Read all about the Rambutan here on my website: inthekitchenwi...
In this episode of In the Kitchen with Matt, I will show you how to eat the Rambutan fruit. What does a rambutan taste like? I will answer that question with a taste test. It has been over 20 years since I last ate rambutan. It was my second favorite fruit behind the mango when I was living in the Philippines. They are quite interesting looking red with hair-like spindles all over them, kind of like a sweet gum ball tree here in the United States or also kind of like a sea urchin. Rambutans are very tasty, sweet, with a thick flesh that covers a seed. It is watery and is kind of like a grape if the grape was bigger a surrounding a pit. They are definitely worth trying!
Where does rambutan come from?
They come from South East Asia and are native to the Indonesian Archipelago. They are cultivated all over the world in the tropics, like Africa, the Philippines, Costa Rica, etc. You can eat them fresh or use them in jams and jellies. They are typically red but also come in green and yellow varieties.
What are the health benefits of the rambutan fruit?
They are rich in antioxidants.
Hich in Vitamin C
Promote healthy digestion
Low in calories
Rich in fiber

My very good friend had these on offer at a birthday party a couple of years ago. I live in a pretty diverse area, so these are easy to find whether in Asian markets, specialty markets, or even in some of our big box grocery stores. He called them Dragon's eyes, and true to that name, if you just split them straight through with the pit, they do in fact kind of look like what you imagine a dragon's eye to look like. I just finished introducing these to my parents who enjoyed them. Such is the beauty of food to be able to share your experiences with others, and have them pass that experience on to others.

You are welcome!! Yeah when I was in the Philippines that is how we ate it, by squeezing it with our hands. However a lot of times they can be hard and people with weaker hands have a hard time squeezing it until it cracks. I have noticed that the imported fruit we get here seems to be harder than when I was in the Philippines. But still able to open it with your hands. A knife is so much easier for people with weaker hands though.

Thanks, Matt. I picked up some from my Costco. Thankfully, I live near a Costco with a diverse Asian community. So via Costco, I was introduced to Jack fruit and fish skins.

You are welcome! You are the second person that I heard found these at Costco. I haven't seen them at my Costco. So I always have to go to my local Asian market to find them, which I don't mind going to, because there is so much good stuff there that they don't have at my supermarket.

Hi, Matt. That's true, all Costco's don't carry certain items. They tend to cater to the community. So if you go to a Costco in a large Asian community, you may find products from Asia. My Costco has a lot of products from China. About a year ago, I started seeing more products from Japan.

I've had these before! They're so good, but another way to eat them is to first, find a little crease, or line. Kinda like a peach, and you can cut a little bit on the line till you get through the skin. Then you can just pop it open!

I just started seeing them at my local market. I bought two small ones, $3.99 per pounds, about 23 cents a piece for these two small ones. Good, interesting, but not as sweet as I expected. Could be due to shipping from Asia to San Antonio Texas. But I enjoy tasting new things also, especially fruits and veggies. Last year I tried Fresh Jack Fruit for the first time.....love it fresh....yes tastes like juicy fruit chewing gum. I haven't tried cooking it yet. When our market first started selling it, they had the giant jack fruit cut into smaller portions for those of us living alone and I enjoyed it every time I could get a smaller portion. Now, they only sell the full giant ones and way to much for me to handle or to eat. I just found your video by searching rambutan......I am looking forward to to seeing more of your videos. :-) Thanks for sharing your info with us. :-)

Been eating rambutans for years, but i still watched your video to see if I missed out any information on how to eat it. Luckily, I didn’t. 😀 Been breaking the outer side of the fruit using my fingers only since i first started eating this while i was still a kid. But this week, i decided to start using a knife. I didn’t know why I haven’t thought of doing that before. 😂 I was enjoying eating rambutans while watching your video. ☺️
