Oh this must be ESP because I'm trying to get started I have literally thousands of things I've collected over the years and I'm at the age where I need to start getting rid of things pronto and this is the one thing that has stopped me from progressing is how to ship the darned stuff!

The thing with pirate ship is that they won’t sponsor a video for any RU-vidr. Making a specific video about pirate is giving them a free ad. It’s really no different than using eBay shipping. You connect pirate ship to your account and you can import your sales. And there’s a little checkbox if you want to insure an item for nominal fee. We insure for $101 to override USPS shipping. I had no idea that the post office charged 2 lbs. when something weighed less. I've learned so much from you about packing. I need to start estimating because I box everything up ahead of time. I'm running out of room! This was a helpful video on shipping! Thank you! I love ground advantage! Great job on wrapping the candy dish. It's going to take the buyer a long time to unwrap it! Lol

Yes, when over 1 pound. For ounces, I should have added in the video that the cost changes at 4 ounce increments. Not really a concern but when over 1 pound, it jumps by 1 pound! Iit did arrive just fine and I received positive feedback. The masking tape actually peels much easier than packing tape. Thanks, Maxine!

Yes, GA comes with insurance but we honestly don't trust it to pay out. Since, we use Pirate Ship, we insure for $101 (on some things) to over ride the USPS insurance. Have you ever been paid for a claim? Thanks, Susan!

Great job Vickie! I love Ground Advantage too! I estimate shipping costs the EXACT same way as you, to the T! I am charging $5.99 for my under a pound small box items but with all the rising costs with USPS and such, I see $6.99 in the very near future. You wrapped that tall jar perfectly...I wouldn't have tackled that one even on my best day and I tackle lots!

Wonderfully informative video, Vickie. I'm wondering if buyers really prefer ground advantage or if they just choose it because it is the default/first option. I really don't think most even look! I try to keep the price I set (item plus shipping) to what I see buyers willing to pay. (I don't do offers and sales etc) If I want to use Priority I believe I'd have to lower the asking price on the item. Yes, I do overthink. I am trying to be more like you and make it easier on myself. Let's see how I do with listing for 4th quarter! This video will help. :-)

Thank you, Lynne! I can't say for sure but on a rare occasion a buyer chooses Priority. I think its just good for them to see "and feel" that they can get a lower shipping cost.

So sorry but I have to pass on that. Pirate ship will not sponsor a video and I would be giving my time to give them a free add for life. We typically only buy insurance when it's hundreds of dollars. But let's say it's around $100 value. We insure for $101 so that it overrides the USPS insurance (which we do not believe will pay out). We also require signature upon delivery for high value items ($150+). Hope that helps and thank you. Pirate ship is very easy to set up and connect to your ebay store(s). Just have to read and follow the steps.

When I weigh for eBay, I always thought that if it’s over 8 ounces you have to make it 1 pound! I never knew that it’s ok to put 9 or 10 ounces etc.

I believe USPS charges in 4 oz increments up to a pound and then it goes by the pound ie: 1lb 1oz to 2lb=2lb, 2lb 1oz to 3lb=3lb etc.

That's quite a bit to charge buyers for shipping. I don't think clothing buyers will EVER pay $15 for shipping. Reasonable price does not exceed $8, and certainly not for something small. The cost to ebayers for 2 pounds is under $8. I guess I'm amazed you charge this AND I'm amazed buyers pay it and you get sales. I will try to absorb all of this as I learn. I started with clothing and it is VERY competitive, with some buyers charging very little. When I sell denim or shoes, I can often lose money on the shipping - not much but I'm trying to be more accurate. Then other categories, like health and beauty aids and some household consumables sellers offer FREE SHIPPING. Very frustrating and difficult to compete with that. What you are doing definitely differs. Thanks for sharing.

I'm a little confused about your comment as I didn't show any clothing in this video. On a side note, most of my clothing under one pound ships for $6.95 but again I didn't show any clothing sales in this video. In general, anything over 1 pound is set up for "calculated shipping" to the buyer's zip code and they can choose either Priority OR Ground Advantage. In this video, anything over a pound shipped via Ground Advantage. With "calculated" shipping, it is all based upon the weight, dimensions and buyer's zip code. Ultimately, no matter what the shipping is, the buyer decides. But again, I am confused by your reference to clothing for this video and your $15 shipping comment. Please clarify. Thank you.

Thank You for this video! Yes, you have gone over this before in other videos and I have watched those too. I love every aspect of reselling (I know, I'm weird, most dislike some aspect of reselling), however, shipping is one aspect I have not mastered and I am still learning. So far my learning lessons have come from the fact that I undercharged shipping and have lost money, I don't want to do that. My main problem is calculating shipping not knowing where the buyer lives. I have noticed that to ship to California from Tennessee (where I live) is higher than to ship to Florida or other states. How do you overcome the differences in shipping to different states when you don't know where the buyer lives? For instance, right now I just listed a very heavy leather biker jacket size 2X. I put the jacket in a box and weighed it and it weighs 9 pounds (yep, that jacket is heavy!). The box I am using is more than 36 inches like you talked about. I went to the USPS site and checked how much it would cost to send to a California zip code and it was $48 and then I put in a Florida zip code and it came out to $28, that is a huge difference? What would you suggest I do to find a happy medium? I could watch you pack and ship all day! LOL! You are such a pro! Love your channel!

You'd use calculated shipping for this so that California is charged more than Florida--the cost you will be charged.

Two questions, when you pick a box that states 12 x 12 x 12 and yet when it is fully packed, it measures 12 1/4 x 12 1/4 x 12 are you rounding it up to 13 13 12 or are you going by the dimensions printed on the box? Also can you please do a video on pirate ship please. I am so frustrated with UPS going to the same thing that FedEx did with sure post. I know there is no coverage for USPS for delivery even though we pay insurance upfront for UPS. Please advise on buying extra insurance through pirate ship and any other things we might need to know thank you so much .

I was told the dimensions on the box are the "inside" measurements. I always add up if the measurement goes beyond the box size on any of the dimensions (L-W-H). Even if it's 1/8" over, I round up. So far I've not had an issue.

This is a gray area and one which we go with what is marked on the box even if the "outside" is a 1/4 in or more. Never had an issue. As to Pirate Ship, it is very easy to set up and connect to your ebay store(s). Just have to read the steps required. If we want to use Pirate Ship insurance (an outside company), we simply insure for at least $101 to override the USPS insurance. Or more, depending upon the value of the item we want to insure. Sorry, PS will not sponsor a video and therefore, I do not wish to spend the time giving them a free ad that will be out there forever. Hope you understand. Thank you!

So bottom line ground advantage is the best option unless your item will fit into one of their flat rate boxes and weighs more than 1 lb. Correct?

Ground advantage is the least expensive so yes it’s the lowest price option. Regular priority, not flat rate, is the next level up and only necessary if the buyer wants it delivered faster and is willing to pay for priority mail. Flat rate priority boxes are the highest rate, ship in the same timeframe as regular priority, but cost more for the same timeframe as regular priority. Flat rate boxes are best for small items that are heavy and can fit into a flat rate box that cost a flat rate. Meaning a flat charge for a particular size box. Ultimately, I think ground advantage is the best option for buyers unless they absolutely need it fast. But fast will cost them more. Ground advantage goes up to 70 pounds. So even if it weighs more than a pound, you can ship ground advantage. Priority mail goes up to 70 pounds. The price varies based upon the weight, the box measurements, and the buyer ZIP Code.

USPS Flat rate boxes are great but expensive unless you have really heavy items. You might lose out to sellers who are able to ship via ground advantage or regular Priority at a lower price.

Oh, you can use USPS Flat rate if it works for you. For us the boxes are usually too small and the cost too high to make them worthwhile to use. I always have some on hand but rarely have small items that weigh A LOT (up to 70 lbs). Thanks, Susan!

Only for small items that are heavy as we said. Ground advantage is the cheapest. Regular priority is more expensive. And flat rate is very expensive unless the item(s) is/are heavy and small. Sure didn’t mean to confuse you. Just trying to help.
