I didn't know that Fat Tony had died until yesterday, and it bummed me out. Not just because I love that character, but because the show is so stagnant that I didn't even realize it'd happened 13 years ago.

I very much agree. It'd be a shame if we get to Season 99 and NONE of the original voice cast are still alive, that all of their voices have been digitally captured and recreated using AI. That none of the charm and the magic of it is still there.

A way I can see the Simpsons ending is with another movie of them trying to escape the limbo they're in. I think that would be cool, seeing the family realise they've been stuck for the last roughly 35 years (as of writing) and try to change that. Have the ending be like a montage of all the stuff that would've happend if time didn't stand still, Maggie growing up, Bart and Lisa graduating, that sorta stuff. And then have a scene where an old Homer and Marge are just enjoying the retired life, sitting outside on a summer evening, watching the sunset.

Hey here’s a thought. I remember back when the first Simpsons Movie came out, there was a commercial interview asking Matt Groening and others questions. One of them was if the theme song had any lyrics. Yes and only Matt Groening and Danny Elfman know them. If the Simpsons are ever gonna end, they have to give us the full theme song.

Ameircan Dad! at least rebranded like 100%. When one of the creators left it did a 180°, got new characters, tossed out a ton of characters, the plot-beat changed, it got funnier and maybe more relatable to the audience that stuck around and grew up with it. I remember as a kid seeing the world of warcraft episode as a WoW playing teen thinking it was hammy and missed the mark, but latest season klaus stoned playing eldenring as an astrologer, right on the money😂

For me it would be good enough if the show ends with season 40 (a nice round number) that would bring the stories of the side characters to a close and a second movie right after for a banger ending.

I think the thing to ask is, is it relevant enough to keep going? Would anyone *really* miss it if it did end now, if they could go out on a high note? Where does The Simpsons even fit into pop culture now? The episodes might have improved recently, but this show peaked a very long time ago.

The Simpsons ending i imagine would probably be something like them moving out of Springfield because of rising prices n stuff (the classic Simpsons riffing on current issues) and the whole movie ending with the family moving out (like how in 90s shows characters leaving or shows ending cause they "went to college")

This just STINKS of a show DESPERATELY trying to be relevant again. "Let's kill off a character to make headlines! (But one who's barely in it, shh!)"

Because the core of what the Simpsons is refuses to grow up while following whatever trends are currently in circulation... ... any story around their future would lack any possible impact whatsoever.

Most long-running franchises do not keep at it with the exact same program. Most shows, even when they're theatrical shorts like Mickey Mouse, Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry, etc. would eventually transition from one version of the franchise to another. Sure, the core idea of the franchise may be the same, but it's not like most of these shows are still going the same way. Though at the same time, The Simpsons is far from the only show to keep going with no sign of stopping. Just look at Sesame Street, another of the longest running and most profitable television shows of all time: it's gone on since 1969 and *still* isn't anywhere near cancellation. But even the longest running shows have to end eventually. The longest run show in *history,* Guiding Light, went on for 72 years, from 1937 to 2009. And obviously, a lot of changes had to be made over time with such a ludicrously long run.

Here’s what I think they should have done with the Simpsons: The Simpsons have been a product of their time, a spoof of a 90s suburban family/moral centric sitcoms of the time. I really that factor combined with the fact that the characters don’t age despite the fact that the setting/time period reflects that of the real world. I know the writers try to incorporate such into the shows humor and changing homers past but, again, I find that more frustrating especially when the quality of the show arguably declined. I think the show, at least in its traditional format, should have just ended in 1999-2000. I do like the comics because they unlike the show can get away with more surreal material and that arguably keeps the universe from feeling dated/out of place. The Halloween specials are the same thing I think they can use the characters in full perch movie parodies, video games, etc. I’m open for debate

Larry Dalrymple actually never had one episode about him, he was quite literally a background character in the sense that he just shows up in the background scenes at Moe's to just show that they are other people there beside the main cast. I think that was the whole joke for the Simpsons to suddenly have a whole episode dedicated to his death, where we find out Homer and everyone else apparently had a deep friendship and shared experiences with him that the audience never got to see. I binged the first 25 seasons of the Simpsons, and when I saw online that they killed off Larry, I didn’t even remember who he was

the only way i see the show truly ending is if either matt groening dies or if 1 of the long time cast members like dan castellaneta and nancy cartwright dies and even in those cases i have a hard time seeing it end considering we all know disney's tendency for milking things for everything they're worth if marvel and star wars proves anything.

Thing is in Australia Neighbours finally 'ended' and everyone tuned in and then it did so well it got brought back but not really and so the irony is any attempt to end it may just pick up ratings so much that it wouldnt stick. But yeah, let them end it on their own terms before it ends on some arbitrary whimper.

If anything the surprising good quality of recent seasons should be more incentive to end the show soon, that way it ends on a more positive note. If the show ends during a bad season it will forever be mocked as the show that overstayed its welcome then canned, if the show ends during a good season then it will be remembered as a long lasting pop culture phenomenon that has touched many lives before finally ending.

What about that other side character that got killed off... 10 or 11 years ago? I think it was an episode about Krusty the Clown, and that character was close to him? I DO recall it was the same night as the premiere of the "Simpsons Guy" crossover that we all know.

I always suspected we'd get some big three part episode/movie as the penultimate thing - then, just a humble little standard-length episode as the actual end of the series that quietly alludes to the first episode and the roots of the show. It seems right to somehow end exactly how it began, like they tried in a way with 'Holidays Of Future Passed' in Season 23, which was written as a possible last episode. Just a pinch after or before the 1000th episode... if there's 22/23 episodes a year on average, that puts you at about 10 more seasons before its officially done. Regardless, I think they'll get somewhere in the 900 episode ballpark - between 39-42 seasons feel like a good number - would take till season 45 to hit 1000. If capitalism truly has no decency, I could maybe see yearly 30 min specials after that, like Peanuts, until the heat death of the universe. Personally, I'd prefer shorter seasons of 13 truly bang-up episodes - they average about that many great ones per season, and if they could focus a pinch more on some of them that'd make all the difference. If they weren't still beholden to a degree to Fox, they probably would shorten the episode order per season. They also have this odd thing where 9 episodes from the previous season are held over to begin the start of the next season, so some shorter seasons overall would rectify that and have a clean ending where there isn't a shortened 9 episode final season.

Ur right they should end with most of the cast intact. Living in Germany and being a huge fan of Spongebob i've already witnessed an old voice cast being replaced in almost its entirety. From the main Spongebob cast only the voices of Spongebob, Sandy and a few side characters are left and it rly makes me sad to even try to watch these newer episodes. Also I never considered this but what would happen to South Park if either Mat or Trey couldn't do the voices anymore? Scary thought.

Since the executives won’t let the show die I think the best option would be to retool it to age up all the characters by 15 years or so with an all-new voice cast. While ending the show altogether would be the best thing to do, if it has to go on it needs some major changes.

The Simpsons is long overdue for an ending, its slowly losing its charm with the lack of a orchestral soundtrack in the later seasons and episode plots becoming repetitive. I know some people are saying the newest couple of seasons are good but how long can they keep up the average/better than quality for? I'd say maybe enough to get a finale out but knowing how they are handling things, they are gonna keep it up for many more seasons and the quality will most likely drop again.

I just want an It's Always Sunny/Simpsons crossover. Charlie hanging out with Bart and/or Ralph or Frank doing deals with Mr. Burns Dennis making friends with Sideshow Bob? I could see plenty of fun possibilities.

The thing about the Simpsons is that ending the main show never risks destroying the franchise. The show is so iconic now that Simpsons fans would pick up any sequel or spin-off set in the Simpsons universe, provided they are well written/made. A sequel or spinoff has the benefit of keeping the fundamental formula that makes the show great (at least originally) while allowing a 'reset' with new settings, plots and characters that would serve to refresh the stories. Even if it doesn't work out and they decide to resume the old show, a few years of hiatus would give the audience some breathing room they needed to be ready for new episodes, as well as writers time to do new episodes right. Unfortunately, I have a feeling the showrunners are too risk adverse to do it.

I was seeing one person before mention something that would be a nifty ending, to bookend everything: have the Simpson family be approached by studio executives to turn the story of their lives into a show. Shenanigans ensue until, at the end, they all race home to watch the first episode, this final sequence mirroring the same intro found for the show itself. Personally, I'd prefer if such an ending mirrored the original intro, and not any of the subsequent revisions, but any way of doing that could work well. Also, Disney could easily still milk some Simpsons-related IP for all it has if they end the show proper. Built in to the show itself is the potential spinoff of Radioactive Man. They even adapt some of the old Bongo Comics stories. And, as a bit of a fun mind screw, while it can be established that the show would be fictional in the Simpsons universe, they could show that the Simpsons is fictional in the Radioactive Man universe (possibly being a TV show there). Other spinoffs, of course, could be Itchy and Scratchy, as well as McBain, but I think Radioactive Man has more legs (especially more than Itchy and Scratchy).

From what I can remember, Bleeding Gums Murphy, Dr Marvin Monroe, Frank Grimes, Maud Flanders, Troy McClure, Edna Krabappel, and now Larry are all canonically dead in the Simpsons current continuity. Troy and Edna were written out because of their voice actors' deaths, I think the rest were all in-universe deaths from various stories over the years. Those are just the ones I can remember though.

Another possible way I've thought of ending it is by making the final season something they've never done before: a whole season-long arc. Episodes - more than just a couple - that follow on from each other and say goodbye to everyone in Springfield as they move on organically.

A great point about the Friends comparison. A good show doesn't disappear because it ends, especially not in the streaming world. Heck, I recently binged the original Flintstones and that series ended nearly 60 years ago.

The final episode of the Simpsons should be about then finally leaving the time bubble the series has been in the last 40 years, having the all the characters at the age they'd have in the present day and being about moving on. Touching on some really modern day topics like how the kids, as grown ups, can't seem to find affordable houses unlike their dad. Maybe with the imminent death of one of the parents as something to bring the family together for a final goodbye.

When they do inevitably end the show, I hope they keep rerunning the Halloween episodes. Honestly, during October, if my dad is watching the simpsons on tv, I can’t help but watch as well, since they always have a decent amount of care put in

Thing is if the Simpsons stops now we know it's not coming back. If they stopped it sooner, people would want its return.

There is the idea to loop the Simpsons back around to the very first episode but I think that takes away from everything that the characters have gone thought and the changes to them. I think for a second movie they should change the status quo in a big way. Maybe Abe passes away and the family have to deal with the grief. Something to say that the family have changed and broken out of this cycle they are in. Super Eyepatch wolf has a great video on this cycle they are in, breaking it would give a good reason to end the show aside from the money / logistics to keepng the show going.

I wonder if it'd be too drastic an idea to prerecord the finale of The Simpsons and then just shelf it until the end has finally come. At the very least, it'd avoid the issue of what if one of the core characters' voice actors were to pass, they'd already have the end locked and loaded to send the show out with a bang instead of a whimper.

We have this show in Australia called Neighbours that like The Simpsons was on the air for a long time (36 years I think) before getting cancelled. It got a great final which lots of people loved and watched but literally less than a year later it got picked up again by Amazon making the whole exercise feel pointless. So really I couldn’t care less if the Simpsons is still on or not because I feel as though as soon as it shows its series final, it will be no time at all before it’s rebooted and put back on the air.

In regards to the voice cast theres somthing I've been wondering about. From what I've heard Disney has a system for its legacy characters voice actor where they all have a successor waiting in the wings if the voice actor dies or is otherwise unable to works. This extends to characters they have aquired cause this lead to a falling out with Steve Whitmire, who was the puppeteer for Kermit the frog after Jim Henson passes away after having disagreements about who got to be his sucessor. This has had me wondering if this same rule applys to the Simpsons cast and what that means for the ones who play multiple roles.

The issue with a final episode of the simpsons is that the show has done ALOT of stuff you could have considered a finale. I remember thinking how the simpson movie could have been a final, or the episodes where we saw their future selves. Idk what cliched ending the simpsons could do to end their slice of life comedy. The Simpson loved to go through ideas. I feel like its going to be a lacklustre episode. Which makes me wish they just decide to end on a small note. Something akin to a message to the audience through the simpson characters themselves. And then maybe ending will conclude with the future selves repeating history with their new families or selves, coming together to celebrate another year as Simpsons but within a bigger overall family, hinting at a future where although are simpson cast will be gone, it doesn't mean their world is over or dying anytime soon.

The final episode of the Simpsons should be a sequel to the episode “Springfield up” with eric idle returning as the documentary filmmaker making his final trip to Springfield only this time the characters have actually aged accordingly kids are adults adults are old or dead depending on age or story and we learn what their lives are like who married who what crazy lives they lead etc end it with the documentary premiering and we can see them all watching a montage of the shows gratest moments as we the audience reminisce one last time with the characters

The problem is it’s a lot easier to just keep throwing money at the animators and writers to keep making more episodes than taking the effort to organize such a huge event and write such a great finale to such a long running series.

The new episodes don't reach the heights of the first ten years; at best they can be as good as the movies; plus Marges voice is genuinely heart breaking to hear. I kind of wish that they had just done a time skip with everyone grown up and older like their flash forward episodes. With them still keeping the same format.

I have an idea for how to "end" the simpsons. Basically, the last 2 episodes has grandpa telling a fav. story he experienced with the main characters, totaling 5 stories. At the end, what a wonderful world by Louis Armstrong plays, and the credits rool, with a collection of universally loved Simpsons moments. Then, after the credits, it is shown that there is a second Simpsons-universe, that is taking place around the time of the third season of the original simpsons, with the old drawing style, but in modern times, that could then be used to have new seasons, but please only after a long break, to finally get some direction back in the series, as well as bring some characters back, like Crusty the Clowns father, who I wish to see return as a character.

Perhaps with the aging main cast, The Simpsons should either age the characters over episodes/seasons or simply replace the voice cast. Aging the characters would allow for more stories they could do.

i cant help but think of black panther and the actor who died of cancer out of nowhere, only to not even have marvel mention that as black panther seemingly disappeared...which given how old this series now, id be not surprised if that were to happen, but at the same time, that does mean that time is our only guidance for what would happen to the cast

i get the vibe that they're trying to nudge towards ending the show, what with several characters getting put in a place where they can be left in a happy ending (or, yanno, just dying)

I think it would be possible to continue The Simpsons indefinitely, without also roping in the voice actors for as long as they're able, though it would be _extremely_ difficult to pull off effectively: Future Simpson generations. Go in to the future, see children or grandchildren, slowly phase out the original characters while still keeping them as an option (Temporarily) as supporting characters. Or, maybe relatives. Either way, an alternative family, new cast, new characters. Heck, Doctor Who has been able to keep going with a constantly changing cast, and has mostly been regarded extremely positively. It would be interesting to see The Simpsons take a similar route, especially after all this time. Never would a show have taken such a drastic turn after _so_ long.

In germany homers voice actor already died and... idk since his death i havent watched any seasons anymore. The og german homer has a great voice and I actually always liked him better than the actual english homer. The new homer voice actor does a great job sure, but it doesnt feel like the simpsons anymore. So they should really end the simpsons before anyone else in the english cast dies for that reason. At least the english audience should be able to have a "happy ending"

Maybe because I grew up with the spanish dub buy I don't think that a VA death should mark the end of anythin. And the older seasons are still there for anyone to watch, I'm not bothered by the new episodes and I enjoy seeing some of the newer ones every now and then. This one in particular was pretty neat. Maybe reducing the number of episodes per year and making them longer could work better. I would not be mad if there's still some version of The Simpsons in my 60s.
