Documentary Workflow - How to start processing Interviews in Davinci Resolve

Here is a look at one way you could begin setting up your project for a documentary workflow. There are many different workflows you can implement for documentary style edits. In this video we look at syncing your interviews using timecode, creating Multicam clips and breaking down a timeline using transcriptions.

Once again, very informative. I never thought I could actually benefit from having a method for my short videos but having someone explain why I am creating bins and how I will use this organized material somehow make things a lot clearer In my mind to develop a story about it instead of a bunch of smalls clips put together without having any goals - what is it am I editing and for what purpose which in itself is a hell of a wake up call because I don't think I ever looked at it with this angle in mind. Love these ideas! My sub clip shortcuts dont seem to be working I even dove into the settings to check or change them but they do nothing for me. Gah thanks anyway :)

The sub clip short cut only works if you have the source monitor window selected. You can create a shortcut to select that as well.

This is great. The organisation is key and very useful to compare. I, for audio editing, use Pro Tools for audio editing. I am wondering about exporting and then importing to Davinci for Pro Tools?

We use this round trip workflow a lot. You can either export stems from Davinci or use a specific AAF Pro Tools render from the render page.

This was super helpful for someone with an avid workflow, thank you!! Just with the multicam losing is original TOD timecode, will this not cause issues with the EDL/XML at the end? Do you need to “flatten” the multicam clip after pic lock like you would in Avid? Thanks🙌🏼

Once you flatten the multicam clip the original camera clip will be referenced and retain the timecode.

Thanks a bunch - well explained. I have however one question. At 2:43 you use the function "update TC from audio track". Is is, that you used an external device like a DEITY-TC01, or why is this step necessary. I got a bit lost in the procedure. Could you loose some words on that? Thx

Hey thanks for the Q. Yes I didn't explain that well. Sometimes timecode can be input using a dedicated Timecode port on a camera which automatically updates the timecode correctly in camera. For some cameras without that functionality you can input an actual audio signal from the timecode box such as a TC-1. This audio signal sounds like static, but Davinci can listen to this and convert it into timecode metadata. That's what I was doing in this case.

@@JoshuaKirkNZ Thanks for your explanation. I found also in the meantime another video from you, where you actually mention the use of the TC1. So for the TC into the camera(s) I gather that a signal enters via TC port like I have on my Canon C70 or alternatively via the audio port and then the procedure, as explained in your video. However I wonder how you convinced the audio file to carry the TC. Would you use also a TC1 on a field recorder? I know, there is on of the Zoom recorders, which has TC in. Would that be the procedure? Just to understand the global procedure? Thx for your effort. Greets from Germany

@@arnewinterboer201 Yes the audio recorder and the cameras will all need to have synced timecode. You could use 2x TC-1 for both the camera and audio device.
