Distended? Soft? Hard? Oomphalitis? Absence of bowel sounds? A mass? A large liver? Anal atresia? What about another intestinal atresia- how would that present? What should a normal umbilical cord look like? How many arteries and veins? What else you shouldn't miss on an exam! How do we evaluate for these, and what do these findings suggest?? In PART 9 of this NCLEX series, we continue our head-to-toe physical exam on babies: watch them all and ace each evaluation!!!
This is part 9 in our basics of neonatology/ NCLEX series

Great information thank you!! How should we bathe babies who still have a cord? My Nicu allows us to do tub baths.

Hello! I always tell families 'sponge' bathe infants where cord hasn't fallen off yet. To make sure it stays dry. Then, after it's off, baby can be submerged into water. I'm sure this is very different in different locations- so that's more of a US experience.

Abdominal distension any definition
@TalaTalksNICU
@TalaTalksNICU 6 месяцев назад
This is a GREAT question. Every baby is so different so really it depends on their baseline- so no real definition! That's one of reasons it's so important to examine our babies and know when something is different. Sorry if not very helpful!

@TalaTalksNICU Thanks. What I understood is that we should know what is normal. Anything different, we have to evaluate.
