Nice tutorial video. Can this device be used to extend a WiFi network to a separate building that's on a different electrical system? The buildings are approximately 300feet away.
@mydoodads
@mydoodads 6 лет назад
Hi Tech, In theory, I think the answer is yes. I have this vague recollection of people complaining about other people being able to intercept data travelling over Powerline outside of a home. This was fixed by adding encryption on both the adapter and the extender. Also, if I remember correctly a Scottish power company ran a trial scheme running data over their power cables. However, the trial was abandoned because the data could be heard traveling through the cables. While Im no expert on electricity I am also wondering if the electrical technology between the two buildings and the road would stop the PowerLine signal from reaching its destination. An alternative option to Powerline might be a Wireless Mesh network but it will be more expensive. If you do try using Powerline technology to link the two buildings could you please let us know how you got on. Its a really interesting problem.

Hi! Great video! Thanks for so detailed review! Just wanted to ask please if it is possible to connect these adapters to the splitter of electricity, so they will not occupy the plug? And if it is possible to connect 2 kits from one router, I mean that I will connect just one (the smaller adapter) to the router and will place the two others at different places at home. Will it work? Thanks!!!
@mydoodads
@mydoodads 3 года назад
I think that using a splitter will cause issues with your Powerline network. So a better option for you might be to get a kit that has passthrough built in. Perhaps something like the TL-WPA8630p kit? As to your other query. It is possible to connect multiple adapters to your electric mains. These articles might help to give you some additional information. - www.tp-link.com/uk/support/faq/434/ - www.tp-link.com/uk/support/faq/406/

Hi Mydoodads, thanks for the comprehensive setup tutorial. Could you please tell me what the purpose of having the UTP connected permanently to the router is (apposed to just repeating the wifi signal)? I'm thinking specifically in my case I have and ADSL router supplying the internet which feeds a Tomato/Shibby packet shaping router to which people connect via wifi. The wifi and LAN connections are served entirely different IP ranges and for security and routing they need to connect to the wifi. In the method you've shown, having the extender connected via UTP, would that mean people are being served the LAN or the Wifi IP? Many thanks.
@mydoodads
@mydoodads 5 лет назад
Hi JustifyJustin The process shown in the video, disables DHCP on the TP-Link PowerLine extender so that users receive an IP address from the routers DHCP. A network cable (UTP) is permanently connected to the router so that anyone connecting to the PowerLine Extenders wireless access point or its network ports, will not only be able to access the internet, but also access the LAN created by the router. Because of the way a WiFi repeater works, it will typically cut the speeds of a wireless network in half. This is because a WiFi repeater will have to create a backhaul to the wireless access point it is looking to extend. This backhaul is created by dividing half of the repeaters wireless signal, which creates slower data transfer speeds. The nodes in a wireless Mesh network, get around the problems experienced by wireless repeaters by using three wireless signals. Typically, a mesh node uses a 2.4Ghz, and a 5Ghz wireless signal to allow devices to connect wirelessly. Then it uses a second 5Ghz signal to create a backhaul to the Mesh networks primary node. The primary node is the device connected via a network cable to our broadband connection and is providing DHCP to our whole network. On a Powerline extender, as it is using the mains cables in a house to transfer data. The buildings electrical system is acting a the backhaul. This means that we get faster data transfer speeds than if we were to use a WiFi repeater. Hope this helps to answer your query.

@mydoodads 4 года назад
Hi Adam, good question and one I don't think anyone has asked this before. I usually start by testing which channels are the most used in my area. Then set both the router and tp link adapters to one of the primary channels that is being least used. For example 1, 6 or 11 Then after the initial setup, I will spend a couple of days monitoring and testing the connections. Adjusting devices if I think I need to. Hope that answers you question.

@mydoodads
@mydoodads 5 лет назад
Yes, you can use a second wireless access point with any PowerLine extender that only has Network ports. However, the instructions would be a little different, as most of the configuration would be done on your second wireless access point. If I were in your situation. I probably would configure my second wireless access point to bridge mode and just replicate the SSID and password to my main wireless access point. Hope that helps

I have changed my router. I used to use the extender demonstrated here successfully in my garage with my old router. I can't recall exactly how I set the extender up originally but don't think it was as complex as in your video. Do I have to go through this whole process again because I have changed router? Before changing my router and speaking to my broadband provider on the phone, they suggested that just pressing the pair button on the adapter and extender unit should get me signal in my garage following a channel tweak on the old router to try and improve signal throughout the house. After pressing WPS on the router and eventually getting devices to work within the house, I pressed the pair button on the adapter, went to the garage and pressed pair on the extender and there was no signal. They then suggested changing to a spare router I had (a new unused one they had sent). I am tempted to revert to the old router as I don't think it has improved things signal wise and was not the cause of the problem. If I do so, will the extender pick up from where it left off if I just change back to the old channel on my original router? Incidentally I have noticed that the LED light on the extender is never solid but blinks quickly all the time (it may have been doing originally I'm not sure). I know this is very convoluted but would appreciate any advice. Thanks.
@mydoodads
@mydoodads 5 лет назад
Hi Charles Thats a lot of question. First I need to mention that, WPS is not secure. So on my network, all device that offer WPS as a feature have had WPS disabled. While this potentially can add complexity when configuring devices, from a security point of view, disabling WPS gives me some additional piece of mind. Also, by not using WPS I am forcing myself to understand better how the components of my home network actually interconnect and work together. As I ignore WPS as a method for setting up devices, the advice I'll offer here may be of limited use to you. This is because Im presuming that WPS is only offering a simplified method for issuing passwords, and is not auto configuring your PowerLine Adapter to your routers SSID. SSID is the broadcast name that your wireless router uses. If I were in your situation the way I would have connected your TP-Link PowerLine WiFi extender to your new wireless router. Is to change the SSID and password on your new router so that it matches the SSID and password you were using on your old router. Not only will this mean that you don't have to reconfigure the TP Link PowerLine adapter, you won't have to visit each wireless device in your home network and reset the SSID and password. As you mention in your query, it might be a good idea to reconnect your old router. See if your PowerLine extenders still works with the old router. Then, if they do. Reconnect the new router, and match the SSID and password to that of your old router. There should be no need to re-pair your Adapter and Extender. However, if you do rather than having both the Extender and the adapter so far way from each other. Try placing both devices in close proximity to each other. If possible like in my video. Now press the pair button and establish a connection between the PowerLine Extender and the adapter. Once you have a connection between the Extender and the Adapter, return the extender to the garage and see if you can re-establish a link. Remember, do not plug in either the PowerLine adapter or extender into an extension brick. If I remember correctly, by pressing the Pair button you are not factory resetting the PowerLine extender or adapter so it should retain its previous wireless settings. The indicator lights on the front of the Extender for the power light and the PowerLine connection lights should both be solid, while the WiFi light will be flashing. Hope this helps.

@@mydoodads Thanks very much for your really helpful advice and time. I picked up on your point re the adapter location which had always been plugged into an extension brick. I plugged it into a wall socket, pressed the pair button, went to the garage, pressed the pair button on the extender not expecting any change, fired up the MacBook Air and the WiFi symbol on the Mac Book Air lit up straight away. I have internet now in there so that's great. It is confusing though as it it gives the name of the old router not the new one which is still operational (???). The new one isn't even listed as a Network to join on the MacBook when I am in the garage. Anyway I'm not bothered as long as I have reliable signal! Thanks again.

Video mentions upfront that Powerline communication does not work but doesn't cover what to do when it doesn't: how to use the system to rebroadcast wi-fi. Good video for standard setup though.

Hi, great tutorial! However, this morning I tried to set our new one up, had the WiFi working, but could not gain access into its system to change name and link it with router ...I spent from 9.15am to 11.45am on phone with tp-link help line to sort it, no matter what the adviser suggested it did not work! ...more than frustrated I've returned it with negative comment! ...followed your video too, and would work either, any comments welcome ...Regards Norm's

Just questions how far distance from the router can plunging the adapter ???

As the adapter needs to be plugged into the router via a network cable. The router can be as far away from the adapter as the length of your network cable.

The number of additional Powerline extenders that you can connect to the same network will depend on the model of extender you use www.tp-link.com/uk/support/faq/434/ You can then connect existing power line adapters using the network pair button - www.tp-link.com/uk/support/faq/319/ Hope this helps to answer your query.

Yes your PowerLine adapters will need to be on the same power circuit. According to TP-Link - www.tp-link.com/uk/support/faq/406/ Q3.5: Can Powerline adapters work if they are separated by different electric circuits? A: No. If they can pair in the same room, but the powerline LED turns off when you move one powerline device to another area, this usually means they are plugged into separate electrical circuits, preventing them from communicating. Please try different locations.
