How to extract a broken headphone plug from the jack

Headphone plugs occasionally break into pieces and the tip of the plug can remain lodged in the headphone jack.
How can you remove it? No one makes pliers small enough to reach all the way down in there to fish it out!
There is a trick: you have to attach it to a thin stick and pull it out without the glue you used to attach it touching the inner walls of the headphone jack.
Watch as I do just that, without damaging the jack in any way.

Thanks for posting this, although it didn't work, your drawings helped me realise that in my smartphone only the tip was stuck and this is why most recommended methods didn't work for me. Thanks for great drawings! 👍🙂

i just had to use the super glue technique and use a small flat circular object that can attach to the end of the jack and it took around 4 tries before it finally came out. Honesly sucks cause my jack is just got super glue all over now :/

It worked on my mac book pro retina. Apple support just gave me as a "solution" to find a damaged motherboard to get a replacement of the entire jack. You saved my life (aka my laptop). Thanks man!

Great ! This saved my MacBook audio ! One additional advice : carefully choose the right ball-pen inner tube. The good one will likely go deeper into the plug and properly wrap the broken part. I had to spoil 3 ball-pens in order to find the good one. Also, as said in the tuto, wait for the glue to dry. It is worth 10' of patience !

I wish they would make these videos so that I wouldn't have to listen to talking .. My headphones broke off into my phone but it's not just the tip it's the whole thing.. So basically I can't hear anything from my phone

Well, if your entire jack snapped off due to some traumatic impact then it could be bent ...that's a bigger problem! If its bent then you will have much more friction to overcome. Super glue (or cyanoacrylate) will stick to metal great. The plastic inserts, not so much. But if you can grab the central contact pin at all (however much of it remains in the dismembered jack tip) then you should still be able to make this trick work. Good luck!

what if I can't grab the central contact pin? is there anyway i can still get it out??

One trick if you don't want to listen to the talking is to mute it. If you have a lodged headphone jack in your soundcard that normally automatically solves that problem.

I came up with another way, that may be easier. No Q-tip needed, you still need the glue though. 1. You'll need a 1/8"x1/4" rivet. They look like tiny fencing foils, and the 1/4" part is the length of the "handle". 2. Take the "handle" off, and grind down the pointy end of the long piece so it is flat. The handle part acts like a collar so you don't get glue on the sides of the hole. 3. Put a bit of glue on the long piece, on the end that you flattened. Stick it into the collar so that it makes contact with the stuck plug. From here, wait till the glue hardens and with luck the plug will come right out!

What I did was I got a screw driver, or anything pointy and strong. Dont know exactly what it was. Put it it side and pushed. One bit popped out snd was left with a bit still in there. Because it had a bit still in there, I got small plyers and tried to get hold of it. After 3 or 4 pulls it came out. Hope that helps anyone who cant do in with glue.

I have 2 segments of the headphones in and I didn't know the paper clip thing so it's gonna be even harder because there's glue touching the port so I may be screwd

Aw that stinks! If the glue doesn't interfere with the little contact points you'll be okay, otherwise you'll have to investigate what things dissolve super glue. Good luck!

Oh no my headphone tip has the little metal rod in the centre but i can’t pull it out as no tweezers can fit around the edge to grab a hold as the plug-in hole for the phone is too small. I can’t stick anything in as it’s not hollow and no pen cartridge or cotton bud/qtip can get a grip on it as it’s pretty jammed in there. Any advice my man?
@mewoosh
@mewoosh 6 лет назад
HarryM2000 putting superglue on a paperclip could still work as it will bind to the tip of the connector. Make sure you don’t get glue on anything other than the plug though! The hollow q-tip sleeve should help keep your paper clip straight as well

Buy a "BIC Pen". It is the exact correct size. They cost nothing and usually come with a few in a package. I tried everything, pens, screwdrivers, straws, none worked. I bought a "Big Pen" and it is 100% the right size and it worked right away.

Yep, I see no reason it wouldn’t. The specific design of the jack will differ somewhat (Apple vs. the world) but this method should work the same way.

How do you opens ipad air1
@mewoosh
@mewoosh 4 года назад
Those are horrible things to service! I tried to open a Gen 2 iPad and that involved heating up the glue and prying it up and off the frame to expose the interior. Also the touchscreen is separate from the LCD screen. The LCD is incredibly fragile and if you break that your repair costs will double! I wouldn't recommend you try that on your own device for the first time. Better to pay someone local to do it for you.

If the jack itself is damaged it can be replaced but that's a matter of removing an internal component. I've done that on an iPhone 6 once. The parts can be bought from China for cheap from Amazon/eBay if you're willing to wait a couple weeks for delivery.
