Hi Joseph, the paste is very easy to remove. If there should remain some paste left on the head after you removed the pickup, you can 'activate' some more product and roll it over the remains and you'll see it comes off very easliy as it gets stuck on the 'activated' stuff... I don't know if I made myself clear. You can try it out on some other surface and check it out yourself. Thanks for commenting!
A lot of people are very happy with transducers such as the one in the video (There is also the 'twin-spot' option - two of these connected to one socket - as marketed by K&K, Shadow etc.). But, unlike the more upmarket options (Fishman, Headway, Schatten etc.) that are designed and built for a specific instrument* and, in some cases, have purpose-designed active electronics to get the optimum sound*...
Saludos!
i will have to try one of those.... i bought a similar thing from a guitar shop and it was hopeless...think i was using too thick putty stuff...and it would not stick.... but i fancy another go...then i will be able to play it with my guitar effects...
Hahahaha! Un fuerte abrazo!
@DjThomazzo Hi. I tried it out in several positions, and the one I chose seemed to me the best place as regards sound and convenience. The cable attached to the pickup is not very long - like 20 cms or so - and I wanted the female jack to be as close to the tailpiece as possible. On the other hand the transducer "vibrates" more where there is less banjo head tension (like next to the neck) and that causes the paste I use to attach it to lose adherence, so that the transducer rattles....
@joshuacash Hi there, I absolutely agree with you, but sometimes a mic is not an option (for instance, onstage with a rock band) and the only solution is to use a pickup. As for the Fishman you, I've been told these are the best pickups for banjo out there. I was considering buying one in the near future, but your comment may discourage me from doing so... Thanks for commenting, mate!
*This is what the designers/manufacturers attempt or claim to do. As joshuacash's comment indicates, they may not necessarily get it right. The point is, though, that they use materials and manufacturing processes that are not easily available to the general public.
Can U make a video with the only audio from the piezo? Without the real banjo audio... So I can realize the real quality of the audio amplified. Thanks... :-)
@raulin why do you place the pickup between the tailpiece and bridge? Wouldn't it make more sense to put the pickup closer to the neck like with a guitar? btw great music!

I have a Fishman Rare Earth pickup in my banjo. Sounds like I am playing in a tin can. I hate it, always squeals and we always have a hard time trying to adjust tone and volume through the speakers. I would rather put a mic in front if it anyday.
hey! a stupid quiestion: i have just installed this piezo on my banjo according to your great video, and it's sound is quite good, i'm happy about it ;) but! if i ever want to remove this stuff from my instrument, will it be easy te remove the blue-tack-like thing from the head? i guess it will be, just calm me down with a "yes" please! :) thanks and grats!
...a piezo transducer like the one in the video is made out of a few cheap and easily obtainable components and, with some basic soldering skills, you could make one yourself for under £10.
hahaha! It was mid-summer in Seville when I shot this vid ... 110º in the shade... I was right back from the swimming pool, so it's strange I was wearing my shirt too! Thanks for commenting!
Thanks for commenting. I've had to replace it only a couple of times since I put up this video more than 5 years ago. I think that it all may depend on the position of the transducer - too much vibration will make it come off earlier - and the amount of stuff used (only a bit is enough a to cover the transducer plate with a thin layer, and too much stuff will make it go off earlier). Also, I loop the lead once or twice around the coordinator rods to avoid too much tension on the lead which will inevitably lead (pun intended) to the transducer to come off.
