You can use a combination of gestures such as pinch (pinching your finger together) and clench (clenching your fist) as well as using a motion pointer to control your Watch OS8 Apple Watch hands free. The watch is smart enough to detect when you are doing these things with your hand.

I was Very hesitant to buy a Apple Watch because I was born with only one hand. But I have been having health problems and I was practically bed ridden. I wanted a push and reminder to remind me to get up and do what I could for any amount of time. Just some movement. So when I found out I can use my ONE HAND to navigate I was so happy I made the purchase!!! I’ve had it for 5 days and my family is so proud and happy for me. I even went shopping with my daughter at IKEA!! I walked a little more than half way with my upright walker while she came behind me with the electric chair basket thingy. And I was so excited. With your help now I can navigate so much more now. Thank you for making this video. 🥰🥰🥰🥰

Thanks for this demo and indeed it's much better to do it with the iPhone. I have an Apple Watch 7, California dial on which we can only add 2 complications. I chose the date and another. I set up Assistive Touch without any activation gesture. I noticed that to indicate to me that it is active there is a rectangle which appears around the date. And ... he doesn't show up all the time. Sometimes I really have to move my arm so that it activates (it's even worse when I choose an activation gesture but maybe this is due to my bracelet / While waiting for the leather one I took one at a third party seller who may not be tight enough).

This shows an interesting capability of the watch, but it shouldn’t be only for accessibility sake, could have been marketed as a selling point for everyone, it should let you simply use the gestures as shortcuts for actions and open specific apps and etc. I wanted to use a gesture for apple pay instead of of double clicking the side button, the best I could do was a gesture to activate assistive touch, otherwise there’s a cursor all the time on screen, then another gesture to open the wallet, but then there’s no way to confirm the card for payment, there’s no substitute for double clicking the side button. The only thing I see myself needing to do with one hand and it won’t let me

Im trying to do the same at the moment- I want to be able to pay without touching my watch but all it does is open my wallet. And it still asks me to double click the side button to confirm which you can do from the watch face to pay so it makes no difference. I understand the need for confirmation but it would be good if Apple could add a double tap side button option for one of the gestures

well it is a "hidden" feature since you have to delve into accesibility settings, which people don't usually do unless they really need such settings, and I've read people complaining that hand gestures didn't work very well. Now it has become mainstream and should work better and be better integrated in apps so yeah, what apple really did was fix an existing feature and advertise it as new

Hey dude thanks good pointers with the double pinch to wake up instead of double clench. Any ideas how i can get the credit card payment to come up straight away ie double pinch > double clench for credit card ( tried this but it keeps saying confirm with assistive touch) instead of “hold near reader”

So, you literally pinched two fingers together whatever you’re doing that pinch gesture? For us, people who use voice over as we are visually impaired or blind, it would be a double pinch for a double tap. Will it be correct? Please try it out with VoiceOver, I was once again, I can’t. Wish I could though, because it reminds me of John Gibson‘s book quote the peripheral. “

Mr. Harris, I wouldn’t be laughing at that too lightly as there are literally people in the world who have disabilities where one hand does not work. Therefore, and as a student going through a special education, masters degree, I’m looking to see if this feature would work for those individuals. this would be like having “switch access, “enabled on your iPhone for these individuals. Although I cannot do it myself, as my watch is very old and still on watchOS 6, I wanna see what you think about using this for people with disabilities or one hand does not work. Hopefully, that is not the hand with the watch on board. If it is, however, just replace the watch on the hand that works.

I have a neurological disorder that wastes away my nerves and muscles so I’m wondering if the watch is not able to detect muscle movement in my arm, because hand gestures is not working 😒 Truly disheartening to find a feature that is intended for people who have problems with their hands and just might have a disability that affects their muscles, And find out that this feature does not work because you’re disabled and don’t have the muscles to trigger the feature 😡
