Much appreciated, it worked. Quick tip for everyone; pay attention to which disk you're formating, he typed in disk2 but in my case it was disk3, so pay close attention guys.
Thanks for taking the time to post this. Fixed a problem I had with an external drive that would no mount after the Mac shutdown in the middle of a file transfer. Very clear and to the point instructions!
can someone please help me? when I get to the password line it doesn't allow me to input anything. all it shows is the key symbol. How did you go about it?
Fixed my HD. Just unboxed a Seagate, it wanted me to use an app to format it for Mac, i decided to use disk utility instead. Unfortunately the format/erase process failed. The disk would not mount after, thought i was F**ked (i need this for an out of state video job in a few days). I followed the instructions and now this HD is fixed. Thanks!
@@nsa.jonathan4738 I’ve had a few seagates that were just dead out of the box. If you plug it in and get no response from the drive, I’d just return it and get a new one.
Thank you really very much! After looking for 3 weeks in Google for how to format my LaCie 4 T HD I was going to buy a new one but then I discover this video: it worked perfectly at first try.

This worked for me on my Mac Studio. It did not do the prompting around the 2:39 mark so I retried and still did not do the prompting. I then opened Finder and tried to drag a file into the HD and it worked. Thanks!

discussions.apple.com/thread/251108946?sortBy=best Restart the computer. Immediately after the chime hold down the Command-R keys until Apple logo and progress bar appear. Wait until the Utility Menu appears. Select Disk Utility then click on the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the drive (out-dented entry with type and size info) from the side list. Click on the Erase button in the Disk Utility toolbar. A panel should drop down. In the drop down panel set the partition scheme to GUID. Set the Format type to APFS (SSDs only) or Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and click on the Done button when it is activated. Quit Disk Utility.

I had the same problem and followed the steps, although in the end I had to erase the disk from the terminal. It has been a whole day and it is still in the erasing process. Will it take longer? Or is there a possibility that it has frozen?
this way not work with my problem, terminal error message "Unable to begin erase operation: A writable disk is required (-69772)" have you facing same probelem?
If you take your time, watch the video and follow the instructions in the description it should work fine. I was completely stuck before I find this vid. All sorted now, thanks.

it does not work for me unfortunately : I have this error message from terminal : Error: -69825: Wiping volume data to prevent future accidental probing failed
I kept getting "Unmount Disk Failed", so I used this command to unmount: "hdiutil detach /dev/disk2" (remember to put your correct disk#) then I continued with his command to erase the disk. Hope this helps anyone having unmount disk failed error
I got "Unable to begin erase operation: A writable disk is required (-69772)". I then ran "hdiutil detach /dev/disk2" followed by removing and connecting my thumb stick. After I've done this I could run "diskutil eraseDisk ExFAT Untitled /dev/disk2" successfully.
