On a 50w laser, what setting would be ideal for the "sanding pass" not to be discolored, I want original colour? I did some g19, g17, and use the laser as a sanding option but get that brownish effect.
@LaserEverything
@LaserEverything 2 года назад
Fiber lasers aren't really designed for plastic. All of the settings I have for pmags burn the material in some way which is why we get the different colors, because we are controlling the burn. No luck yet on a pass that doesn't end with discoloration.

Does this work with a diode laser too? Also did you add any sprays and chemicals to produce these different colors?

@LaserEverything

It sounds like you want both honestly. Stone, some plastics, and tumblers are all going to do much better with CO2. pmags and metal are going to turn out significantly better with the fiber. If you have to pick one I'd start with a fiber. It's easier to cheat and do stone and tumblers on fiber than it is to do metal with a CO2

@LaserEverything
@LaserEverything 2 года назад
I've never tried it so I just went and grabbed the pmag from the video to test, it does not come off with a HARD scratch of the fingernail. If it's scratching off you probably aren't quite using enough power. Gotta get just a little bit of that plastic removed from the surface, so that's where I'd start.

Hey man, I am fascinated by laser work and would like to try it out, Im not ready for a huge investment, what would you recommend for pmags, would omtech 40 or any of the cheaper lasers be able to engrave polymers or scratch the surface or metal/aluminum receivers?
@LaserEverything
@LaserEverything Год назад
I'd probably recommend a diode just because the CO2 laser dot size is so big it's going to make it hard to mark the items you listed with any precision. That said I haven't really tried marking pmags with a diode so not sure how that would go. Depending on your budget you could check out our recent review of the Basic 2R from 3PLASEES an entry level fiber. It's gonna take a little more work to get nice marks on plastic due to its limited frequency range but would be a great great machine for quick AR lowers and stuff like that.

Just like seeing the boxes I want checked checked and settings for each hatch filled out the way I want it done rather than just letting the computer do it. I dunno. More superstitious than anything that ezcad will just find a way to fuck it up. You're likely fine to just click crosshatch.

@cdtbucci

Is the minimum for pmags 30watts or could you do 20watts?
@LaserEverything
@LaserEverything 2 года назад
For pmags specifically less power is better. These settings are designed to just *barely* kiss the plastic. Too much heat and you're melting.

Thanks for getting back to me! My friend told me it is the manufacturing date. That makes sense because there's 12 numbers with an arrow pointing to one of the numbers, then there's another number like 19. For example, the arrow is pointing to 3 and the big number is 20 then it was made in March 2020!

@LaserEverything
@LaserEverything 3 года назад
Variations on those three but what you can get is limited because you're working on plastic. Fibers are really designed for marking metal so we're already kinda cheating the system to get these results.

Either check out Discord Server or Facebook group - links in the description - or you can check out our new forum over at www.lasereverything.net/forum and I'm sure we can get you pointed in the right direction.

Yeah definitely, having control of the pulse with basically gives you a fine control over the power being applied to the object so when working with plastics that's always going to be a plus

hi.with a 50w laser how can i engrave on plastic
@LaserEverything
@LaserEverything 2 года назад
Different plastics mark differently, some work - some don't. Fiber lasers aren't designed for plastic they are designed for metal. That said, usually it's best if you're going to try anyway to start with very high speed, low-medium power, high frequency with lots of repetition. Best way to get started.

not sure what lycal is, but silicone/rubbers are generally better with Co2 laser wavelength. Some types of rubber can be done with fiber using care, but will require patience and testing to not burn it up too much.

If you want a contour line, that can be added via a checkmark in the hatch setting of ezcad (or a line sublayer in lightburn). If you mean for the red light outlining the shape, that's in the red dot settings in F3 of ezcad or framing option in lightburn.
