How to edit in Lightroom: Mobile + Desktop

Editing is key to making your photos look their best. But it can be intimidating when you’re new to it! In this video, I’m walking you through exactly how to edit food and product photos in both the mobile and desktop versions of Lightroom, including where I place those little sliders and why.
Light adjustments, Color adjustments, how to combat uneven lighting across dark backdrops (which our eyes perceive as "glare"), and how to remove the blue tone from white objects/backdrops - we’re covering it all!

Wow! The Dehaze and Saturation color tips (saturation for removing blue on white) are killer tips! Dehaze works something like the Contrast slider, and can sometimes give you unwanted grain, as will the Contrast slider, but the subtle changes work wonders while keeping a good balance, if done correctly. Biggest tip not touched on in depth, IMHO: having a discerning eye and not overcorrecting unless that's the look you're going for. Awesome video!

Hahaha I'm really glad you enjoyed the efficiency of this video - I wanted to make something that wasn't comprehensive but would give you the quick and dirty basics to get started right away. I'm sure the course will be hugely useful for understanding the whole program, though. Especially because the organizational tools are at least one video in and of themselves!

@@jackelynjohnson8155 It's not really public. I took a DSLR class from a local photographer last summer in person and she offered a virtual Lightroom class to the graduates of her program. Besides, it's been good but I don't know that I'd actually recommend this particular class. We've gotten bogged down in various folks' computer issues on several occasions, making for an occasional semi-painful experience.

Very timely, as I had just inquired about this last week! I'm experienced with Lightroom (though I use Lightroom Classic so the interface is a little different but the principles and approaches are still the same). I just received my first Surfaces last week and had some of the same exact questions about background color cast and light spill on the dark backgrounds. It's a little more background editing work than I'm used to doing, but the results are worth it. :) One area you might get into in a future video is using the adjustment brush and gradient tool when you need to adjust the background without affecting the subjects. Thanks for these great backgrounds!

How do I take a color all the way down on MOBILE? This was covered from 9:45 to 10:11, but only shown on desktop. Thanks!

Hey! Great question, when you open a photo to edit, under the "Color" section of the main editing menu, there is a button that says "mix" in the top right of the menu that pops up. Tap that and it will bring up another menu that will allow you to manipulate each individual color like we do in the video!

In Mobile, in the "Color" section, when you tap "Mix" on the right and then tap a color (I chose Orange), there aren't any sliders to bring down the color to zero. The only sliders there are "Hue", "Saturation", and "Luminance". Nothing is there to turn a color all the way down or to turn it off. The only other button there is "Done".

@@gloryb-tv The sliders under each color are how you adjust each of the individual colors in your photos. Hue will adjust the actual color, so aqua can be more green or blue depending on which way you move the slider. Saturation is the amount of the color, so if you slide it all the way to the left on blue, you will eliminate all of the blue tones in your photo, if you slide to the right, you will over-saturate or increase the amount of blue. Luminance is the amount of white or black in the color, affecting the tonality of the color. Color adjustment can be very tricky.

It's the Saturation for that color that I need to bring all the way down to zero. Now I see the tiny word "Saturation" at 10:08 shown there. My eyes are older than the rest of me. At first I saw "Saturation" above the Color Mixer box and didn't realize they're actually "in" Saturation there. #software #tinyfonts Thank you so much! I just received my 3rd and 4th surfaces. Can't wait to try them out! I'm mostly a RU-vidr but doing more in IG and the surfaces help a lot!

I'm so glad to hear it, Gabby. Dehaze IS pretty great, let me know what you think of it. Jenson is a 2 year old cavachon (half Cavalier King Charles Spanial, half Bichon Frise) who missed his grooming sessions due to COVID! Hence, the mini-sheepdog look. What can I say, we're all a little hairy right now!

We're so glad you enjoyed the video! To make your photos look more consistent, you can copy and paste your edit settings in Lightroom and apply it to other photos, or you can create a preset!
