The iron pick is for mining the rune.
There are currently different numbered runes, but to my knowledge they all do the same thing.

The runes can be mined without sandstorm if an overgrown pickaxe is used

if you get a curse you'll need 3 runes to remove it and 1 more to re enchant the tool

In rc 2 the caves are that dark. I'm not sure if Zik is going to fix it or add some kind of light helmet you can wear. While I could turn up my gamma, I'd rather keep the screen how it is so that new players don't think the caves are as bright.
