-cotton clothesline fabric
-fabric strips in colour of choice
-Rit dye if you want to dye your rope
-Different coloured thread to use in your bobbin to add accents of colour
-Sharpie pens in your colour of choice
-Stencils of choice
-Acrylic paints and stiff angled brush
-Fabric paints if desired
-Design patterns from the internet if you want some more ideas
-DMC embroidery cottons in colour of choice

-embroidery needle
-large eyed darning needle
-sewing/knitting gauge

-pet slicker brush or comb to brush out macrame tassels
-1 yd/m of 100% mercerized crochet cotton

I used sharpie markers and made ovals and circles in blue and yellow to complement my dishes on my rope trivets. I then added drops of rubbing alcohol which dispersed the color softening the edges of the color spots. They turned out beautiful.

Thank you so much Patti, great ideas that I will be putting to use. I love the fringe and the method you used, that looks amazing! I loved the tip of wrapping the thread around, underneath the bead. My Mother taught me that many, many years ago and I had forgotten it! And how sweet, your thimble - it seems like you inherited your grandmother’s sweet demeanor, it comes through on your videos…. I have not done any of those as yet but a viewer of mine has. You can do machine embroidery or fabric paint designs with stencils.

Hi Patti, your tutorials are truly amazing. Thank you so much for explaining things clearly and thoroughly. I'm having trouble keeping the sides of my baskets straight, they always taper outwards, even though I'm angling the basket forward (to the right) like you show in your videos, and lifting it up. I'm so lost, I don't know what I'm doing wrong.

When you are ready to form your sides bring your base right up to the head of your sewing machine. Sew a couple of rounds. To aid in forming your sides you can lift the basket slightly off the bed of the machine with your left hand for a couple rounds. When you are assured that you are now forming your sides than let your basket rest on the bed of the machine again. To continue to form straight sides make sure you are always holding your basket at a 90 degree angle to the bed of the sewing machine. Be consistent and don’t change the angle. Continue to sew your sides holding the angle with your left hand and using your right fingers to keep the rows that you are sewing flat against the bed of the machine. Practice makes perfect!

Patti - I love the embellishments. I have made a couple of medium baskets. I want to make your large basket and use the thread color to embellish. First question: what stitch length should I use to get the best color? I want an Ombre effect using 5 shades of yellow. I need help figuring out how much thread I need of each color. The darkest color will be the base 1/5th of the way up the side. The remaining 4 colors will each be 1/5th of the side. I know this an ambitious project for someone new to rope baskets. Step son and DIL recently purchased a lake house, DIL has a corner staked out for her reeading corner. I want her to have a basket next to her chair for her books. I have viewed many rope basket tuttorials. Yours are the best! Thank you so much. Elizabeth

Thanks Elizabeth for your supportive comment. Sounds like a fun project. A few ideas come to mind. To save on your yellow thread colours you could use beige for your spool of thread on the top of your machine and that would keep the centre of your basket all beige. Same colour as your rope. And the yellow would be in your bobbins. For a larger basket I probably go through 3 bobbins but that is for a wider zigzag. If you want your colour to show more than make your zig zag narrower. Because all sewing machines are different I would suggest you do a sample with a narrower zigzag on a piece of white fabric and keep changing it slightly until you like the depth of colour. You will use up more thread of course. I use Gutterman polyester thread and buy the 250m/274 yd spools. I can’t say exactly how many yds you will need. I would just buy a few spools of each colour and you can always return what you don’t use. I’m sure she will be very pleased with her gift!

On my machine which is a Husqvarna I would use a 2 on my machine. If that is two tight then try a 3.

Hi Patti, I love your video’s & how talented you are! I have made a couple baskets & love doing it. However, I’ve ran into a problem & was hoping you could please help me out. When wrapping fabric for an accent color, I find that I end up with many stitches skipping & cant figure out how to stop it. I have adjusted tension, stitch size, changed tread & needle, but it still skips. When stitching on normal flat fabric stitches & tension are perfect, so I don’t think its my machine. I also cut the wrapped fabric on the bias, so it wraps nicely & not too loose. Have you ever had this happen to you? If so, can you please share any troubleshooting advice? Thank you so much in advance for your help!

Sounds like you have done all the tests. Might be that you are pulling on the rope when you start to use the fabric. Try and wrap at least 1 or 2 ft and then start sewing so you can let the rope still glide through your fingers. Just an idea. Hard to tell when I can’t watch you.

Just went and looked up my link. It’s so hard these days with such a shortage of supplies on almost everything. But it looks like 1 - 100 ft hank of rope was $18.15. Looks like larger quantities is out of stock right now. So couldn’t see the price. But it does not make sense that you saw 2 for $50.

I would buy the beads which have a large hole that are 5mm which is slightly less than a 1/4" opening.
