the old green coke bottles. I believe they were a quarter for a bottle. Lots of old oil can signs and vintage candy signs (new ar the time of course). Sure wish I had them now at 67 yrs old. Oh, the memories.

I did similar 30 years back on old dressers. Clean off the wax and lay down some stain , streaking to desire...and then a sealer. Now days they call it stressed furniture who knew...

I love your creations. I would sure like to see that 3D sign lit up. I do a lot of artwork myself and make vintage signs in photoshop, have them printed and mount them on 24 ga steel in much the same manner, but I do use a mix of gloss and semi gloss clear spray for the top finish. I have also done a lot of football, rugby and wresting signs, logos and T-shirt designs for various clubs, (all free of charge). As a died in the wool hot rodder and car builder, I have done many vintage auto signs for myself.

Howdy neighbor! 🤠I don’t really say “howdy” btw. 😆 I'm in the Texas Panhandle...East of Amarillo. 😃 I really enjoyed your tutorial! I’m eager to give it a whirl! I haven’t read any of the comments left by others, so I apologize if I repeat stuff you’ve already heard. If you’re wanting the signs to not be shiny, they make a matte finish. Or, even better, they have an Antique Matte formula. I’ve never used it so I don’t know how well it works. 🤷‍♀️ It’s crazy really how many formulas they have. Dishwasher safe, photo safe, glitter, holographic, outdoor, fabric…the list goes on and on! Have you ever tried the Antiquing Wax by Waverly you get from Walmart? It's in with all their paints in the craft paint aisle. I’ve used it on the edges of a piece of paper to make it look old. You can also add some of it to a bowl and water it down to use it all over the paper. Just let me know if you wanna hear more about that technique from me. 👍🏻 Anyway, just thought I’d pass on the info. I also wanted to comment on some of the things you spoke about in the video. I adore how you spoke about your wife! Way to go! 🙌🏻 I’d love to see how she decorates! (I’m new to your channel and not sure at the time of me typing this if you have made that video or not.) I’m still in love with the farmhouse/vintage style. I live in a 19-teens farmhouse and in an agriculture community. So it’s only natural, I guess, that I’m drawn to it. 😉 Also, I wholeheartedly agree that we’re living in the end days. If you use regular printer paper instead of card stock and soak over the top with the mod podge once it dries wet a wash cloth and wipe over and all the paper will come off leaving the ink behind.

Nice work. I have seen someone using a different technique to make old signs but one thing he did that would transfer over is, he used a small grinder and ground the edges of the rusty areas to make it jagged.

For your signs to make it look more like pitted rust use sand or coffee grounds then woo the brown paint on and use wash brown ? Thanks your signs look really great it's your signs and it's what makes you happy. If you leave your signs out side in the weather they will look aged in a matter of week's I've done that with a lot of my project's. They look like they been there for year's in reality they only been there for a few month's.

Liked; subscribed! Didn't know you could use this process on metals. So I learned something valuable, sir! I am considering doing this to the entire side of a 4-drawer file cabinet I use for garage storage, instead of trying to paint it. And I truly appreciate the ability to make something custom-designed and unique, even if it doesn't necessarily save money. Here, you've made several signs for the price of a single one that you could buy. And that makes this a REAL successful endeavor. I definitely will be looking for this in your videos, but if you haven't made it yet, you should do a video on that car stereo installed in the cabinet that I spied on the way into the man-cave / she-shed lobby. If that is functioning, I think that's a pretty cool idea (I started a similar boombox and I have yet to finish it).

I enjoy making signs myself and to make them look like they have rust, I use craft (Matt finish) paint in a nutmeg color and also sprinkle a bit of cinnamon let it dry .Yes the spice right from the cabinet🤭. Of course it doesn't return inside..Wipe off the excess that doesn't stick to the wet paint .. I would love to see the the great things your wife has done that you so kindly talked about in your video Thanks for sharing your signs and conversation. From NC.

I love these! Thank you for showing how you make them. There are silicone makeup "brushes" that are really good for not leaving stroke marks, and they're simple to clean. You can usually find them for a dollar or so. Dollar Tree usually has them, or they can be ordered online inexpensively. Or if you want to something that covers a larger surface, a silicone spatula/scraper would work.

Such a simple process but effective. Thanks for sharing.

The flat mod podge will give you a more vintage look when dry. Awesome work.

I just found your video, or it found me. Great job. For your cover coat you can add some stain to the mode podge when you want to get that antique color th the whites. Again great job at letting yourself come through. Have you taken public speaking classes? And your wife's job sounds cool.

Love your video... I wanted to give you a tip on your metal sign making. First off, I am a fellow Okie myself, born and raised in Shawnee, Oklahoma. My family and son still live in OK. I remarried and now live in Michigan. But enough about me. I am a very active crafter and do use mod podge a lot. And I'm one of those people that does not care for the brush stroke look so I have tried some things and what I came up with is texture. Adding a little texture using the mod podge as a texturing as well will eliminate the brush stroke look. So ... this is what I do, I brush on the mod podge as usual then once its all covered like I want, I take a Bounty paper towel (bounty has little bumps which I like) I then lay one flat over my project, touch it slightly and pick it up. Repeat all over the area till it's done. Let your product dry and your project will look like you added texture to it instead of brush strokes showing. Just a tip if you wanna try that. I do all sorts of crafts, one of which are light switch covers where I use this technique with all the time and it goes well against on the wall when they are installed. I would have sanded the Gálvez away in the corners and left it outside to rust fora few days then sand the excess rust off gently.

Also try coffee for staining.

Thanks for the vid! Neat stuff. Something to consider... instead of trimming the border off the paper print, just stick it down to your metal as usual then trim out with your snips all in one shot. That way you can bypass the alignment step and trimming the project twice.
