This just recently happened to me, but it was a voluntary separation. I was at my job 31 years and had a stellar reputation. After listening to your wonderful videos, I had the courage to seek different employment. When they asked me why I would leave my job after 31 years, I briefly told them what happened - in a very positive way. I took your advice and genuinely told them that I could bring my seasoned skills to them and be a great asset. I ended up landing the job. Thank you for ALL of your tips in all of your videos. I hadn’t interviewed in over 30 years. I nailed the first and second interviews. They told me so. I don’t think I could have done this without you! Thank you!

I was only laid off once, back in 2008. While searching for a new job I also used the time to study and take some IT certification exams. By the time I was hired, I passed five IT exams earning three certifications. These certs helped me get my next job and set me on a successful path.

Hey Don, I got laid off two weeks ago and will be interviewing this week. I was thinking what you were saying and after this video I know my strategy if the question comes up. Thanks for your help on this! -Dave

But the topic of compensation will most likely be asked, and if you, as Don says, "taper it down", there's a potential problem. If the new company's HR contacted the old company's HR to confirm your information (it can and does happen) and it turns out your info is different, you are now either incompetent or a liar, neither of which bodes well for you as a candidate.

Thank you. My case is that I resigned my last role as the environment was extremely toxic, and I though I was going to get 2 positions I was being interviewed for (unfortunately...). Your videos have lot of wisdom and common sense that very often we overlook. I am attacking South Florida FP&A market and have faith that I will be on my feet soon. Again, thank you very much for your words. Best, Jaime

I was laid off my informed he wasnt going to give me a bad review. I applied to a few other companies and they contacted him and he did the opposite. He gave me a bad review. What do I do now?

My contract ended abruptly (a year early) because the staffing firm violated their contract with the client by violating the non-compete clause. In fact, all workers under that staffing firm were let go.

unfortunately you need to separate the topics "laid off" OR "fired". the 2 have different perceptions

So I made it to the last round of interview (it was a ~5 months process with various technical rounds) and during that interview the managers asked me about when I could start and how much time I need to give my current employer. That's when I brought up about how I got terminated from my current position (I got terminated without a fault + severance, while I was still in the interview process). I explained about the accident negligence during my previous employment and the rare circumstance that led to it, as well, I explained what I learned from my mistake. However, next day they got back to me telling me they chose not to move forward with me because of "skill gap". The funny thing is in the past few months they were praising my skills and how they thought I was a good cultural fit.

What if the company is doing stellar (because in the right industry, right political connections), they are employing, the industry is great and there is no economic crises? What if the company is just periodically staging reorganisation, and getting rid of people who are not humble enough, who don't do enough unpaid (!!) overtime etc? That is my experience. First they didn't want to raise my salary (i had a junior salary for a senior position), then they laid me off (with some financial benefits). The thing is, i am a highly skilled professional but unemployed now, so the question comes up in the interviews. Everyone in my country knows this company because they have a progressive image, It is less well known that this company treats their people badly and tries to exploit them. So most people either leave or are laid of. So what is a wise thing to say? I said my workplace was cancelled (fact). But anyone knows that a big company can/will keep someone if they want. What would be a convincing explanation?
@DonGeorgevich
@DonGeorgevich 5 лет назад
congratulate them on their progress
@avgonyma1

@@DonGeorgevich what I meant is: my ex company is doing well, so I can't justify being laid off (in fact, I signed an agreement with benefits) as a result of crisis etc. They are in fact treating their employees badly. These either leave or "are left" . I "was left" because I didn't move yet, but I was unsatisfied. How to justify leaving the company in this case? I said they cancelled my position (even that is weird, in a company that does well), so even they were in a weird position and offered me some benefits as a result. Which I accepted. Is that ok? What there a better explanation? Thanks!

They might lay off only you because you are the weakest member of a team and they don't need you. That doesn't mean you have poor performance as long as you were delivery the level of service they hired you for. The same could have to the strongest member of the team if they are paying too much. Lay offs are done strictly for profit reasons, there is no failure on your part. It doesn't even have to be a massive lay off. They may even want to change service and go in another direction and they don't need your service any longer. They are your customer and can do what they want.
