I thought I disliked jackfruit until I tried it again in the tropics. I realized fresh jackfruit tastes nothing like canned jackfruit. Wow, what a huge difference!!! Jackfruit convert right here!

Your video is what made me try jackfruit. I bought one about 4 years ago and I loved it. Put all that I couldn't eat which was a lot, into Tupperware and it lasted about a week, shared it at work with everyone. They had never heard of it.I loved it.

I planted a jackfruit in my yard here in Mexico a couple years ago. This summer while I was in Canada the tree produced two giant jackfruits and I wasn't here to experience them. Bummer. But right now there is a huge one just begging me to pick it! But I have no idea if it's ripe & ready to be picked yet. That's why I'm here. But after watching this video I still don't know..unless I wait for it to fall off. But then maybe my chickens will eat it! So off I go in search of clues. This video made me hungry for fresh Yucca! (as they call jackfruit here) Thanks for the video. :)

@arnoelful
@arnoelful 10 лет назад
When it is ripe you can smell it from like 50m away or more. You do not need to wait for it to fall off the tree... Some varieties are soft and will squash if they are allowed to over-ripe and fall off the tree.

I found some at an Indian supermarket in NYC - it cost $2 per pound, so they cut and sell it as 1/2 or 1/4 - it takes work, is somewhat sticky to cut it up but it is delicious, sweet and somewhat unusual taste - its where juicy fruit gum originally got its flavor

Durian - A very exotic and flavorful fruit. This fruit was found in south eastern Asia, somewhere in Thailand. This fruit is different from the Jack because it has a more bitter taste, hard and moist texture, and has hard to peel, rough and spikey skin. Jackfruit - A very smooth, lightweight fruit, with a bite similar to a mango. This, too was found in south eastern Asia, but in the western part of India. This fruit is cherished among Indains.The skin is flat, thin and edible

Hey John! Keep on growing those seeds. I believe they bare fruit in only two to three years! Although they do get big, I believe they will produce fruit even when relatively small. So maybe you could grow some yourself after all!

Looks delish. I recently tried durian and really like it. Strong but not unpleasant smell. Mild and surprising taste, I thought. Smell was definitely stronger than flavor. I'll now be on the look out for jackfruit. I love Juicy Fruit gum but never knew where the flavor came from. Thanks, John!

Those individual orange pods are called ARILS, and they are wonderfully delicious. I boiled some of the seeds and found them edible but not particularly tasty. There must be some way to make them taste good. Durians are similar looking but very different on the inside. The flesh is creamy and really delicious and sweet, but it smells like rotten onions.

use any edible vegetable oil on your hands / fingers, in sufficient amount before you open the fruit or you will have a mess. If you can wait open only a very ripe one, if you can tell. the best ones are some times splitting or cracking open on their own as they ripen. the seeds can be cooked after these are dried or as additives in a stew, or in fish or chicken dishes, as you would small red potatoes, these are very edible, Excellent posting. I have been able to get these even in the mid west grocery stores. Thank you

I would describe that rather dry yellow fruit similar to foam like pineapple without the acid, like a hundred different light tropical fruits in one. (maybe that's why its called a Jack fruit... like jack of all fruits er i mean trades) also its similar to how an orange has that white kinda bitter fiber in the middle and in between chunks.

Jackfruit is ripe if the cells you eat are almost orange or dark yellow. The lighter the yellow color the less ripe the fruit is. For hand eating like this guy is doing, the fruit should almost be orange or at least dark yellow. Some Asian deserts use the fruit that is less ripe because they don't want the pieces to fall apart and are lighter in color and are a little more chewy.
