How to Evade/Dodge Kicks: Low, Body, & Head

Blocking or 'checking' is a great to defend against kicks, but evading takes zero damage. Here are 3 different ways of dodging kicks to the legs, body, and head, followed by a #MuayThai drill that you can practice with a partner. Remember the important of range -- stepping of hopping backwards may dodge the kicks, but you will likely be too far away to land a counter.

Spinning...Stuff
@KineticNateFilms

Just be carful because when you make a "C" shape, the opponent could 1: spin around and do another kick. or 2: grab the arms and palm strike to the chest braking you ribs... so personally I think the blocking the right way can help you more in a fight. Also if you block the right way you wont take any damage. IF you know how to block correctly.
@catfood_03_4stray
@catfood_03_4stray Год назад
Actually the best defence against poweful kicks is the combination of evasive action and blocking simultaneously. In the advanced Kung-Fu like the Shaolin and Wudang this is clearly observed. Not only the body should avoid shapes like the "C" mentioned, but also the "evasive blocking" should be accompanied with a counter strike or this is implied ( so as the students build up their thinking capacity ).

A recommendation I have that works for me is to stay keep range. If you keep range then your reflexes have an easier time finding what attack is coming. From what I've heard the average reaction time is 0.5 seconds. So if an attack takes longer to hit, then you can dodge it easier.

You have to drill this type of stuff 3-5 times a week for years for this stuff to work perfectly on another trained opponent. And Even then, pro fighters do a fight camp where they prep a game plan and sharpen a specific arsenal set against a specific opponent. I wouldn't use these very specific attack's for self defense. Nut shots, eye pokes, and I'm punching someone's throat if I feel in danger In a real life situation

Thanks Shane but what about front kicks, side kicks, spinning side kicks, ax kicks and sweep kicks.
@ORTIZ17113
@ORTIZ17113 5 лет назад
Kb Calib all of these slips technically work with any kind of kick. You just have to be able to read the opponents strikes to then adjust if need be. Realistically a front kick/teep or a side kick in order to work effectively need to reach a certain distance to have maximum effect so if someone aims a sidekick or teep to your body and you move it back about 2 inches making the C-shape then chances are you’re completely out of range for that 1 kick. The problem becomes when the person catches on to your slips and begins to feint their kicks or starts to double up of the kick like how Shane was saying after the roundhouse kick with the momentum carried you can spin into a different strike like a blackfish, spinning elbow, etc. you just have to be ready to intercept another strike if need be after avoiding the 1st one. Hope this helped
@vitorbueno4301
@vitorbueno4301 5 лет назад
Any kick on the body you can use the C-shape lean to evade if you are good at distance and reading. I think stepping back works best for this kicks you said, and you dont lose the opportunity to counter as they are longer than the "normal" kicks. Spinning kicks I like to counter then in the same time they are thrown, like teep in the back (lol). Axe kick and other ones in the head can all be evaded by leaning back (axe is REALLY easy to counter, just spar and you will see It).

What if they are throwing a teep or front kick? With the make-a-C maneuver, you could easily dodge roundhouse kicks and side kicks, but with teeps for example, some people step in and close the distance so they generate more power and it’s harder to defend against. By the time you can react their foot is inches away from your stomach and they haven’t even extended fully.

I think a more squared stance would like to counter. Like the leg grabbing to sweep, or the straight to the head. Technically you can use more than one stance in fights, as each one has their strenghts. So I think the ideal would be getting into the best stance to counter to opponent in time, if you can read him.
