How to Explore ANYWHERE In Tasmania (Off-Track) 

Something a bit different here folks, this is for the growing number of you who want to know what app I use ect. So I figured I’d give you good lesson on the lot. Back to the normal videos soon, I’ve got some crackers in the works.

Im so glad that 30 years ago we took our kids through the Ballroom Forest, to Dove lake and down the chain below the Cradle. Nothing will convince me that building a viewing station will replace that.

Tasmania is a special place .This kind of mapping could save lives .Cruise ships are bringing in cash .The parks should make sure the money is used to better the people of tasmania .Environmental biology studies are pushing to make money .Seeking those in business that wish to produce better buy back outcomes .You have so much to offer tasmania .We all do .we just have to work together .So much pressure is on parks staff .Watched a young lady working for parks trying to stop bird smuggling .Put you hand up and let us all work together .We have something great in this state .Vote out the bad eggs .Remember how our parks started .

Great guide Rob. The difference nowdays with google earth and such is so much easier than the good old 1:25000 topo map checks. When i walked and paddled the west more regularly there were no phones and just physical maps. We are so spoilt nowdays, imagine the days before maps at all. The early explorers are still my heroes.

Hey Rob, great info thanks- you should also print out the section of map and laminate it with a cheap Kmart laminator. Gaia GPS app and website is great for creating printable areas I overlay the UTM grid on the printed version which is easy to do in Gaia, and I have my Garmin Inreach which can give me UTM coordinates for the current location. This acts as a backup GPS system in case my phone is damaged Then I also carry a compass of course so the printed map can be used in conjunction with that

This is great thanks Rob 👍 I didn’t know you could search the type of vegetation on List Maps. Will definitely start to try and broaden my horizons with looking for trails outside of National Parks where I can.

Thanks for the list of tools and the explanation. The SW of Tassie is fantastic and your tools make exploring safer and they open Tas for people who have put it in the too hard basket. ListMap is not to be underestimated. I use this all the time. Do not discount the old maps either. There are features shown on those maps that are simply not included on the new ones. It’s also worth noting, Tasmania is deadly if you go off track. It should not be done lightly.

thanks Rob , really interesting. Ive noticed that many topo maps are very inaccurate at times and you really need a satellite overlay to see some of the gully areas that a normal topo wont show. Ive had that a few times in the bush off track and it stops you in your tracks when you come across a 4 meter deep and very wide gully that on the topo looks like an easy sloping depression. Gaia GPS is the best Ive used so far

Loved the way you told the truth about exploitation. This is one of the reasons you can't fly drones. The people viewing the footage will revolt when they see it being clear felled. Keep up the good work mate. National parks staff really do think they are the owners. not the custodians.

Thanks Rob. I have been using the Avanza app also and appreciated your education. It was would be nice to see a full review of this app as I find the map selection in the ‘shop’ a bit clunky’. The government website was new to me and the vegetation maps most useful. I would like to offer my thoughts on the NP but will do so when time allows along side the appropriate video. Great advice Rob, especially researching vegetation types at home. It can save alot of pain. How do you keep up battery supply for mobile phones to continuously create a track? Being old school, I use map and compass and a GPS with 1 set of AA batteries for a 2 week off track walk. Marking waypoints on GPS every hour records my progress, route and position verification.

Gee thanks Rob, things have advanced a lot and i think time for a bit more bush bashing. I used to like being dropped off on the SW coast somewhere and spend a couple of weeks making my way solo back to civilization. Most of the time i was actually lost, did have an old Garmin and photocopy's of topographic maps but still hard to work out where you actually were. I agree that in Tassie and the rest of Australia just don't go to popular areas, the best stuff is under the radar and no one to tell you off or say what you can or can not do. I only hope not to many people follow this course but as most are sheep they have no idea another world exists. Any way thanks for your content and great videos. I did take a small HD cams once but i was so busy surviving i hardly used it.

G'day Rob, we love your work mate & the magnificent way that you promote your home state. We have wanted to travel & explore Tassie for some time now, mainly due to your simply stunning & informative videos plus I visited Tassie back in 1978 while serving in the Navy. Unfortunately we have decided to scrub/delete Tassie from our travel plans, due to the large number of well & not so well known YT channels promoting Tassie in a not very welcoming way, so sadly we are going to give the state a miss. Anyway we can still see heaps just watching your great content mate.

Top job bro I get asked this a lot and I don’t use any tech,don’t trust it , batteries go flat. Paper maps ,compass that’s me .there already flat pack away in minimal space and it’s what I’m used too.but I study the grey scale contours on Tas maps and plot my points on those maps accordingly,experience and many years of doing this helps too .hav a good weekend bro talk soon 🤟

Hello Rob, I have been watching many of your videos and I find them to be very inspirational. I am sorry to hear that you have run into so much government regulation in regards to your fantastic film making. I believe that some regulation of tourists coming to Tasmania is possibly needed but I don't believe that applying this same level of regulation to its own citizens is in order. Your videos showing the beauty of Tasmania truly make me want to come there. Please keep up the good work, Paul

Awesome video. I use OnX here in the States for my adventures, usually out there for 60-100 days a year here in N. Idaho. One problem I have with OnX is the satellite images don't update with changes such as forest fires, logging, etc as often as needed. Some areas still show images that are 5 plus years old. Do you run into this problem in Tasmania? Our Forest Service is constantly changing access to our land, gating roads, digging roads up, not maintaining trails, etc so things get tough when we cannot get there in a practical fashion and increase hiker density to the fringe land.

Hey, any chance there is a map like this for Vic? I live in a van and would love to find new areas to camp out. Great info for Tassie, even though I don't think I'll ever come down until they loosen up the restrictions you are fighting to remove
