I am having the hardest time getting my Pawpaw seeds to take root. What do I need to do. The one tree i got to grow died when i transplanted it. I was so careful not to disturb the tap root. Any suggestions would be awesome. TIA

Janet LaRue One thing is to never let the seeds dry out. They should be started in deep pots or directly planted in the ground where you want the tree. Seedlings are sensitive to direct sunlight in the first yr and be sure they get enough water. To add to B uppys comment the seeds need to undergo whats called stratification. To do that you just put the seeds in a ziplick bag with moist peat moss and set them in the fridge for atleast 100 days. Plant them in the spring and you should see some sprouts about July/August. They can take a while to germinate. The first 2 yrs they dont grow much but the 3rd yr they really take off.

@@nkynative2850 Since they grow in southern Michigan do you think they might grow in southern Wisconsin? Do they like real sunny spots, or partly shady spots to grow in? I wonder if they would grow on a more protected south side of a building?

KweKanata there is a rumour that someone in North York (Toronto area) has been growing them with success for a number of years. That is giving me hope that i can produce them in southern Ontario.

Wow, that is fantastic, but Atlantic provinces have a different growing environment so I’d still have to experiment. It would be a welcomed adventure🙂

@@tinahartley6692 Tina, no system works, or can work apart from man being moral. The problem with socialism and communism is that you put your power as individuals into the hands of a very few. Those few, if they weren't corrupt, which likely they are, for they are power grabbing, eventually the great to absolute power over the masses will corrupt them. Man is wicked, apart from a loving, accountable relationship with His Creator. No system can work without moral people, both in governmental capacities and as citizens, but between capitalism and communism, communism is much more dangerous. Millions and millions of people were killed in the last century under communism. Check out recent history. They come in with great, alluring promises, but death is in their wake. Communism cannot work. It is against human nature. Would you get up every day and do your best and work your hardest, if everything you worked for was going to be divided up with others, who had no motivation or incentive? Would people be inventive and come up with marvelous ideas for products, if they were never rewarded for them? If you give away your freedom than you deserve to become a slave.

How do you separate the fruit from the seeds?

@@brendacraine4948 I use my fingernails to remove the membrane around the seeds. It's messy but worth it

Do they mind being in an area that occasionally floods over?

I'm told they will ripen after they are picked.

As long as they are full grown, they will continue to ripen after being picked.

PIECE of PEACE Homestead I save pawpaw seeds every year in moistened pear moss in the refrigerator until spring. I then plant them in the spring. Remember that if a pawpaw seed dries out the viability of that seed drops by 90%, so don’t let it dry out. Good luck.

Andy Eddings Don’t put them in the freezer either. It kills the seed. Seedlings need about 35% to 50% shade for the first 3 years or the sun can kill them. They need consistent watering, too.

Thought about it, I will if I get around to it. It's important to never let them dry out and so far I have zero saved up. The season just started. How many are you looking for? I'm not sure about the success rate of the seeds but I've read it's pretty good when kept moist and refrigerated for a few months or immediately planting them deep..

@@Anamericanhomestead lmao! Well I would pay you for them. Also depends how far you are from subiaco. My husband and I want to try them. I do remember when riding my horses when I was a teenager we saw these trees in the woods but had no idea we could eat these, we don't live around there anymore and it's private property now so can't go and get some. Plus that was 20 yrs ago I probably wouldn't remember exactly where they were lmao

@@christinarice1722 LOL ok. Well I'm a bit of drive. I'm in Witter, AR. Just keep an eye out in creek areas as trees near water are more likely to produce fruit. Locate a patch around July and August and expect fruit to start falling around Sept to Oct. Just look for those big leaves and then you've found your patch. There are usually more than a few trees clumped together.

I remember the part about picking up pawpaws and putting them in your pocket. I must of heard it many years ago.

They can grow in zones 5-8 depending on how much water they get.

I'm gonna have to try that.
