The Skyline Drive is essentially a northern stretch of the Blue Ridge Parkway (469 miles of Appalachia, America's LONGEST park, that stretches between Great Smoky Mountains NP and Shenandoah NP. In fact, Skyline drive preceded Shenandoah National Park: in 1935 Congress designated the area a National Park BUT required the state of Virginia to purchase or procure the land (mostly privately owned) for donation to the federal government.
