We see it in the movies all the time but how realistic are they? I decided to set up my own trap and try to escape.
Special thanks to Elleca and Sam for who also completed the challenge and helped out.

On the hand one, if you can get the rope snaked around a leg then squeeze the hamstrings to force a bend in the leg will that take the pressure off the hands long enough to give you a moment to wiggle out? Would like to hear more on what went wrong on that one.

A thought: with one leg tied, the first thing you might want to try doing is seeing if you can wiggle off the shoe from your free foot, so you can use both hands to hold the rope, and your toes to act as extra fingers to loosen the snare (only possible with certain kinds of snare)

I think the way to escape always involves releasing tension from the knot. So I imagine that a way of releasing yourself from the two hand tie would be rounding the rope two or three times around your ankle, then bending up again, trying to keep the rope under the sole of your feet, so you'll end up standing on top of it. Then holding the rope with your hands to stabillise yourself, slightly bend forward ro release tension from the knot, and wiggle it open. I don't know if I explained myself properly, but I think that would do the trick.

Hmm, yes. I dont koow if understood correctly. But i think if your able to make the rope go around your ankle 2 or 3 times you would have enough friction to pull most your weight up with your foot. Its painfull tho.
@mortalitydoesstuff8965
@mortalitydoesstuff8965 Год назад
You would need to create slack in the rope before you somehow managed to get an ankle around it. I think if your wrists are what's tied you'd almost have an easier time just climbing the rope normally, creating a ton of slack, and then locking in your position by wrapping the rope around your leg and stepping on it while it's over the laces of the leg it's wrapped around. Then you can use one arm to hold on so you don't fall and one to wiggle the knot loose. That means you gotta be able to climb a rope with no legs tho which is already hard enough for most people without their wrists bound together
@brandonnguyen9555
@brandonnguyen9555 Год назад
Oh I see someone else came up with the conclusion, indeed by grappling your hand on a section of the rope, you stop the tension of the rope on that point, after that the rope becomes loose and free for movement as it is not being dragged by your weight, but if you did like the fat guy did, using your fat ass belly and stand on the knot the whole rope become tensed again and that's why that moron cant free himself
@erikscott5709

If you like this kind of puzzle, then you're going to *love* "aerial rope" (aka "corde lisse"). Starting with aerial silks is the "normal" route, but some schools will start beginners on rope if they want to. My suggestion is to invert, put the rope behind one knee (a "hocks climb"), and then crunch just enough to take the tension off your wrists and release them. The inversion is the first half of a "skin the cat". And unless you've trained hamstring strength, you might want to squeeze the knee tighter with your other leg. Think along the lines of Judo's Triangle Choke. There is a significant danger that if you watch this you will become addicted: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-N2AppGhPQQs.html

For the two hands tied escape I wonder if some sort of dynamic/kipping attempt would work. What I mean is kip up like you are climbing a salmon ladder and try to grab the rope up higher so you can loosen the knot and get your hands free.

@norats122

My idea for the two hand escape is to climb your legs up, wrap one around the rope (still vertical), then slowly try to force that leg horizontal (perhaps using the other leg to pull down the ankle of the first leg). If you can do this then you'd have a wrap in the rope around your leg which would be incredibly uncomfortable but release a lot of pressure on the hands, possibly allowing an escape.

I don't know ho realistic this is depending on how tight the plams of your hands are tied together, but maybe trying to do a dynamic pull-up and grabing the rope with your hands higher to give some slack to the knot, then pull-up again and losen the knot pulling with your mouth!

Well, everything depends on the thickness of the rope itself. Try to climb up the rope from I,legend movie... pretty hard, since the rope was so thin - not "regular" old school western rope. It might be more deadly, when the thin rope cut into your ancles and you are not able to climb up, because it is cutting also into your fingers. But adrenaline may be helpful in this situation.

My friends and I tried these as a kid for fun. At the time, i was maybe 90 lb and climbed like a monkey. The key isn’t brute strength. Its flexibility and power to weight ratio. Like Olivia, it was much easier for me to pull 90lb up a rope than my friends to pull 130lb. Their weight on the rope was unbearable by itself. For the hands and single leg i lifted my free leg and looped my foot into the rope. Then lifted myself and looped again. Repeated until it took the tension off the loop, then used my teeth to undo the knot. For the double foot, I pulled myself all the way up to a “standing” position, looped my arm in the rope then lifted my feet to reach knot. It all hurt like hell but was doable. I wouldn’t try it now at my current age and weight. Also if you were yanked up by one leg and swinging from a trap, you wouldn’t be thinking of how to escape. You would be passed out from the dislocated femur only waking up to vomit, then pass out again from your blood not circulating.

It seems like, once you get to where you're upright instead of upside down, wrap the rope around your arm so that you can hang from that arm without requiring the grip strength of that hand to hold you up while your other hand goes down to untie the knot. At least that concept works in my head. For the arms tied one, the pain might be too much, but I wonder if you could use your legs to "jump" your hands up the rope and grab it higher, releasing the tension of the knot enough to slip your hands free. It would require a lot of grip strength though.

This is why I always carry a knife it makes this a little bit easier as long as you don't drop it.

I do aerial sports and Olivia's method is what I had in my head. You need flexibility and strength, but the adrenaline should help with that in a life or death situation. Plus, once you get right side up, you could actually rest for a while by standing in the snare. She climbed up and took pressure off the knot. The other guys didn't even think of this method. They kept fiddling with the tensed knot. Impossible to open in that position.

The first one is less about strength and more about flexibility strength can be used to compensate but it's not a 1-1 exchange.

Actually I think you can solve this with brains easier the with strengh. By rythemly wiggeling to the left and right you could create a pendulum effect until ether you get to grad a ledge or wear down the rope at the point of swivel. Got to try this once I get the possibility...

IRL the rope would be tied to something (tree) so really the top bar would be in and an option to grab.
