I have a great tip, It is common for crab-apple trees or similar trees (Hawthorne trees) that drop berries on the grass is to make your rock bed or mulch bed expand out around most of the tree canopy so the berries don't fall on the grass and instead fall on the rock or mulch bed. I have found that the thousands of berries or small apples that drop on the lawn every year will either thin-out or smother and kill the grass underneath the sitting berries/apples. The berries have to fall somewhere, better to fall away from the grass to not damage it.

Considere getting rid of your Hawthornes. They are considered an invasive tree.

I guess it depends on your area but I find it to be the easiest to do something like this after a good rain. The soil is soft and easiest to work with.
@TheLawnWhisperer
@TheLawnWhisperer 5 месяцев назад
Oh for sure! Only issue with doing it after rain is the mud has a tendency to stick to the half moon edger or shovel. But easier yes

I was just about to cut edges into the beds but hesitant because I’m concerned that the edge will dry out over time because of exposure. What say you?

Last year I followed your crispy edges directions for the new beds at our house. I used the half moon edger which resulted in great looking edges. I’ve had grass grow through the mulch and start rooting in the bed over the winter. I’m going to get a triangular shaped garden hoe and run it down the edges to remove all of the roots and excess mulch. The beds definitely take at least yearly maintenance.
@EthansGarden
@EthansGarden 5 месяцев назад
Unless your wood chip mulch is very thick (at least 3 or 4 inches - thicker is even better) weeds and grass will come through. Especially perennial weeds. You can try putting down newspaper before spreading the woodchip mulch. A few sheets thick. This acts as the actual weed preventer while the woodchips are mostly decorative.
@jdunker31
@jdunker31 5 месяцев назад
@@EthansGarden I’m pretty sure that’s where I went wrong. The edge is 3 inches but I had a hard time getting the bed in front of the edge dug down further because the ground was so hard. I’ll try adding the newspaper. Thank you.

What's your solution where there's a bunch of roots near the surface?
@TheLawnWhisperer
@TheLawnWhisperer 5 месяцев назад
Along your edge or in your mulch bed?
@1carnut
@1carnut 5 месяцев назад
@@TheLawnWhispererKind of both. I have a maple tree with roots near the surface. I currently have some plastic edging going around the bed around the tree but the roots keep displacing it. I want to take it out and do the same edge that you did in this video but I know that I will be hitting roots everywhere. The only thing that I could come up with is adding a lot of dirt and then edging that. Not sure if there is a better solution. Thx.

Did you put the cardboard down on the grass before the mulch?! 🙈 we have so much grass and it’s not dry. Feels like it will take all summer to have time to shovel it out. Does the cardboard covering work?!? 🫣😰

Cardboard can work. I just sprayed some and scraped it out
