Thank you very much. Very helpful. I also discovered that you need to import the media from the card to your hard drive before importing to FCPX and its very important to "consolidate media" under the file menu before deleting those files from that location if you plan to work on the project again. Otherwise they will be missing.

lol my computer was handling the full the raw 4k videos until I went above 100GB of footage loaded in the timeline, then the footage in preview started to be choppy. Now with proxy is runs super smooth with massive amount of footage! thanks so much! saved me lots of frustration!
Great video. Very helpful. I had used iMovie and very recently jumped into FCPX. Initially I edited 1080P footage with no issues. I then tried editing 4K from Filmic Pro log v2 footage off of iPhone 11 Pro. Suddenly was experiencing constant rendering, fans spinning up and my MacBook slowing down. This was very helpful especially in regard to exporting. Thank you.

Hi ! I was wondering. If I shoot 4K but I want to crop in in some of my footage and export it in 1080p. Should I work in a 4k timeline or in a 1080 timeline but with my 4k footage ? thank you !
If you use a simple Mac Mini M1 and an external 2TB SSD you can forget all that proxy stuff, simply edit direct in the best quality and get playback in real time, the switch from my old Imac was a light in the sky. I use a QHD-32' for FCPX and a 4K-27 as the program monitor. And lets say I started editing my own videos in the era of U-Matic and Betacam and switched to NL editing in 1995 so I've been thru all the advances of technology in the last 40 years. In 95 a hard drive 2 GB cost 1200 US$, slow and hot, you could iron a shirt with it, a nightmare!
Great video bro.. Ive been editing for my channel for a year now and just recently have started experiencing a huge lag with drone footage... All my footage has always been in 4k so this took me by surprise... Anyhow your advice helped me majorly so wanted to thank you directly!
Hey Liam! Glad the video helped. Though mavic footage is 4K, it's a very low bit rate at 60mbps. When you proxy that footage it will look very fuzzy (poor quality) during the edit. If you're just editing Mavic footage you might not need to proxy it because the footage has the same file size as high quality HD video. It would save a step in your workflow, and allow you to see the original files as you edit. Enjoy your new MacBook Pro! Cheers :)
Hey Henry, are you saying no need to proxy if only editing Mavic 60mbps or if its mixed with 4K 100bit and 60bit? Forgive my genius, just trying to understand all of this and be old at the same time...
Nice video! I film weddings in 4K and then import the clips into a 1080p timeline. My Mac Mini and MacBook Pro work great using the optimized media. Maybe I’ll try making a 4K timeline and try proxy files. Would the quality be that much better for computer use or a Blu-ray (if I can even burn that to a BL?)
You should be able to have proxy and optimized media in an external location. Just change the storage location for the media BEFORE you generate proxy.
This video was quite informative. Only thing it left me wondering was why you chose "Computer" in the Format during export, and what the pros and cons are of choosing "Video & Audio" versus "Computer". Up till now I've always just done "Video & Audio". Which setting do you suggest sending clients for say, social media or RU-vid uploads? I see that both do H.264 so that doesn't need explanation. Thanks man!!
Thanks for the tips... why is not choosing the pro res 422 ideal for most social media compression uploads? Otherwise is most exporting like h264 for RU-vid etc? The compression does not look as good when viewing on a 4K screen. Especially for those using iPhones and GoPros. I’ve had better luck with a big full frame sensor when scaling or compressing video for uploads. More lens/sensor/mp = better quality on the compression upload?
The reason for not exporting Mastered (ProRes) is youtube will compress it anyway-- so an extra step in workflow and time for a result that maybe only the creator will notice a slight difference-- I have done tests and its so minor the differences I haven't looked back.
Brilliant tutorial and taught me a lot so thank you for that Henry. I do landscapes and do vlogs myself in 4k but as I am relatively new to 4k this was great, I have subscribed and would love to know how you get so many subscribers, perhaps you could do a vlog on that.
What are your thoughts on modifying the project file temporarily to 1080/720 to edit and then reverting back to 4K at completion? I really just don’t like the quality that proxy offers. Part of the fun in editing is seeing sharp video, not compressed pixelated images. Just my two cents! Nice video!
Blake I get your point, That would be investing a lot of time into a workflow that would only be temporary. If we make the right choice yours and my next computer will be fast enough to edit to edit 4K direct without proxies. The reason I wait--- is the faster I want my next mac to be! :)

do you also downscale your 4k video files down to 1080p HD to make it as sharp as possible when you upload it on youtube? if yes can you send me a screenshot of all your "downscaling settings"?

I have a 2011 17"/2.5ghz/16gbRAM/Dual Graphics 6770M and Intel 3000/1TB SSD. Can I use this device to shoot and edit 1920X1080p without taxing this device or do I need to purchase a new device? What about 4K. My end media is BluRay. I would really appreciate your information.
Hey! I use a MacBook Pro 15' from 2014. 16GB of RAM and the 1GB graphics card. I will be upgrading soon, but the new MacBook pros I'm not to fond of. I think you should upgrade computers, because more important than taxing the device-- a faster computer will render much quicker saving you time. (For HD your computer is still adequate, when you go 4K I would upgrade) hope this helps :)
Henry Ortlip Thank you. I am wrestling between a base model 2017 iMac 540 vs 575 i5. I heard fan noises are excessive on the i7. Just not sure if I should play it safe and get the base or $200 more for the slight boost. Also nervous about a redesign rumor as I look forward to the day the chin and bezels are gone or reduced and don’t want to kick myself with that and improved cores and design. But with the iMac Pro I feel they would not burn that segment with a redesign so quick and keep the old 9 year old design. Is the base model with the 4gb/540/1TB SSD still not powerful enough to edit 4K without proxy? I also hear rumors of 8k imac in the redesign. Thoughts? Gut?
