Dude.. I can't thank you enough for this video. I've been looking for YEARS on how to EQ my voice the right way. I have a really deep voice and have been asking people left and right and researching on the net for so long trying to get a good sound. No one was helpful. This setting doesn't seem to put my voice in the music but it's SO much cleaner now. I have have to play around with it more to get the perfect sound but thank you SO much. -10 year musician

Thank you so much for this tutorial! I've been teaching myself to record music for about 5 years now and it's so hard to find reasonably tutorials like this. And most of the people who know something worthwhile say stuff like, "Every mix is different, so I can't teach you." It's nice to know that someone is courteous enough to share these things and give people his book for free. Thanks!

Hey, it's funny because I actually just answered the same question on my How To Master A Song vid. I don't think it's ideal to mix on headphones, it's certainly not impossible but it is more difficult. At least I find it much more difficult -but at the end of the day it's about the RESULTS and it doesn't matter how you get there. So if for whatever reason you have to use headphones, it can be done, but just MAKE SURE that you reference back on your monitors. Hope that helps!

Spot on. I had come to the same conclusion about listening level--softer, not louder. I'd learned this some time ago, and finally, everything started to fall into place. Not sure just why, but I think it has something to do with freq response and sound pressure of human hearing.

Yeah it's a very similar process to how you'd EQ instruments. I think that's some good 'rule of thumb' advice you've gotten, but it's not ALWAYS the case. I've found that it's best not to spend too much time upfront EQing something, rather do a quick EQ to where it sounds good, and then tweak it in the CONTEXT of the MIX. This is very important, because it doesn't matter if it sounds great on it's own, it needs to sound great with the surrounding instruments. Hope that helps!

Even with an excellent quality mic, you'll still need to mix the vocals in with the instrumentation, or as mentioned, it won't sound blended and in unison. It would just sound like vocals and instrumentation playing with one being on top of the other.
@Stratocat93
@Stratocat93 10 лет назад
MOST of the kind of mixing you should be using to keep the instruments from sounding like they are on top of each other is pan and volume. Volume to "push and pull" the instruments farther away and closer to you, and pan to "widen" the mix. Eqing should be used, obviously, but it can ruin a mix quickly too.

Alex Fairgood It makes a better recording artist out of you when you have as crappy a voice as I do! You learn a lot about your editing tools that way haha. The only thing worse than a so-so vocal track is a still so-so vocal track that has way too much eq! XD

Ok if anyone see's this, I'd love to know if you master the vocals with no effects on it first or mix the vocals with effects: eq, reverb, etc? please respond.
@JeromeAloneMusic
@JeromeAloneMusic 10 лет назад
You'll want to start playing with eq in the mix, some compression and likely a bit of reverb (obviously a reverb that fits with the other instruments' reverb) but always keep a copy of the raw vocal track, so if it ends up too messed up, you can start from scratch.

Or you can just use a great mic and not EQ at all, or do as little EQ as possible. I hate eq'ed vocals that sound unnatural. For someone with very expensive audio systems, there's nothing worse than ruined vocals. Like in this video, vocals end up sounding thin, lifeless and overly sibilant. Basically, the singer ends up sounding totally different if you hear him in person compared to the way he sounds after his recording was all EQ'd.
@theslimeylimey
@theslimeylimey 11 лет назад
I love very pure clean natural vocals too so I agree to a point and yes, many recordings today are absolute crap. However, the context of the voice (rest of the mix) influences how we perceive that voice so it will sound different anyway depending on the situation. It's relative and not absolute (like how we visually perceive contrast) so EQing done right is good like any other coloration.

Mojave MA-200 ..no EQ needed most times. Killer vocal mic
@bryanusinger2272
@bryanusinger2272 11 лет назад
I disagree entirely.. as my other comment says(to a lesser degree). Any cheap budget LDC mic will have a super aggressive & painful to listen to high end. They are already boosted in the 4-12k range naturally & dont take large EQ boosts well at all. Take any MXL or Behringer mic & put a massive high shelf boost on & your ears will almost bleed. If that works for you then enjoy your ensuing deafness folks!

I think it's important to mention that both subtractive EQ and additive EQ are useful in different ways. For example, subtractive EQ can be used to 'notch out' a spot for a kick drum hit to sit on top of a bass note when they are sharing the same space. This can be done by identifying the frequency range of the offending bass note and creating a narrow notch at that frequency. It usually requires just a very subtle reduction (a few db at most) to let the kick drum sit on top and sound more dynamic, more present, with more punch. Thanks Rob for sharing your ideas!

Hey Ryan, yeah thanks for your mail! -It's a good question.. You can do that but you have to remember that every effect on the individual vocals will be affected by that. Will this make a big difference? Probably not. But say for example there's a 'popping' sound on the vocal, your compressor is going to react to that and bring down the entire vocal which sounds unnatural. Here's the thing, you're going to use an EQ on each vocal anyway so you may as well put it on there. Hope that helps!

It's really up to you. As you develop your own workflow you will decide for yourself. It is worth pointing out that the more plug-ins you use the more CPU you will be using. The way I approach EQ is like this. The first EQ the track runs through addresses problems. Like mic-POP. Or if its drums, bleed from other drums/cymbals. Basically the first EQ is for getting rid of any excess frequency content or problems withing the audio. Or defining a specific tone.

as an old veteran with 5800 tracks under my bely i tend to not listen too much when young whippersnappers are spouting about eq etc - dont get me wrong, one can learn from any source - but i typically take my advice from the "acknowledged" masters. That being said, I would like to say that this video is pretty solid and quite insightful. This gives me hope for the future of production. And I have to say "Well done" to Mr. Williams for making this quality video.

Yeah you're right, -that was a bit of a sweeping generalization to try counter the 'never place EQ before compression' sentiment :) It definitely comes down to personal preference and the situation. I personally just don't like the sound of the compresser reacting to frequencies that you don't want in there anyway. I think you hit the nail on the head there though, utility EQing first, compress, and then 'creative' EQ to taste. Thanks for the feedback and sharing your experience!

You're good at explaining in a brief way... I use what one almost could call "vintage equipment" because it works best for instrumental recordings, which I enjoy the most, so doing vocal recordings is often a pain in the ass... but this tip about actively looking for offensive frequencies in the vocal track, it's a nice approach to getting the sound you want without spending too much time
