This is by far the clearest demo on why a directors intent is so important to an editor. The amount of times I used to get give an interview and some B roll and just told to stick it together actually made me stop editing for other people. I primarily shoot and I only cut for myself now days 😆

Nothing better than learning to edit as a director! Also cutting your own footage as a camera op gives you a new perspective on how to approach scene coverage 🙌

@@JoshuaKirkNZ 100% agree! I’ve been shooting and cutting my own content for 25 years. I did a few years as a full time editor and it almost made me completely change careers. Luckily we had the DSLR revolution, moved away from camcorders and I rediscovered my love of lenses and lighting

Always a good day, when Joshua Kirk uploads another video :) Love this series. It helps me a lot as a solo filmmaker.

Much appreciating your series Jushua. The downside of learning more about editing is the time it takes to make the necessary mistakes that will ultimately build experience in establishing scenes and interesting videos. I think a lot of want to make quality material but are faced with time crunches that makes it hard to set time aside and really think about what we are trying to create. I have a suggestion for your next video in this theme: How about you talk about organizing your thought process before getting in front of the computer to paint it on a timeline? Personally, I try to make as many shots as I can and end up with folder filled with clips and audio and have a rough idea of what I want to create but lack a method. it is hard to think about the entire video when you are tunnel vision on scenes put together at random, when I should think about what you talked about in this video. I try to write things down on paper when I get an idea of a direction I want to pursue but lack the mental agility to sort the material and I think it is because I don't know how to organize my pre-production.

Totally. It’s really hard to learn new things and implement them on a project while working with a tight deadline. I always try and dedicate study time outside of real projects to learn new skills, then when I’m proficient enough with that new skill I’ll use it on a project. You can learn these concepts now and apply them later.

Great video mate and lovely footage! I'm one of the shooter+editors for What Now and will absolutely be seeing how to incorporate this style of B-Roll organization in our day to day, as you could probably guess the shooting ratios are absolutely MASSIVE so it can become a problem fast!

@@JoshuaKirkNZ Hah me too, it's not live anymore unfortunately but on the plus side it does give us more opportunity to get out and shoot cool stuff :)

I'm so glad I stumbled across your channel and I'm now a dedicated Subscriber! I see you use a pen tablet in some of your editing (along with other devices). Have you done a video about using a pen tablet in your workflow? I just bought a Wacom Intuos Pro and want to use it wisely so I'm looking for tips for the set-up/mapping options with Resolve. Thanks!

These are gold, thank you for sharing Josh. Any possibility you could share your Resolve workflow for narrative work? There's tons of good stuff in your documentary editing series, but I'm curious to see how a narrative workflow would deviate. Cheers!

Great idea. To be honest it would be just be theory at the moment because I haven’t edited a scripted narrative project for a while. I’ve been in the world of doc editing for the last few years. Organisation is very similar though. You would go about creating Time of day syncs and the sub clip the timelines down into scenes or takes.

I know this stupid but can you make a breakdown for editing a montage / short content (without voiceover) for reel ? And can you share where we can find stock footage for practicing editng for beginner?

Dude! Please just male videos like this. RU-vid is full of editing software tutorials but rarely videos about editing itself.

I agree, they are both helpful but I’ll keep making videos I wish I had when I was learning at the start.
